Governor presents silk clothes to Bhadradri Rama

Governor ESL Narsimhan and Vimala Narasimhan today presented silk clothes to Sri Seetharama Swamy at Bhadrachalam temple as part of Sri Rama Navami festival celebrations.

Narsimhan participated in Pattabhishekam program of Lord Sri Rama on the occasion.

Temple priests blessed the Governor and his wife, who also performed special pujas. In the Sri Rama Navami festivities, a large number of devotees participated in the festivities while the temple premises reverberated with Jai Sriram slogans amidst Vedic hymns and chanting of mantras. (NSS)

Suravaram re-elected CPI general secretary

CPI national party today re-elected Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy as its general secretary in the elections held in the national capital.

This is the second time that Suravaram was elected to the top post at national level. Gurudas Das Gupta has been elected as deputy general secretary and Dr K Narayana as secretariat-member of the national party. (NSS)

Javadekar visits Tirumala

Union minister Prakash Javadekar today worshipped Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala and got blessings from temple priests.

The TTD officials offered the Union minister a warm welcome.

Speaking to the media later, Javadekar said there will be no fire accidents in Sheshachalam forests in the district. We have prepared plans to overcome the problem of fire accidents which will not recur, Javadekar stated. India to airlift nationals from Yemen, sending ship

India said on Sunday that it would airlift its nationals from unrest-hit Yemen and is also sending a large ship to the Yemeni capital as Saudi Arabia-led Arab coalition warplanes continued airstrikes against the Shia Houthi rebels for the fourth consecutive day.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted: “Today we got permission to fly from Sanaa for three hours a day. We will use this slot for evacuating our citizens every day. In addition, we are sending a ship with a capacity of 1,500 passengers.”

Government will try to ban cow slaughter: Rajnath

The central government will try to build consensus on banning cow slaughter, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said here on Sunday.

Cow slaughter has always been against the principles of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and that was why the BJP-led government will try to discuss the issue with all parties concerned, Rajnath Singh said during an event organised by the Shwetambar Jain Samaj.

Giving the example of Madhya Pradesh, he said Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had banned cow slaughter in the state a long time back.

Failure in passing land bill will be harmful for farmers: Venkaiah Naidu

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said that failure in passing the land bill would be harmful for the farmers of the country and the government was trying to take regional parties into confidence on the controversial bill.

The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015, with nine amendments, was passed in Lok Sabha.

Govt will airlift the indian citizens from Yemen: Sushma Swaraj

Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday that Govt was preparing to airlift stuck citizens from war-torn Yemen despite the bombing of the country’s main international airport.

Some 4,100 Indians are currently in Yemen, including 3,100 in Sanaa, 500 in Aden and the rest around the country, the minister said.

According to sources air evacuations would take place from Yemen, which has been dove into chaos by a Huthi Shiite rebellion that has triggered Saudi-backed airstrikes on the capital Sanaa.

Cong to launch online, app-based membership drive

In order to strengthen the party base, Congress will launch an online and app-based membership drive in the national capital tomorrow where it suffered severe drubbing in the last two Assembly elections.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh will launch the drive.

Arab leaders agree to form unified force: Sisi

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday said Arab League member states have agreed on the formation of an Arab military force to counter growing security threats.

A high-level committee will be formed to start implementation of the joint Arab force decision, Xinhua cited Sisi as saying.

In his speech on the final day of the two-day Arab League summit held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Sisi added that the heads of the Arab armies will soon meet to discuss the mechanism of the unified force.

Air Canada flight skids off runway, 23 hospitalised

An Air Canada flight from Toronto skidded off the runway as it landed at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Sunday, sending 23 people to hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Flight AC624 “took a very hard landing and skidded off the runway”, Halifax Stanfield International Airport spokesman Peter Spurway said.

“Right now, we have some minor injuries. Nothing that is deemed to be life-threatening,” CBC News reported Spurway as saying.

cameras on patrolling SUVs: No room for the offenders to escape

As a part of the city’s hi-tech supervision system, the Hyderabad police came forward with mounted cameras on patrolling SUVs. The cameras can record crimes and also record police actions which can be used in court as evidence said Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy.

On Saturday, a test run was held, wherein two police vehicles mounted with cameras watched the Sriram Navami processions in the city. The city police will be using cameras that can not only record events occurring in front of the vehicle but also record events in 360 degrees area all around the patrol car.

After Dhoni, Clarke calls for changes in ODI field restrictions

Australian skipper Michael Clarke has said he would like to see five fielders outside the 30-yard circle instead of the current four during “powerplays” to allow bowlers more protection during field restrictions in One-Day International (ODI) cricket.

Currently only four fielders can be placed outside the 30-yard circle during “powerplays” which helps batsmen to score at a brisk pace.

His sentiments are similar to Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who felt that the current ODI rules are loaded heavily in favour of the batsman.

Man in China Gets Six-Year Jail Term for Growing Beard

A court in China’s mainly Muslim Xinjiang region has sentenced a man to six years in prison for “provoking trouble” and growing a beard, a practise discouraged by local authorities, a newspaper reported today.

The court in the desert oasis city of Kashgar sentenced the 38-year-old Uighur to six years, while his wife was given a two-year sentence, according to the China Youth Daily.

The man “had started growing his beard in 2010” while his wife “wore a veil hiding her face and a burqa”, the paper said.

The findings, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, help to describe the conversation that takes place between the brain and brown fat tissue while the latter is generating heat.

Brown fat is considered “good fat” or “healthy fat” because it burns calories to help generate heat for our bodies and expend energy.

Delhi Police forms women’s groups to check eve teasing

In an initiative to boost confidence among women and instill a sense of fear among eve teasers, Delhi Police has launched a campaign in Delhi University where girls, trained in unarmed combat, will patrol crime-prone areas along with policewomen and catch anybody making nuisance.

“The campaign ‘She to Shakti’ was launched at the varsity’s north campus. Girls will be patrolling in groups of 20 each. They have also been given especially designed khaki jackets with ‘Shakti’ written upon it,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Madhur Verma told PTI.

Maneka Gandhi asks home ministry to consider women’s quota in police

The women and child development ministry has requested the home ministry to take up with the various state governments the issue of 33 percent reservation of posts for women in police forces, official sources said on Sunday.

In a letter to Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi was cited to have said: “I request you to take up the issue of 33 percent reservation for women in police forces at your level so that together we can address the problem of violence against women.”

Eleven killed in road mishap in Jhansi

Eleven people died and nine others were injured on Saturday night in a road mishap in Jhansi district in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Sunday.

Police said a number of pilgrims from Bhujaund village in Moth area were going in two tractor trollies to Ratangarh Mata temple in Madhya Pradesh. On the way, some of the pilgrims got down to offer coconuts at another temple opposite the forest department’s office while other pilgrims remained seated in the vehicles, said Madhya Pradesh Police spokesperson Nityanand Rai.
