Nothing wrong in ‘ghar wapsi’ , Muslims and Christians Ancestors were Hindus

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad today waded into the controversy relating to religious conversions, saying there is nothing wrong in its ‘ghar wapsi’ programme and called for a law to check “forced” conversions.

The VHP said Parliament should pass a law on forced religious conversions and maintained that while conversions
were wrong, there is nothing wrong in ‘ghar wapsi’ or reconversion back to Hinduism.

Terror attack planned for Pakistan Day foiled: Police

Police Sunday said they have foiled a terrorist attack that aimed to the strike the Pakistan Day parade on March 23, media reports said.

Police sources said that two suspected terrorists were arrested during recent raids and confessed to planning an attack, Dawn News reported.

They said the men were arrested from Ghouri Town here in connection with the attack on the Qasar-e-Sakina Imambargah which occurred on February 19.

Sources said the arrested men confessed to planning an attack during their interrogation. A large cache of weapons was also seized from their possession.

107 applicants for 43 coal mines for allocation to PSUs

The Coal Ministry on Sunday received 107 applications from state-run undertakings like NTPC, SAIL and the Damodar Valley Corp for allocation of 43 coal blocks whose earlier allotments were cancelled by the apex court.

“(A total of) 107 applications were received for 43 coal blocks for allocation to government entities,” Coal Secretary Anil Swarup said in a tweet.

The Palma II mine in Chhattisgarh got nine applications, the highest for a single block.

Suspended Trinamool MLA threatens defamation suit

Suspended Trinamool Congress legislator Swapan Kanti Ghosh on Sunday threatened to file a defamation suit against party secretary general Partha Chatterjee who announced his suspension for anti-party activities.

A legislator from Suri in Birbhum district, Ghosh was suspended on February 25 after he staged a demonstration at the assembly premises alleging that the Trinamool-run Suri municipality siphoned off Rs.10.36 crore meant for central schemes including a drinking water project.

Hindu Jagran Manch complains of Conversion through Allurement

Activists of the Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), a right wing organisation, today created ruckus at a Christian prayer service at Kasba Jobat village in the Jobat region near here, alleging that people were being converted by allurement, police said.

After being informed, the police sprung into action and brought the situation under control after talking to both
the groups, Jobat Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Anand Singh Vaskala said.

The incident occurred when one Nobel Emmanuel was holding a prayer service at his farm house.

Modi seeks ideas for PMO mobile app

Urging young engineers to help move India to the status of an innovation hub, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he will invite ideas from the public for developing a mobile application for the Prime Minister’s Office towards making it mobile-friendly.

“The faster you all make mobile apps, the faster you will capture the market. We need a revolution in mobile governance. We will launch a competition through mygov.In to seek ideas for a PMO mobile app,” he said at an event here to mark 25 years of the IT industry body Nasscom.

Odisha to get more funds in Finance Commission: Pradhan

Refuting allegations that Odisha would lose revenue following the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission, union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Sunday that it would get about Rs.8,000 crore more funds per annum compared to the 13th commission allocations.

Though the share of Odisha in tax devolution has decreased, the quantum of fund allocation has been increased and the state would receive more funds, Pradhan said.

After a gap of over ten years, seasoned cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya seems set to make a comeback as full-time president of the Indian cricket board (BCCI) uncontested, being the sole nominee for the top post which will be formally filled at the board’s AGM here on Monday.

The former International Cricket Council (ICC) president, whose previous tenure as full-time Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief ended in 2004, emerged as a consensus candidate of the two rival factions — as the deadline for filing nomination ended on Sunday afternoon.

Railways can contribute 2 percent to GDP: Suresh Prabhu

The railways can contribute up to two percent to the gross domestic product (GDP), Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Sunday adding that he has asked the railway board to identify key issues and focus areas towards this end.

Speaking at an event here organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Prabhu, who presented the railway budget for 2015-16 on Thursday, said public sector banks and the ministry will work together on expanding the rail network.

The ministry is also expected to sign agreements with financial institutions to fund project and issue tax free bonds soon.

Pakistan captain Misbah praises pacers for win

A relieved Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq credited his pacers for their 20-run victory over Zimbabwe in a World Cup Pool B ncounter at the Gabba here Sunday. With this win, the 1992 edition champions registered their first win in the tournament.

Peaceful JK polls due to Election Commission and Army: BJP

Refusing to be drawn into the row over J-K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s remarks crediting people across the border and separatists for the peaceful polls in the state, BJP today said the exercise had been successful due to the efforts of the Election Commission and Indian Army and of those who believe in the Indian Constitution.

