Newborn dies; FIR against doctors, 2 others

A newborn died at a nursing home in English Bazar town of Malda district just three days after delivery with the family members alleging negligence on part of the hospital authorities, police said today.

A senior police officer said the baby girl died three days’ after delivery.

The baby’s father, Manoj Mitra, has filed an FIR at English Bazar police station against doctor Z Haque who attended to the patient, besides an unnamed RMO and nurse Seema Devi, the police officer said.

The baby was born on February 24.

INO will cause major environmental damages in Theni: Patkar

Noted social activist Medha Patkar today joined hands with MDMK leader Vaiko to oppose the proposed neutrino observatory project in Theni district, claiming that it would cause large-scale environmental damages.

“Nature will suffer major damages if India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is set up. Radiation from it will affect people in the area. The central government does not seem to care about the people’s livelihood. The INO project will not benefit India either,” Patkar said.

Kejriwal inaugurates 50-MGD water treatment plant in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has inaugurated a 50-million gallon water treatment plant in the Dwarka Sector 16 area of the national capital.

“The water treatment plant will help as its capacity is 50 MGD. We will try that Haryana gives more water, we will talk to them. This is also a big achievement,” said West Delhi MP, Pravesh Verma.

“In Delhi around 50 percent people get drinking water from tanks. If there is no line then how will they get water?” he added.

Novel blood test detects intensity of peanut allergy

Researchers have developed a new blood test that could predict the intensity of a patient’s allergic reaction to peanut consumption.

Based on initial results, the researchers noted that the new test is many times more sensitive than current procedures.

“A patient who has a serious allergy and gets exposed to an allergen protein will form antibodies in their body that should stay there for a while,” said James Rusling, professor at the University of Connecticut in the US.

2 minor girls reported missing from Faridabad

Two teenage girls have gone missing from Faridabad in the past week, police said today.

According to a complaint filed by her father, a resident of Surya Vihar here, the girl left home on February 26 and has not returned since then. The family has searched for her every where but did not find any trace of her.

The complaint under section 365 of the IPC was registered at Sarai Khwaja police station and “we are trying to trace the girl at the earliest,” said investigating officer Deshraj.

Mumbai mastermind Lakhvi ‘comfortably’ hosting guests, watching TV inside jail cell

A report has said that Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, the prime suspect and alleged mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, is leading a “comfortable life” inside Adiala Jail.

According to the Dawn, Lakvi can receive any number of guests at any time of the day, seven days a week, a jail official said. He also watches television, uses a mobile phone and has access to the internet.

The report said that none of his visitors have to identify themselves to the jail authorities.

Rape attempt made on minor in Faridabad

A man allegedly attempted to rape a 10-year-old girl here when she was alone at her house, police said today.

According to a complaint filed at police station Kotwali Faridabad, the incident occured yesterday when the victim was alone in her house in NIT-Sector 1 after her parents left for work, investigating officer Rajkumari said.

The accused, Vinod, came to the house to meet his sister who is staying as a tenant there. The girl informed him that his sister had left for work and then she went to inside to drink water, police said.

US moving to deport Bosnians tied to war crimes: Report

The United States is moving to deport at least 150 Bosnians suspected of taking part in war crimes and ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the New York Times reported.

The report said US immigration officials had identified about 300 immigrants believed to have concealed their involvement in wartime atrocities, but the number could eventually top 600.

The accused immigrants include a soccer coach in Virginia, a metal worker in Ohio and four hotel casino workers in Las Vegas, the Times said yesterday.

Family of four electrocuted in Maharashtra’s Nanded district

A family of four has died of an electric shock in a slum of Maharashtra’s Nanded district.

The family, which was sleeping on an iron bed, was electrocuted when current mixed with rain water circulated in the entire house.

The houses in this area do not have electricity meters installed due to which most houses have made makeshift arrangements for ensuring a connection to their houses.

Aggression positively correlated to muscle development in boys

Boys who show aggressive tendencies develop greater physical strength as teenagers than boys who are not aggressive, says a study.

There are a couple of possible mechanisms that could explain the findings.

For example, it is possible that muscular strength and anti-social traits are both mediated by changing hormone levels from childhood through adolescence.

Or it could be that aggressive boys engage in activities that facilitate greater development of strength.

Pope denounces ‘intolerable brutality’ in Iraq, Syria

Pope Francis today denounced the “intolerable brutality” being inflicted on Christians and other minorities in Iraq and Syria by Islamic State group militants.

“Unfortunately the tragic news just keeps coming from Iraq and Syria,” the pontiff said after his weekly prayer in St Peter’s Square.

“We want to assure all those who find themselves in these situations that we have not forgotten them,” he said. “Rather we are with them and we are praying intently for the rapid end of the intolerable brutality of which they are victims.”

