Pakistani smuggler shot dead; heroin worth Rs 120 crore seized

A Pakistani smuggler, carrying 24 kg heroin, was shot dead on Saturday by the BSF near Indo-Pak border village of Ajnala in Amritsar.

The Pakistani intruder was repeatedly challenged by the BSF troops and asked to surrender when he was entering the Indian territory at Border Out Post at Majhmian, BSF DIG RPS Jaswal said. He ignored the warnings and kept marching towards Indian territory and also fired gun shots on the BSF party, following which the BSF aggressively retaliated, Jaswal said, adding, the intruder was shot dead during cross firing.

HR manager on an MNC driving his Skoda Octavia car recklessly loaded with liquor, girls and loud music, mowed down a 36-year-old woman software engineer and seriously injured her husband in Gachibowli on Thursday night.

The victim have identified as Soni Ramchandani, engineer with Infosys, travelling with her husband Harish and four-year-old son Moksha.

The victims are rushed to the nearby Hospital where the Infosys engineer succumbed to her injuries in the wee hours of Friday. The husband is battling for life while the child escaped with minor injuries.

The Congress Party on Saturday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a unit which was only hungry for power and driven by arrogance and dictatorial tendencies.

“This was a party which came out of some principals but became a party only hungry for power and all the benefits of power. The entire perception of AAP is completely away from reality,” said Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit.

“I have known Arvind ji for a while and I know what drives him. These people are only driven by lust for power, arrogance and dictatorial tendencies,” he added.

Gold jumps on good seasonal support; silver extends losses

Gold staged a modest rebound after a brief overnight slide on the bullion market on Saturday following renewed offtake by jewellery stockists and retailers amidst seasonal demand.

In contrast, silver slumped further due to sustained speculative unwinding as well as sluggish industrial buying.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) rose by Rs 45 to finish at Rs 26,565 per 10 grams from Friday’s closing level of Rs 26,520.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also edged higher by a similar margin to settle at Rs 26,715 per 10 grams as against Rs 26,670 previously.

Airtel, RCom gain capability for 4G service across country

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications (RCom) have gained capability to provide 4G services across the country as they bagged requisite spectrum in the concluded spectrum auction.

RIL’s telecom arm Reliance Jio already has pan-India 4G spectrum.

“RCom becomes India’s first and only operator with nationwide footprint of contiguous 800/850 MHz spectrum. RCom operations now future-proofed across all circles for most advanced LTE technology at most optimal cost,” the company said in a statement.

ISRO bags Gandhi peace prize

The Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO) has won the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2014.

The Gandhi Peace Prize was instituted by the Government of India in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

This annual award is given to individuals and institutions for their contributions towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.

Attack on HOD: 23 students suspended by principal

Principal, Arts College in Satavahavana University on Saturday suspended 23 students, pursuing MA (English) here on Friday on the charge of attacking Head of the English Department.

The students were charged with attacking Head of the English Department Dr P V Laxmi Prasad for giving fewer marks in internal examinations. Principal also allegedly the students have destroyed the furniture in HOD office. They also burnt the answer sheets which were there in his office.

Merger of Janata Parivar on right track, says Nitish

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said that the merger of the Janata Parivar would take very soon, adding that Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav would hold talks with JD (S) national president H.D. Deve Gowda and INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala in this regard.

“I met Mulayam Singh Yadav ji on 26th night. On 27th, Lalu ji, Sharad ji and I sat with Mulayam Singh ji and had elaborate discussions. A merger is on the way,” Kumar said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said there was no “cloud of uncertainty” over merger of old Janata Parivar splinter groups and that it was on track.

“The merger vehicle of Janata Parivar is on track and the vehicle is on the run,” Kumar told reporters after a conclave on skill development here.

“I think the merger will not take much time,” he said.

“The date of the next meeting on merger will be decided soon in which everything will become clear,” Kumar said.

Micropacemaker to treat foetus with heart block

In a first, researchers have designed a fully implantable micropacemaker for use in a foetus with complete heart block.

Reported in the journal Heart Rhythm, the micropacemaker has been designated a Humanitarian Use Device by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The team of researchers from the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and the University of Southern California (USC) has already done pre-clinical testing and optimization and they anticipate the first human use of the device in the near future, the study noted.

New lobster-like predator found at 500 mn-year-old site

What do butterflies, spiders and lobsters have in common? They are all surviving relatives of a newly-identified prehistoric species called Yawunik kootenayi.

An international team of palaeontologists recently found fossil remains of Yawunik at the Marble Canyon site in British Columbia’s Kootenay National Park.

Researchers said Yawunik was a marine creature with two pairs of eyes and prominent grasping appendages that lived as much as 508 million years ago – more than 250 million years before the first dinosaur.

Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi sacked

Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi was sacked on Saturday, the authorities said.

President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday directed that “Aziz Qureshi shall cease to hold the office of the governor of Mizoram and appointed Keshari Nath Tripathi, governor of West Bengal, to discharge the functions of the governor of Mizoram”, an official statement said.

Mizoram Governor Aziz Qureshi, who has had a running feud with the Centre and even approached the Supreme Court against attempts to ease him out, was sacked today.

A brief statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said that “Qureshi shall cease to hold the office of the Governor of Mizoram.”

Governor of West Bengal Keshari Nath Tripathi has been asked to discharge the functions of the Mizoram Governor, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements are made, it said.

After outrage, Goa government tones down its dress code diktat

Goa’s Art and Culture department has withdrawn its circular on dress code in office and allowed semi-formal and smart casuals for its staff in a fresh direction.

The department earlier had banned sleeveless tops and jeans in office evoking strong reaction from Opposition Congress party. “All the employees are now hereby informed that they shall wear semi formal or formal dress or smart casuals at official functions of this department as well as in the office to maintain proper decorum in office,” reads the order issued by Director Prasad Lolienkar on Friday.
