Jet Airways Dubai-Mumbai flight suffers bird-hit

A Jet Airways Dubai-Mumbai flight suffered a bird-hit shortly before landing at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here on Tuesday evening, but there was no damage to the plane nor any casualty, an official said.

The captain of flight 9W 541 reported the incident while landing, following which a thorough inspection of the aircraft was carried out.

There were 110 passengers in the flight, the official from the airline said.

Mamata questions Rajnath’s Bengal tour, BJP hits back

Wondering whether Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to West Bengal, including to enclaves on the India-Bangladesh border, was “political” or “official”, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday slammed the Centre for not holding any “prior discussion” with the state government on the tour.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), heading the government at the Centre, dismissed her charges and accused Banerjee of politicising a matter concerning national security.

HUDA officials booked for ex-colleague’s suicide

Two employees of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) were booked on Tuesday on charges of abetting the suicide of a former colleague, police said.

Sub-Divisional Officer Hari Singh Jhakar and clerk Ramesh Saini were booked for the extreme step taken by former HUDA revenue official, 35-year-old Kamaldeep.

Kamaldeep, from Sonipat district in Haryana, joined HUDA in July 2012 on a contract basis.

His father Mahender Singh alleged that his son killed himself because of “mental torture” by the accused officers.

RIL wins two oil blocks in Myanmar

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd on Tuesday said it has been awarded two offshore blocks for exploration of oil and gas in Myanmar.

Myanmar had invited bids from international companies for discovery of oil and gas, in response to which it had received bids from 36 multinational companies.

“Reliance Industries Ltd and Myanmar Oil & Gas Enterprise (MOGE), an enterprise of the Government of Myanmar, have signed production-sharing contracts for two offshore blocks (M17 and M18),” the company said in a statement.

Swine flu claims 20 more lives, toll rises to 2,064

Swine flu claimed the lives of 20 more persons as the death toll in the country rose to 2,064 while the number of persons affected by the H1N1 virus breached the 34,000-mark.

Data collated by Union Health Ministry till yesterday said that 2,064 persons have perished due to the disease while the number of affected persons across various states was 34,068.

Delhi government to increase buses

The Delhi government on Tuesday said it would increase the number of buses in the capital under its route revival plan.

“We want to make public transport strong in Delhi for which there is a need to increase the number of buses in the city. With a view to ferry the crowd properly, we will increase the number of buses in Delhi,” Transport Minister Gopal Rai said at a press conference.

In this connection, a meeting of transport department officials and legislators of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party was held on Monday, he said.

Rajnath visit row: BJP says Mamata ‘politicizing issues related to national security’

Hitting back at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for raising questions over Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Cooch Behar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the former of trying to politicize the issues related to national security.

“On March 25, Home Minister’s office had communicated to the West Bengal Governor, Chief Minister’s office and other departments about Home Minister’s visit to West Bengal…I am surprised that she continues to politicize something which is related to national security,” BJP general secretary Siddharth Nath Singh told ANI.

Kolkata Metro to increase services on weekends

The Metro Railway, Kolkata has decided to increase services on Saturdays and Sundays by plying 34 pairs of additional trains from this weekend, it was announced on Tuesday.

A Metro Railway release said 224 trains will ply on Saturdays instead of the present 206 trains and 110 trains on Sundays as against 94 that run now.

Metro commuters will get the benefit of the increased services from the coming Saturday.

A few days after extending financial assistance to a Muslim woman pilot for her advanced training, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao on Tuesday announced help for a tribal girl to fulfil her dream to become a pilot.

the chief minister has sanctioned Rs.28,09,815 to Ajmeera Bobby for commercial pilot’s license training at Dean International Flying School in Florida (US).

The financial assistance includes tuition fee, travel, living and other expenses for the girl hailing from backward Adilabad district.

Telangana proposes garden, museum at Qutub Shahi tombs

The Telangana government has sent a proposal of Rs.85 crore to the central government for restoration works at Qutub Shahi tombs, the final abode of Qutub Shahi rulers at Golconda here.

The state government proposes to develop landscaped gardens, site museum and illumination of the monuments spread over 104 acre royal necropolis.

Principal Secretary, Tourism and Culture, B.P. Acharya, told reporters on Tuesday that the proposal was sent following an announcement made in the union budget for 2015-16.

British universities deny admission to MUSLIM students in warfare courses?

Britain has denied admission to over 700 international students from taking courses in nuclear, biological and chemical warfare subjects amid fears they might use the knowledge to build weapons of mass destruction.

A total of 739 student applications, for a range science and engineering based courses, have been rejected to prevent extremists gaining access to the information and materials they need to develop nuclear and chemical weapons, as reported in the telegraph.

Pakistan exercises with Saudi Arabia; may not join Yemen strikes

Pakistan is holding a joint military drill with Saudi Arabia, but has remained undecided over sending troops to assist Saudi Arabia in the military campaign in Yemen, according to media reports on Monday.

Pakistan Army spokesman Asim Bajwa said that the pre-scheduled joint military exercise “Samsam-5” was being held since March 19 in the Saudi Arabian city of Taif, Xinhua reported. He said that the drill, however, did not involve an operational deployment.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitram Yechury on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court’s notice to senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani and 19 others in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition case, adding that the culprits should be exposed after a proper investigation.

AP Govt, CII & NUS ink MoU

The Government of Andhra Pradesh, National University of Singapore, and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) have inked an MoU in Singapore to work on “Ease of Doing Business in AP.”

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between NUS (acting through the Asian Competitiveness Institute at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy), AP and CII is for cooperation in relation to “Masterplan on Ease of Doing Business in Andhra Pradesh (MEDBAP): Vision 2020” and other related activities.

The duration of the MoU is from April 1st, 2015 to March 31st, 2018.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar today took a dig at Rahul Gandhi over his mysterious “leave”, saying even eclipses can be predicted but not the “appearance” of the Congress Vice President.

“In the prediction of a solar or lunar eclipse, certain calculations are involved. But there can be no calculations to determine as to when Rahul Gandhi will appear. So what can I say,” said Javadekar, Minister for Environment and Forests.

Myth busted! An apple a day may not keep the doctor away, according to a new research which found that daily apple eaters had just as many doctor visits as those who did not regularly eat the fruit.

However, the study also found that daily apple eaters are less likely to use prescription medications.
Researchers compared daily apple eaters (those who consumed at least 1 small apple per day or 149 grams of raw apple) with non-apple eaters.

The authors analysed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2008 and 2009-2010).