Hazare’s association with parties has shattered his activist

Union Minister General (Retd.) V K Singh has criticised social activist Anna Hazare for sharing dais with Congress leader Raj Babbar and AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal during his protest against the land bill at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Sensex surges 185 points; capital goods stocks rally

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets, the 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex), on Monday surged 185.54 points or 0.63 percent in the early session ahead as capital goods stocks surged.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading 51.35 points or 0.58 percent up at 8,953.20 points.

The Sensex of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 29,533.42 points, was trading at 29,547.04 points (at 9.22 a.m.) in the early session, up 185.54 points or 0.63 percent from the previous day’s close at 29,361.50 points.

AAP rejects Home Ministry’s shortlist for Chief Secretary

Hardening its position, the AAP government on Sunday rejected Union Home Ministry’s panel of three senior IAS officials to pick one of them as the next Chief Secretary, asking the Centre to respect its choice of R S Negi for the the top post and cooperate with it to fulfil people’s aspirations.

In a letter to the Home Ministry, the Delhi government said the Centre should not impose any officer on it and that there would be nothing wrong in appointing Negi, a 1984-batch officer, to the top bureaucratic post.

Unhappy over her proposed engagement, woman commits suicide

Unhappy over her scheduled engagement with a man she did not wish to marry, a 25-year-old woman committed suicide at her friend’s home in west Delhi, police said today.

The woman, Ritu Rawat, hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her friend’s rented accommodation in Sector-16 of Dwarka here.

She left behind a suicide note addressed to her mother in which she has blamed no one for her extreme step.

Ritu worked at a call centre in Gurgaon and he shared a rented flat with a female colleague in the same apartments complex as her male friend.

Yadav, Bhushan pitch for ‘new blood’ in AAP political affairs committee

A strong pitch to reconstitute the party’s political affairs committee (PAC) bringing in “new blood” and more “transparency” was made by senior APP leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav when a three-member panel met the two to defuse the simmering crisis in the party.

Bhushan is also said to have raised the issues of regular holding of National Executive, National Council and PAC meets, and objected to “importing” of candidates from other parties to contest on party tickets.

Govt cuts spending on education, health of children: CRY

The Union Budget for 2015-16 has cut spending on child education, development, health and protection as compared to last year, child rights organisation CRY has said.

Criticising the Union Budget for 2015-16, NGO Child Rights and You (CRY) has said “in absolute terms” child budget has decreased from Rs 81,075.26 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 57,918.51 crore in 2015-16.

It has said as a proportion of the total expenditure of the government, the child budget has seen a “sharp decline” from 4.52 per cent in 2014-15 to 3.26 per cent in 2015-16.

TDP failed to get funds from Centre: YSRCP

Stating that the TDP government in Andhra Pradesh has failed to get funds from the Centre as part of the Budget, YSR Congress today alleged that there was a “conspiracy” to water down Polavaram project in the state.

“Being a coalition partner, N Chandrababu Naidu has not convened any meeting with his party members to set the agenda for the priorities of the state. Instead it seems that he is hand-in-glove in watering down the Polavaram Irrigation project by promoting Pattiseema project,” YSR Congress spokesperson Ambati Rambabu said.

Consensus needed for Posco project: Pradhan

Noting that lack of cohesion among stake holders delayed the proposed mega steel plant by Posco in Odisha, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today said a consensus was needed for implementation of the country’s largest FDI project.

“Everyone wants Posco. Odisha government wants it as also some people in the society. However, some people opposed it and triggered confusion by giving it a different colour and the country’s largest FDI is yet to materialise so far,” Pradhan said.

Siddaramaiah slams Union budget as “anti-poor”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday slammed the Union Budget as “anti-poor” and “disappointing”, saying the Finance Minister had only tried to build castles in the air to win people’s appreciation.

He also said that signs of recovery in the economy were not because of the Modi Government’s initiatives but due to the plummeting crude oil prices in the international market and the improvements were seen in the last year of the UPA rule itself as acknowledged by the Economic Survey report.

Moscow denounces ‘abominable’ Charlie Hebdo cartoon

The head of the Russian parliament’s foreign affairs committee Alexei Pushkov has denounced a cartoon published in the latest issue of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo on the truce in Ukraine as “abominable”.

The drawing, entitled ‘Ceasefire: boredom sets in in Donetsk’, depicts the inhabitants of separatist-controlled eastern Ukraine standing amid ruins and rubble wondering, ‘How about we do something with some cartoonists?’

“It is an abomination, not freedom of expression,” Pushkov, who is known for his controversial statements, wrote on his Twitter account.

Guiliana Rancic’s son speaks in three languages

‘Fashion Police’ co-host Guiliana Rancic’s toddler Duke is learning to speak in Italian and Spanish besides English.

Guiliana’s husband and Duke’s father Bill Rancic said the two-and-a half-year-old kid can count up to 10 in Spanish, reported People magazine.

“He can count to 10 in Spanish, which is pretty awesome. And Giuliana’s teaching him Italian. It’s great! He’s a sponge,” Bill said.
