Businessman dies after falling down from hotel window

A 35-year-old man died on the spot after falling down from the third floor of a hotel in Hayathnagar police limits.

The deceased, Ch Srinivas, a native of Warangal, came to the city along with a few friends on Saturday in connection with his fertilizers business. He checked-in in Room No 316 of RFC Tara Hotel in Hayathnagar. However, he accidentally fell down from his room’s window on Saturday night and died instantaneously. Police suspect that he was in inebriated condition. Further investigations are on. (INN)

Man found murdered in Shamshabad

A 22-year-old man was found murdered in the limits of RGI Airport police on Sunday.

According to police, they found the body of Govardhan Reddy near his chicken shop-cum-residence at Railway Kaman in Shamshabad locality on Sunday morning. He has been murdered by some unidentified persons by throwing a boulder on his head. Police have registered a case of murder under Section 302 and began investigations, according to Inspector T Sudhakar. (INN)

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will visit Mumbai on Monday.

Dattatreyya visits GOC blast victims

Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreyya on Sunday visited the victims who were injured in explosion at Gulf Oil Corporation (formerly IDL industries) on February 23.

Dattatreyya visited the injured persons at Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills and enquired about their health condition. He assured that the government would extend all required help to the victims. He also directed the officials to take steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.

No option other than talks with Pakistan: Mufti on Kashmir

Asserting that there is no option other than talks with Pakistan over Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had deputed Foreign Secretary to begin talks with neighbouring country.

“No such assurance… There is no question of assurance. He (Prime Minister) told me when he met me that I deputed my Foreign Secretary to go there and talk. It was his first response,” Mufti told reporters when asked whether Prime Minister Modi has given him assurance on commencement of dialogue with Pakistan.

Pakistan to hold talks with India on all issues: Sartaj Aziz

Pakistan will hold dialogue with India on all issues including the longstanding Kashmir dispute, National Security Adviser Sartaj Aziz said on Sunday ahead of the Foreign Secretary-level talks next week.

Talking to Radio Pakistan in Lahore, Aziz said that India cancelled Foreign Secretary level talks last year and now it took initiative to restore these talks.

Underlining the importance of talks, Aziz said that dialogue between the two countries will help reduce tension on the Line of Control.

Rain, strong winds bring down temperature in Delhi

Delhi and parts of the National Capital region (NCR) were on Sunday hit by rain and strong winds since morning, bringing down temperatures.

Overcast conditions persisted throughout the day and was accompanied with strong winds and light rainfall in several parts of the city, prompting people to venture out of their homes to enjoy the weather.

The city received 17.2 mm of rain during the day, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 19 degrees Celsius, eight notches below normal, and minimum was 15.2 degrees Celsius, three above normal.

Woman drugged, gang-raped by five youth in UP

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly drugged and gang-raped here by five youths, including son of a Sub-inspector, police said on Sunday.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim, she had gone to a nearby gift centre yesterday where she was offered a sedative-laden cold drink by the shop’s owner.

The five accused, including the owner and officials’s son, gang-raped the girl in the area, SSI of Kotwali Police Station, Promod Kumar said.

When she gained consciousness, they threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone, he said.

Sushma Swaraj to travel to Lanka this week

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will arrive here on Friday to set the stage for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka, the first bilateral visit to the country by an Indian premier in over 25 years.

During her two-day stay, Swaraj will call on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and hold talks with Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, the Sunday Times reported.

She is also expected to call on President Maithripala Sirisena during the trip, seen as a precursor to the visit by Modi on March 13.

BJP president Amit Shah to visit Coimbatore on March 5

BJP president Amit Shah will pay a one-day visit to the city on March 5 to take stock of the political situation in Tamil Nadu during which he will have discussions with top party leaders.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday disagreed with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu`s view that Union Budget 2015-16 failed to fulfill the promises made to the state at the time of its bifurcation.

“I think we should see by combining both the 14th Finance Commission report and the Budget. If we see it collectively then Andhra Pradesh has got a lot of money and that is the assessment of the central government and the union finance Minister is also telling the same,” Naidu said at a media briefing here.

Resident doctors defer strike after negotiations with government

Following assurances from the health secretary to improve security conditions for resident doctors in government hospitals, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) on Sunday decided to postpone its indefinite strike for a fortnight.

“We have decided to postpone our indefinite strike till March 15. We have been assured of proper security conditions by next week. We will go on a strike from March 16 if our demands are not met,” said Balwinder Singh, president of FORDA.

FORDA is an association of 25 Delhi-based government hospitals.

South Korea’s Yang wins Thailand women’s golf tournament

South Korea’s Amy Yang won the Honda Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Thailand golf tournament by three strokes here on Sunday.

Yang struck a three-under 69 in the final round of the $1.5 million tournament at the Siam Country Club. She collected 15-under 273 as total. She held off World No.3 Stacy Lewis from the United States, who was leading after each of the previous three rounds, reports Xinhua.

Lewis tied for second place with Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Yani and South Korean Lee Mi-Rim. They fell short by three strokes.

Free laptops for Kerala girls admitted in professional colleges

A total of 1,500 girl students in Kerala from poor families or with small land holdings who are admitted in professional colleges will be given a laptop for free, state Finance Minister K.M. Mani said on Sunday.

In a press statement here, Mani said this was part of the first phase of a state government programme, the announcement of which was made in the 2014-15 budget.

The programme would be implemented this fiscal itself, he said.

Bangladesh to seek FBI’s help in Avijit Roy murder probe

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali Sunday said it has decided to take help of the US’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the probe into writer-blogger Avijit Roy’s murder following Washington’s offer.

The minister conveyed the decision to a group of Dhaka-based diplomats including those of the US, while briefing them on the ongoing political situation Sunday, bdnews24.com reported.

Ali said the government had decided to “positively respond” to the US offer to engage the FBI in unearthing the motive and real culprits behind the murder.

Ranji: Tamil Nadu set up title clash against Karnataka

Tamil Nadu entered the final of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament getting the better of Maharshtra via a first innings lead in the semifinals at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu piled on a gigantic score of 549 in the first innings. Last year’s runners-up Maharashtra were bowled out for 454 in their reply, conceding a 95-run lead. The first innings lead propelled Tamil Nadu to their 12th Ranji final where they will be facing Karnataka in Mumbai from March 8.
