Controversy apart, a ‘truly representative’ Government assumes office in J-K

Soon after being sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed courted a controversy by thanking the separatists, militants and even Pakistan for the support that the state received during the assembly elections.

The controversy drowned the fact that after many years the state has a truly representative government, with Jammu region having a real say in the affairs of the state.

Looking forward to working with Telangana PCC chief: Renuka Chowdhury

Congress leader Renuka Chaudhary on Monday said that she looks forward to working with newly appointed Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Uttam Kumar Reddy.

“We are happy to have Uttam Reddy as our new PCC chief. We look forward to working with him,” said Chaudhary.

The Congress party had earlier in the day appointed five new PCC chiefs and one regional Congress Committee President.

Apart from Uttam Reddy from Telangana, the other new PCC chiefs are: Ashok Chavan in Maharashtra, Ghulam Ahmed Mir in Jammu and Kashmir Bharatsinh Solanki in Gujarat and Ajay Maken in Delhi.

The human retina is built backwards, with the neurons in front of the photoreceptors rather than behind them, a new study has confirmed.

From a practical standpoint, the wiring of the human eye – a product of our evolutionary baggage – does not make a lot of sense.

In vertebrates, photoreceptors are located behind the neurons in the back of the eye – resulting in light scattering by the nervous fibres and blurring of our vision.

Recently, researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have confirmed the biological purpose for this seemingly counterintuitive setup.

‘BJP govt in MP failed to curb violence against minority’

Congress today accused the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh of failing to curb violence against the minority community and announced to hold sit-in tomorrow in the city over the issue.

Coordinator of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee minority cell Mohammad Saleem and its spokesman SM Saud Hasan told reporters said that at least 945 communal riots have taken place between 2005 and 2013 after the BJP came to power in Madhya Pradesh.

Woman dies of swine flu in Tamil Nadu

A 39-year-old woman died of swine flu at government hospital here, hospital sources said Monday.

The woman, a resident of Saravanampatti in the city, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the last few days due to fever and throat pain, they said.

As the fever continued, she was shifted to the Government Hospital yesterday morning, where she tested positive for H1N1 virus.

She succumbed to the virus last night, the sources said.

Ali Zafar names newly-born daughter Alyza

Pakistani actor Ali Zafar has revealed he has named his seven-day-old daughter Alyza.

The 34-year-old ‘Kill Dil’ star and wife Ayesha Fazli welcomed Alyza, their second child, on February 23.

The couple has an elder son Azaan, who is four-year-old.

The moniker has been decided by Azaan.

“4 yr old Azaan named her Alyza,” Zafar tweeted.

Rains sweep large parts of India, fresh snowfall in J&K

Land and air traffic was badly affected in Jammu and Kashmir as snowfall and rainfall continued for the second day, Monday.

The Kashmir valley and the hilly regions of the state witnessed fresh snowfall today. Srinagar received 2-3 inches of snow overnight.

In Jammu region, overnight rains paralysed normal life even as the Met Dept has predicted similar conditions for the next 24 hours in the state.

The arterial Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed due to heavy snowfall and landslides.

‘Media making mountain of a molehill’: Mufti Sayeed

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Monday lambasted the media for the ongoing controversy surrounding his remark crediting Pakistan for peaceful elections in the state and said that he stands by his comment.

“The media did not talk about all the positive things I said but instead made a mountain of a molehill out of my statement. I also talked about the kind of democratic rights and freedom that Jammu and Kashmir has within the Constitution of India,” said Sayeed.

Espionage case: ‘We haven’t questioned any CEOs yet, says Bassi

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Monday said they are looking for some absconding people in the espionage case and added that no CEO has been questioned so far.

“We have received information about involvement of some other people from the arrested ones. Some of them are absconding and we are looking for them. Some have been summoned for questioning but we haven’t questioned any CEOs yet,” said Bassi.

“Mr Rajbeer Singh from GMR Energy has been called in for interrogation,” he added.

Scientists have for the first time found that an abnormal protein whose accumulation in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease starts building up inside neurons of people as young as 20.

It has long been known that amyloid accumulates and forms clumps of plaque outside neurons in ageing adults and in Alzheimer’s but this is the first time amyloid accumulation has been shown in such young human brains, researchers said.

167 terrorists held in two months in Assam: Governor

14-year-old girl dies in shooting over Facebook argument

A 14-year-old Alabama girl was killed after two men fired into a group of girls who decided to settle down the brawl in the park, in the state capital Birmingham, over an argument they had on Facebook.

News reports stated the girls planned to videotape their fight and post the recording online, but after the fight began, two teenage males arrived and started shooting at them, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The shots killed 14-year-old Kierra’onna Rice and wounded two others.
