Saudi Arabia blames ‘technical failure’ for Yemen jet crash

Saudi Arabia today blamed a “technical fault” for forcing two of its pilots in an F-15 to eject over waters south of Yemen during a mission amid a bombing campaign targeting Shiite rebels in the country.

The official Saudi Press Agency reported that the pilots were in “good health” after ejecting Thursday. It said the US offered aid to rescue the airmen.

A US Defense Department official told The Associated Press that an American helicopter flew Thursday from neighbouring Djibouti to the Gulf of Aden and rescued the airmen.

The Germanwings co-pilot who crashed his Airbus in the French Alps, killing all 150 aboard, told his ex-girlfriend that “one day everyone will know my name”, according to a media report.

In an interview, the 26-year-old flight attendant known as Maria W told German newspaper Bild that when she heard about the crash she recalled Andreas Lubitz telling her last year: “One day I’m going to do something that will change the whole system, and everyone will know my name and remember.”

China, Kazakhstan strike deals worth 23.6 billion dollars

China has expanded its economic partnership with Kazakhstan by signing 33 deals worth 23.6 billion dollars, covering distinct areas ranging from hydropower to steel.

The agreements were reached after Kazakhstan Prime Minister Karim Masimov paid a visit to China and held a meeting with Chinese premier Li Keqiang on Friday.

Besides hydropower and steel, some of the others areas covered by the deals include oil refining and cars.

“The inking of the deals show the success of bilateral cooperation, and proves that the two countries’ economies are complementary,” said LiKeqiang.

Coach of Aravalli Express derails; no casualty

An air-conditioned coach of Aravalli Express running between Bandra and Jaipur on Saturday derailed near the Sabarmati railway station here, officials said.

However, there was no casualty or injury to any passenger, they said. The incident occurred around 6.30 AM.

Woman dies days after sterilisation surgery in UP

A 32-year-old woman, who had undergone a surgery at a sterilisation camp earlier this week, died on Saturday at a private hospital here, triggering protest by her family members, district officials said.

Sunita Yadav had undergone surgery at a sterilisation camp on March 24 and was later admitted to community health centre here as complications arose, they added.

Last night, as her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the private hospital of Dr Sushil Gupta, who had conducted the operation in the camp, where she died today morning, officials said.

Saudi Arabia evacuates diplomats from Aden

Saudi navy forces have evacuated dozens of Saudi and foreign diplomats from Yemen’s main southern city Aden, a media report said on Saturday.

They reached Saudi Arabia after being evacuated in two Saudi naval vessels, Xinhua reported citing Al Arabiya News.

The evacuation came after a coalition of 10 countries led by Saudi Arabia started air raids against Houthi targets in Yemen.

On Friday, the Saudi-led Arab forces carried out a third day of airstrikes which were repelled by intensified anti-aircraft gunfire by the Shia Houthi group that controls Yemen’s capital Sanaa.

A woman in Colorado accused of stabbing a pregnant woman and removing her seven-month-old foetus has been charged with eight counts of felony and faces potentially more than 100 years in prison.

A former nursing aide in Colorado who allegedly attacked a young pregnant woman and removed her foetus, killing it in the process and leaving the mother severely injured, was charged with attempted murder and seven other felonies.

According to police, on March 18, former nursing aide Dynel Lane, 34, lured Michelle Wilkins, 26, into her home in Longmont.

Roads closures on Sunday for Singapore ex-PM’s funeral

Several roads in Singapore will remain closed on Sunday to facilitate the funeral of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who died at the age of 91 on Monday.

Lee, the founder of modern Singapore, died after a long battle with pneumonia.

The funeral procession will start at 12.30 p.m. It will leave Parliament House for the University Cultural Centre (UCC) located at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where the funeral service will take place, The Straits Times reported.

Germanwings crash: Lufthansa offers financial assistance to families

Lufthansa, the parent company of Germanwings, said it is offering financial assistance of 50,000 euros ($54,400) to the relatives of the victims aboard flight 4U9525 that crashed on Tuesday en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.

The Germanwings Airbus A320 jet crashed in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the French Alps, killing all 150 people – 144 passengers and six crew members – on board.

The relatives of each victim would get up to 50,000 euros for “immediate help”, a Lufthansa spokesman told Xinhua on Saturday.

MRI may one day replace biopsy: Study

A new imaging technique that shows the difference between normal and cancerous cells may one day make biopsies a thing of the past.

Developed by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University in the US, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, so far tested only in test tube-grown cells and mice was described in a report published in the online journal Nature Communications.

While imaging tests like mammograms or CT scans are used to detect tumours, figuring out whether a growth is or is not cancer usually requires a biopsy to study cells directly.

Former US cop indicted for assaulting Indian Sureshbhai Patel

A US police officer, accused of using excessive force against a 57-year-old Indian leaving him partially paralysed, has been indicted on federal civil rights violation charges that carries imprisonment up to 10 years.

“A federal grand jury indicted Eric Parker, the police officer who threw Sureshbhai Patel to the ground resulting in him getting partially paralyzed, for deprivation of rights under color of law,” said Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta and US Attorney in the Northern District of Alabama Joyce Vance in a two-page indictment.