‘No decision yet on special status to Andhra’

The NDA central government has not yet taken a decision on granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh and the issue was under consideration, said union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

Naidu faced a volley of questions at a news conference here Sunday, a day after Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a partner in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, voiced disappointment over the union budget for 2015-16.

The budget tabled in parliament Saturday made no mention of special status.

Faridabad to have tallest flagpole in the world soon

The tallest flagpole in the world, 240 ft in height, will soon be hoisted in Faridabad with the national flag.
This flagpole would be 240 ft in height which is the tallest not only in India but also in world, Faridabad MLA Vipul Goel said.
The flagpole will be installed in town park in the heart of the city. The event on March 3 will also be recorded in the Limca book of world records, Goel said.

Supreme Court: Rapist can be awarded lesser punishment for special reasons

The Supreme Court has said that a rape convict can be awarded lesser punishment if courts find “adequate and special” reasons for doing so.
Though a bench of justices M Y Eqbal and Pinaki Chandra Ghose upheld the conviction of Madhya Pradesh resident Ravindra in a 20-year-old rape case, it allowed him to walk free after imposing a jail term already undergone by him.
Referring to a case law, the court considered as “adequate and special” reasons the fact that the trial was protracted and both convict and the victim have married separately.

Miscreants rob five passengers of Howrah-bound train

Five passengers were today robbed of their cash, mobile phone and other belongings on board the Howrah-bound Geetanjali express at Tatanagar railway station here, Government Railway Police (GRP) said.
The GRP said that five of them were found unconscious and were taken to S E Railway hospital where doctors referred them to M G M Hospital.
Four passengers were released after first-aid but one is still admitted in the hospital, they said.

Security forces arrest 16 militants, linkmen in Assam

In two separate operations, security forces on Sunday arrested 16 militants and linkmen of various banned outfits from Assam.

In the first incident, the forces arrested 14 militants and linkmen of the Rabha National Liberation Front from the Goalpara district. As per reports, the militants are suspected to be involved in the planting of a bomb on a railway track in the district on earlier this week.

The second incident was a joint operation by the army and the state police arrest two National Democratic Front of Bodoland- Songbijit (NDFB-S) militants from the Kokrajhar district.

A new study has revealed that calorie counting and weight-stigma prevent teens from eating healthy food.

Researchers observed whether or not photographs of vegetables on a school lunch tray had an impact on the amount of vegetables eaten. They found that placing photos of carrots and green beans did increase the amounts of vegetables eaten during lunch, but it still was not at levels consistent with government-recommended dietary guidelines.

16 fresh swine flu cases in Bengal

As many as 16 fresh cases of swine flu were detected in West Bengal in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of positive cases to 131, an official said Sunday. There were no fresh deaths.

The toll due to swine flu in Bengal rose to eight Saturday with the death of a two and-a-half-year-old at a city hospital.

“No deaths were reported since Saturday evening. 16 fresh cases have been detected. The total number of cases has reached 131,” said Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Malay Kumar De.

Jaishankar in Bhutan on SAARC yatra

Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar met the Bhutanese leadership, including King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, on Sunday on the first stop of his SAARC yatra here as both sides discussed bilateral ties as well as connectivity projects of a sub-regional grouping.

Jaishankar also met Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and the officiating foreign secretary of Bhutan during the talks.

Earlier, Jaishankar was received at the airport by Indian envoy Gautam Bambawle and Bhutanese officials.

IS killer Emwazi linked to 2005 London bombing plot

Mohammed Emwazi, the masked Islamic State (IS) killer who has appeared in several execution videos, was part of a terrorist cell that was behind the failed bomb attack in London on July 21, 2005, according to media reports.

One member of the terrorist network was in touch with Hussein Osman, who was later jailed for life for placing an explosive at London’s Shepherd’s Bush underground train station, the Observer reported.

Welcoming the budget announcement of Rs.14,000 crore investment in the road sector, completing 100,000 km of roads and sanctioning construction of another 100,000 km, a leading tyre manufacturer also called for correction of the duty structure for the industry.

In a statement issued here, Raghupati Singhania, chairman and managing director, JK Tyre and Industries Ltd said an outlay of Rs.14,000 crore in road sector and completing one lakh km of roads currently under construction and sanctioning another one lakh Kms will help boost the demand in tyre sector.

Militancy has damaged Kashmir: Pakistani daily

Asking India and Pakistan to revisit the fundamentals of their Kashmir policies, a Pakistani newspaper said Sunday that militancy had caused huge damage to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Dawn said in an editorial that Pakistan had to recognise that its core policy – right to self-determination for Kashmiris – had been distorted for too long and in too many ways.

This happened because of the “armed jihad that was unleashed in the region with – no matter what the officially stated position is – the active collaboration and sponsorship of the Pakistani state.
