Power Grid seeks $500 million loan from World Bank

Central transmission utility Power Grid Corporation has sought USD 500 million loan assistance from the World Bank for financing projects.

“Discussions are undergoing with the Ministry of Power and Ministry of Finance and the World Bank regarding funding assistance of transmission systems for evacuation of power from the solar parks,” Power Grid said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges.

Netanyahu’s spat with Obama administration worsens further

A row between the United States and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has deepened further as the Israeli leader accused America of “giving up” on trying to stop Iran from procuring nuclear weapons, a report said.

The U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry questioned Netanyahu’s judgement on the issue, reported the BBC.

The statement came as Republicans invited Netanyahu to address the U.S. Congress next week, angering Democrats.

How plants help prevent liver damage during menopause

Plants can help prevent liver damage in women caused by fat accumulated during menopause, claims a new study.

Researchers at the University of Georgia have shown in studies of post-menopausal animals that a mix of phytochemicals, along with vitamin D, may help protect the liver against inflammation caused by the accumulation of fat.

Study’s lead author Colette Miller said that women going through menopause have an increased tendency to store fat in their liver. They also have increases in visceral fat-the fat around their organs-where inflammation also occurs.

Wakf land scam: Panel began its probe

The House Committee has begun its probe, which was constituted to inquire into Wakf lands in Telangana State. The first meeting was held in the Committee’s Hall on the State Legislative Assembly premises on Wednesday.

Pak to discuss ‘all disputes’ with Indian Foreign Secretary during next month’s visit

Pakistan has reportedly said that it would discuss “all disputes” with Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar when he visits Pakistan next month.

Welcoming the Indian initiative, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told the press that the discussions would be focused on Kashmir, Siachin, Sir Creek and other issues, reported the Dawn.

India suspended foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan last year after the Pakistani envoy met Kashmiri separatist leaders.

Two-time IndyCar champion Gil De Ferran has advised injured Formula One racer Fernando Alonso not to rush comeback into the racing arena after crashing his McLaren-Honda in the final day of pre-season testing in Barcelona on Sunday that left him concussed.

Alonso hit the wall on the exit of the 150 miles-per-hour Turn Three at the Circuit de Barcelona -Catalunya, which is one of Formula One’s most demanding corners.

De Ferran, who suffered major concussions in his career, won the 2003 Indianapolis 500.

7-year-old raped, murdered in Bihar; accused arrested

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a man in Bania village here and her mutilated body was today recovered from railway tracks, police said.

The accused, Dilkhush Yadav, lured the minor yesterday to an isolated place where he allegedly raped her before murdering and dumping her on railway tracks, Superintendent of Police Shekhar Kumar said.

In what could potentially slow the progress of Parkinson’s disease, researchers have developed a peptide that sticks to the protein that causes this incurable disease, stopping it from killing brain cells.

“The results so far are very encouraging. These findings could herald a new approach to treating Parkinson’s,” said Jody Mason from the University of Bath in Britain.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition where brain cells die causing a lack of the chemical dopamine, which acts as a messenger that coordinates movement.

Tobacco use may double risk of alcohol dependency

People who use snus, a moist powder tobacco product, run twice the risk of developing alcohol dependency as compared with non-users. This suggests that nicotine dependency in any form could lead to alcohol addiction, says a new study.

The researchers added that the more one uses snus, the higher the risk. “This is the first time research has succeeded in showing that middle-aged people, who use snus run an increased risk of developing alcohol dependency,” said Margareta Norberg, adjunct lecturer at the Umea University in Sweden.

Indian teacher in Qatar forced to quit over Modi caricature

A woman teacher in an Indian school in Qatar’s capital Doha has reportedly been forced to quit her job after she posted a caricature of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on her Facebook page, media reported Thursday.

According to the report in The Peninsula daily, the incident took place last week triggering a big controversy among a section of the expatriate Indian community who said the Photoshop caricature was an insult to Modi.

In the caricature, a picture of the Indian prime minister is superimposed with that of a black-and-white striped dog emptying its bladder.

Samsung mass producing more efficient chip for smartphones

South Korean technolofgy firm Samsung Electronics announced Thursday that it has begun mass production of a new flash memory chip for smartphones, offering greater speed and capacity than those currently available on the market.

The new Universal Flash Storage (UFS) would be the industry’s first 128GB chip, though other versions with storage capacities of 32GB and 64GB would also be available, Samsung said in a statement from its headquarters in Seoul.

33 fresh swine flu cases in Telangana; 54 deaths this year

Thirty-three fresh cases of swine flu have been reported in Telangana where 54 people have succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus this year.

So far, as many as 4,381 samples have been tested for the epidemic this year out of which 1,385 emerged positive even as the number of deaths because of swine flu and related complications as on date stood 54, a health bulletin issued by the state government here said today.

According to the bulletin, 139 samples were tested yesterday and 33 were found positive for the viral infection.

Drug racket: 4 Nigerians, Tollywood director, bizman held

Four Nigerian nationals and a film director and a businessman who allegedly consumed drugs were today arrested and 90gms of cocaine 400gms of ganja were seized from them, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that a few Nigerians were trying to sell cocaine to drug addicts, a police team went to Jubilee Check Post where they found Nigerian national Samson Ebuka having money transactions with film director Anugu Shushanth Reddy and businessman Panasa Ravi Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) A Venkateshwara Rao told reporters.
