Search warrant against Khaleda Zia’s office

A Bangladesh court has issued a search warrant against former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s Dhaka office after reports that she could be hiding fugitives and explosives there, media reported on Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate S.M. Masud Zaman issued the warrant on Sunday, bdnews 24 reported.

Police have asked for the warrant in the explosive case filed against the bombing over a procession outside Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan’s office on February 16 which killed at least 11 people.

The issuance of the warrant was kept under wraps.

Aurangabad MNS chief sacked for involvement in polluting river

MNS chief Raj Thackeray has expelled the party’s Aurangabad unit chief following reports of his alleged involvement in the dumping of poisonous industrial waste into a river there.

“I recently heard about poisonous substance being released into a river in Aurangabad and the worst part was that the city unit chief of MNS, Sumit Khambekar, was involved in the incident…,” according to a statement issued by Thackeray yesterday.

“…How could somebody indulge in such an inhuman and horrific act. This amounts to playing with the lives of people and cannot be tolerated,” he said.

Foodgrain prices trade steady in market
Prices of gram dal, wheat and sooji decreased while those of moong dal increased in the wholesale foodgrains market here today.

Gram dal and wheat fell by Rs 100 per quintal each to Rs 4,800 and Rs 2,700 from its previous rate of Rs 4,900 and Rs 2,800, respectively.

Likewise, Sooji (90 kg) declined by Rs 50 to Rs 2,950 from Rs 3,000.

In contrast, moong dal rose by Rs 100 per quintal to Rs 9,900 from its previous rate of Rs 9,800.

Eight bookies arrested in AP

Eight bookies were arrested from a house near Kalaniketan showroom here in connection with a betting racket, police said on Monday.

On a tip off, district police raided the house yesterday and arrested Narayansetti Venkata Kiran, Manikyam Suribabu, Pasumarti Koti Babu, Pasumarti Jyothi Babu, Nandigam Srinivasa Patnaik, Tamma RamamMurty, Tankala Venkata Ramana, and Satyavarapu Lava Kumar, who were watching a cricket match and were betting on the game.

Police also recovered Rs 49,880 in cash along with a television from the house.

Newly married couple end life
(Siasat News): A newly married couple at Sonia Gandhi Nagar in Kushaiguda hanged themselves to death. The duo got married just three months back who hailed from Nalgonda.

They are identified as Srinivas and Monica who were said to be under heavy financial crunch that led them to commit suicide. Kushaiguda police has registered a case and the dead bodies are shifted to Gandhi Hospital.

‘Less painful’ treatment for enlarged prostates

Men with enlarged prostates can avail of a new, “less painful” treatment, research led by an Indian-origin physician has found.

The researchers treated men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate is enlarged but not cancerous.

The new interventional radiology treatment known as prostate artery embolisation (PAE) improved patient symptoms, regardless of the size of BPH,, researchers found in a retrospective study.

Two women survive molestation attempt; jump from running auto

Two young women jumped from a speeding autorickshaw when the driver allegedly tried to molest them en route Bhiwandi here, police said on Monday.

The incident took place around 9 PM last night when the two Sarika Patil (22) and Pratiksha Puarnik (17) were returning from a ABVP function and boarded an auto from Malhar Talkies for Bhiwandi to go to their relative’s house, they said.

As soon as they reached the Cadbury junction here, the driver tried to molest the girls and sped towards a different direction.

Two children killed in Afghan blast

Two children were killed and three civilians injured on Monday after a bomb blast in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.

“An improvised explosive device (IED) was planted near a bridge in Jalalabad city’s Farm-e-Hadda area,” a police officer told Xinhua. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Heavy snowfall in Kashmir

The Kashmir Valley witnessed heavy snowfall on Monday, disrupting surface and air traffic and the Met office has forecast more rain and snowfall till Tuesday.

“Due to the Western Disturbances active over Jammu and Kashmir, weather conditions will remain the same. There will be more snowfall till Tuesday,” Met office director Sonam Lotus told IANS here.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed for all sorts of vehicular traffic because of heavy snowfall in Banihal sector and landslides in Ramban sector, an official said.

Black money: Holders will have a last chance to disclose assets

Indians holding black money abroad will be given a last chance to disclose their overseas bank accounts or wealth to the government and avoid a jail term.

Revealing this, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha on Sunday said the failure to unveil assets abroad will invite a rigorous jail term of up to seven years, while concealment of income and tax evasion would result in 10-year imprisonment.

These provisions will be part of a Bill that the government plans to bring in the current session of Parliament to check the black money menace.

Opposition condemns Sayeed’s separatist statement

Leaders of opposition parties on Monday condemned the controversial statements made by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed regarding the elections in the state.
Sayeed had earlier stoked a controversy by stating that the Hurriyat, Pakistan and militants had allowed a conducive atmosphere for the recently held assembly polls in the state.

Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal claimed that Sayeed did not ‘deserve’ to be the chief minister for making such comments.

Perfectly spherical chicken egg sold for £480

A perfectly spherical chicken egg in the UK has fetched an “unbelievable” 480 pounds in an internet auction.

Kim Broughton found one of her hens – now renamed Ping Pong – had laid the round egg in her garden in Latchingdon, Essex, on February 17.

She decided to auction the egg in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust after a friend’s son died from the disease.

Broughton said she imagined the buyer was interested in preserving, rather than eating, the unusual egg.

BJP leader Vijay Sonkar Shastri on Sunday condemned the vandalisation of another Hindu temple in Washington and added that such incidents there were a cause for worry.

Watchman murdered, body dumped in drain

A 45-year-old company watchman was bludgeoned to death allegedly by a villager, who then set the victim afire and dumped him in a drain in Vasai here, police said today.

API Sunil Soste of Valiv Police Station said accused Pradeep Senapati beat watchman Srikrishna Dwivedi to death over a long-pending dispute and then poured kerosene on his body and set him ablaze yesterday.

Controversial meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi has been granted bail by a Delhi court in black money case filed by the Income Tax (I-T) department.

The I-T department had prepared a detailed report on the tax evasions of Qureshi, who is known to have had strong connections with at least two former directors of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) AP Singh and Ranjit Sinha. While Singh had to step down from the post of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Sinha was removed as the CBI director’s post.

Islamic State group jihadists today freed 19 of the 220 Assyrian Christians they took hostage in Syria last week, after a ransom was paid for their release, activists said. “Nineteen Assyrian hostages arrived on Sunday at the Church of Our Lady in Hasakeh after they were released by IS,” said Osama Edward, the director of the Assyrian Network for Human Rights. “They arrived on two buses from Shaddadeh,” the IS stronghold in the northeastern province of Hasakeh where they had been detained.

Fire at gas pipeline in Telangana

A fire broke out today in a natural gas pipeline that ferries gas from Reliance Industries’ eastern offshore KG-D6 field in Telangana.No loss of life or injury has been reported.

The fire was notice early this morning in a section of the pipeline near Zaheerabad in remote Telangana due to gas leak in the Main Line Valve, RGTIL, the company that operates the pipeline, said.

Moin Qureshi granted bail in tax evasion case

A court here granted bail to businessman Moin Ahmed Qureshi on Monday in a case filed by the income tax department for allegedly not disclosing his income of about Rs.20 crore and dodging tax.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Devendra Kumar Sharma granted bail to Qureshi, a meat exporter, and his employee Aditya Sharma. The court asked them to furnish a personal bond of Rs.50,000 each and a surety of like amount.

They appeared before the court after summons were issued against them on January 30. The court ordered them to appear before it on March 2.
