The Shiv Sena has objected to the scheduled visit of Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi to Pune, saying it may create law and order problems if he makes controversial statements.

Action Committee, Maharashtra and Mulnivasi Muslim Manch — the Pune-based organisations — have invited Mr Owaisi as the chief guest for the February 4 event where discussion will be held on the need of reservation for Muslims. Other invitees include leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party.

Goa police arrest Italian national, recover drug worth millions

Anti-narcotics cell of police in Goa have arrested a 54-year-old Italian national and recovered drug worth one hundred million from him.

Acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted in Anjuna beach area during which accused Vincenzo Rainone was caught red-handed.

Later his house was searched where police found 30,000 LSD papers (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide) and liquid LSD.

Amit Shah to review BJP membership drive in Lucknow

Good US-India relations no threat to China: Obama

South Sudan rivals agree new ceasefire deal

South Sudan President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar has signed a new agreement to end more than 13 months of fighting in a civil war that has left tens of thousands dead.

“Complete cessation of hostilities in South Sudan is expected as of this morning (Monday),” Seyoum Mesfin, a negotiator from the regional IGAD bloc, told reporters in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa where the ceasefire deal was signed yesterday.

The two leaders have signed — and then broken — at least six previous ceasefire agreements since fighting began in December 2013.

1 hurt as small blasts rattle Bangkok mall shoppers

Police in Thailand today were investigating a pair of bombings outside a luxury shopping mall in the heart of Bangkok, the first such violence reported in the capital since last year’s army coup.

One person was slightly injured in the blasts yesterday night, and police said the small homemade bombs were designed to sow panic, not kill.

The explosions occurred about 8 pm between the upscale Paragon shopping mall and a mass transit elevated train line, which was undamaged but briefly shut as a precaution.

India to ease way for Chinese businesses, Modi visit in May

India will make it easier for Chinese companies to do business in the country as it seeks to take bilateral economic ties with China to “a qualitatively new level”, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said Sunday, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the country in May.

Sushma Swaraj told the media here that the prime minister will visit China in May before the BJP-led government completes one year in office.

The external affairs minister Sunday held talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on a range of issues including Modi’s upcoming visit.

15 countries attending Coir Kerala

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who inaugurated the five-day event, said that apart from launching various modernization schemes for the coir sector, the government has decided to extend all support to the small coir units.

IS executes Japanese journalist, Abe says won’t forgive

The Islamic State (IS) militants claimed in a video to have executed a second Japanese hostage, according to media reports Sunday. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the purported killing as “a despicable terrorist act” and vowed to “never forgive” the radical group.

The IS claimed in a one-minute video clip late Saturday to have beheaded freelance journalist and film-maker Kenji Goto, 47, after his compatriot Haruna Yukawa was killed only a few days back. Goto was known to have gone to Syria in October to secure Yukawa’s release.

France won’t write-off Greek debt

France said Sunday that it would not write off Greece’s debt, though French Finance Minister Michel Sapin proposed to discuss ways to reduce the debt burden.

Sapin said that the French government “would like to discuss ways to reduce the weight of this debt and the reimbursement of this debt”, following his meeting with Greek counterpart Yanis Varoufakis, according to a Xinhua report.

Varoufakis is on a tour of Europe to find support to ease Greece’s 320 billion euro (nearly $362 billion) debt burden, which constituted about 175 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
