Coal unions warn of ‘non-cooperation’ drive on CIL divestment

Irked by the government’s 10 per cent stake sale in Coal India Ltd (CIL), trade unions have warned of a ‘non-cooperation drive’ to protest against the disinvestment and other issues.

A decision in this regard would be taken by the central trade unions of coal industry during a meeting expected to be called in a couple of days, a senior union leader said.

“We may launch a non-cooperation drive later to protest against CIL disinvestment,” INTUC-affiliate Indian National Mine Workers’ Federation (INMF) Secretary General S Q Zama told PTI. He, however, did not divulge further details.

23 FDI proposals deferred for possible tax treaty abuse

Getting tough with investment proposals from tax heavens, FIPB has deferred 23 applications in its last three meetings apprehending “treaty abuse”.

According to sources, the Department of Revenue has expressed doubt that a few foreign companies were evading tax by routing their investments through tax heaven countries with whom India has signed Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).

The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), they said, is keen that guidelines should be prepared to deal with such investment proposals.

Govt planning to make bribery in polls a cognisable offence

In its bid to check corruption in the poll process, the NDA government is contemplating to amend the law to make bribery — both cash and kind — during elections a cognisable offence, empowering police to arrest the violators without a warrant and jail up to two years.

The Home Ministry has recently conveyed to the Election Commission that it has initiated the process to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and a note has been sent to law officers to prepare the draft amendment bill.

Centre last word on GM crops; nod for confined field trial

Though Maharashtra government has given ‘no objection certificate’ for field trials of some genetically modified (GM) crops, the Centre will take a final call on whether to allow such crops in the market or not, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said.

Anil Kakodkar, who headed a state-level committee which recommended field trials of GM crops, has also said that clearance has been given for “confined field trials,” and it is the prerogative of the central government to approve or disapprove the use of GM crops, based on trial results.

Re-investigation of 1984 riot cases by SIT likely

A government-appointed committee has recommended constitution of a SIT for re-investigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases.

The committee headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice (retd) G P Mathur has submitted its report to Home Minister Rajnath Singh last week and recommended fresh probe of the anti-Sikh riot cases through a Special Investigation Team, official sources said.

An order to this effect is likely after the February 7 Delhi Assembly polls as the Model Code of Conduct is in place in the national capital now, the sources said.

Makkah Masjid, Shahi Masjid workers deprived of salaries

The government has allocated 1030 Cr for minority welfare but the Minority Welfare Department is reluctant to release even Rs/- 3 lakh to pay the salaries of workers and security guards of historical Makkah Masjid and Shahi Masjid. Even as the January also ended, the Imam, Khateeb, Muezzin, and other workers of Makkah Masjid and Shahi Masjid have not received the salary of December 2014 itself. Similarly the home guards deployed at the historical Makkah Masjid for its security are also deprived of salary of December 2014.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi led a road show with senior party leader Dr. Harsh Vardhan in the Krishna Nagar constituency on Sunday.

Bedi, who is contesting the elections from the Krishna Nagar constituency, has been involved in a pitched battle with her rival, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal ahead of the Delhi polls.

Avalanche warning issued in J-K, Uttarakhand

An avalanche warning in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand was issued on Sunday.

While travellers have been advised about the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, those people living under the line of avalanche in the state were advised to temporarily evacuate their properties.

Reports also warn of avalanche activity in the higher reaches of the hills of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Tehri, Pauri and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand for the next two days.

The state’s high altitude districts were also issued an avalanche warning earlier this month. (ANI)

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is on a three-day visit to China, on Sunday suggested a six-point template for India and China to build their relations upon and to realise the dream of an ‘Asian Century’.

Sushma suggested an ‘action- oriented approach, broad-base bilateral engagement, convergence on common regional and global interests, develop new areas of cooperation, expand strategic communication and fulfill common aspirations’.

New imaging tech increases detection rates of cancers in dense breast tissues

A new study has revealed about a new breast imaging technique that nearly quadruples detection rates of cancers in dense breast tissues.

Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI), pioneered at Mayo Clinic, is a supplemental imaging technology designed to find tumors that would otherwise be obscured by surrounding dense breast tissue on a mammogram. Tumors and dense breast tissue can both appear white on a mammogram, making tumors indistinguishable from background tissue in women with dense breasts.

EC issues show cause notice to AAP

The Election Commission ( EC) has issued a show cause notice to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for violating the Model Code of Conduct.

The notice was reportedly issued on Saturday after Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay complained about the AAP’s posters depicting his party’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi without her permission.

The AAP has been asked to submit its reply by Monday, failing which the poll panel would take action against it.

Kiran Bedi had earlier sent a legal notice to her rival Kejriwal for using her images in AAP’s posters without her permission.

Three killed as train hits vehicle in Odisha

Three people were killed when a passenger train rammed into their vehicle in Odisha’s Nuapada district Sunday, police said.

The accident took place at an unmanned level crossing near Kalyanpur, about 550 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar.

The car carrying them was crossing the railway track, district superintendent of police Sunil Joshi told IANS.

The Bhabanipatna-Raipur passenger train, which was on its way to Raipur hit the vehicle killing all three people including the driver on the spot, he said.

Miss Marple actress Geraldine McEwan dies at 82

Hollywood actress Geraldine McEwan has passed away at the age of 82.

McEwan, known for her roles like Agatha Christie sleuth Miss Marple from 2004 until 2009 on ITV, had suffered a stroke at the end of October, 2014, the BBC reported.

The BAFTA award winner’s son said in a statement that McEwan’s family would like to thank the staff at Charing Cross Hospital who cared for her incredibly well.
