Andhra MP contracts swine flu

Kothapalli Geetha, a member of parliament in Andhra Pradesh, has been diagnosed with swine flu, officials said Monday.

The MP from Araku is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam.

She was admitted four days ago with breathing problem. Her blood sample was sent to Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) in Hyderabad and it tested positive for H1N1 virus.

Doctors said the condition of Geetha is stable and she would be discharged in a couple of days.

Geetha was elected as YSR Congress party candidate but later declared support to Telugu Desam Party.

Aus minister says freed reporter ‘immensely relieved’- report

Australian Al-Jazeera reporter Peter Greste was “immensely relieved” and “desperate to come home” after being freed from more than 400 days in detention in Egypt, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said today.

“I spoke to Peter Greste shortly after his release and before he departed Egypt,” she told reporters in Sydney, the Australian Associated Press reported.

“He was immensely relieved and he was desperate to come home to Australia and reunite with his family.”

Nigeria’s military today repelled a Boko Haram assault on the key city of Maiduguri as violence raged across the country’s northeast just two weeks before national elections.

The hours-long attack on the strategic capital of Borno state was the Islamists’ second attempt to take Maiduguri in a week.

As government forces were holding off Boko Haram in Maiduguri, the airforce of neighbouring Chad was pounding the militants’ positions in Gamboru, a town on Nigeria’s border with Cameroon 140 kilometres (87 miles)to the northeast.

France offers support for Greece amid bailout tensions

France’s Socialist government has offered support for Greece’s efforts to renegotiate debt for its huge bailout plan, amid renewed fears about Europe’s economic stability.

The backing was a victory for Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, striking a more conciliatory tone as he seeks new conditions on debt from creditors who rescued Greece’s economy to save the shared euro currency.

Worries have mounted that Greece’s new far left government might not pay back its debts.

Another church vandalised in south Delhi ahead of poll

A church was vandalised in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Monday. The incident is the fifth since December and comes just ahead of the Delhi polls.

According to authorities at St Alphonsa’s church, unidentified people jumped inside the premises of the church and broke opened the main gate.

The men then damaged cupboards, among other property inside the church. More details are awaited.
“We are investigating the incident and scanning the footage of CCTV installed near the church to identify the accused,” said a senior police official.

Egypt policeman kills hospitalised Islamist

An Egyptian policeman has been arrested for having shot dead an Islamist detained in a Cairo hospital with injuries from his arrest, the interior ministry said.

The ministry, on its Facebook page, said the victim was a member of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood arrested as he tried to plant a bomb in the capital’s Al-Warraq district, without giving a date.

The suspect had insulted and provoked his police guard in hospital, threatening to kill him. The enraged policeman had shot him dead, it said.

The ministry said the policeman was arrested yesterday and an investigation opened.

Chandrababu Naidu expresses concern over road accidents in AP

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday expressed dismay over the death of over 10 people in different road accidents in East Godavari, Krishna, Srikakulam and other districts in the state.

Naidu spoke to district collectors and revenue department officials of the respective districts. The Chief Minister was informed that the road accidents have happened due to drivers’ negligence, a state government release said.

Sushma Swaraj to meet Chinese President today

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, a day after she said that India is committed to find an “early settlement” to the boundary issue with China.

Swaraj, currently on maiden four-day visit to China, had also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the country in May this year.

Modi’s is scheduled to visit China after Jinping’s India visit in September last year.

Swaraj held bilateral talks with her Chinese counterpart on Sunday.

FIRs lodged against 16,000 in UP for power thefts

First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered against 16,000 people in the last fortnight across Uttar Pradesh for power thefts, an official said Monday.

The drive to identify and penalise power thieves was set rolling by the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) January 12 after Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, at a review meeting, asked powermen to minimise line losses and power theft.

Power officials told IANS that during the period 1.13 lakh new connections were installed and 1.19 lakh existing power connections were snapped as the consumers had not paid their bills.

The world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa in Dubai is not burning down despite the latest reports, it has been revealed.

Management from the Burj Khalifa quickly cleared up the confusion that the fog was the culprit for sparking the rumors, but there was nothing to be alarmed about, Stuff.co.nz reported.

A spokesman from Civil Defence confirmed to Emirates 24/7 the building was not alight, attributing the fog to the humidity outside reaching a certain level and creating the cloud formation seen.

BJP should publically apologise for Kejriwal ad: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday demanded a public apology from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for publishing a derogatory advertisement of the former’s chief ministerial candidate Arvind Kejriwal, adding that they would file a complaint to the Election Commission over the same.

“I was aghast to see the advertisement. They have been using abusive language for Arvind Kejriwal. They have abused the community from which he belongs. Either they should withdraw the advertisement or apologize publically. We will go to the Election Commission for the same,” said AAP spokesperson Ashutosh .

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash believes that Britain number one Andy Murray got melted down and subsequently collapsed during his Australian Open final defeat against Novak Djokovic .

Djokovic won his fifth Australian Open title with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-0 victory over Murray in a match that lasted three hours and 40 minutes.

Reflecting on Murray’s performance, Cash said that he melted down and he absolutely collapsed, adding that things started snowballing for him once he lost concentration and in the fourth set everything went against him, the BBC reported.

Screaming word ‘ow’ actually helps you deal with pain

A new study has recently revealed that screaming the word “ow” can actually help people deal with the pain.

Scientists at the National University of Singapore noticed that being vocal helps people tolerate pain longer as it is thought to be a distraction, the Daily Express reported.

It was also mentioned that not just the word “ow” can help but also other words like “ouch” and the Italian version “ahia”.

The researchers said all of those sounds are good for vocalizing pain because they are simple noises where the “mouth simply opens”.

The study is published in Journal of Pain.

President Mukherjee congratulates Leander Paes for Aus Open victory

President Pranab Mukherjee has extended his congratulations to tennis ace Leander Paes for his victory in the ‘mixed doubles’ category of the Australian Open.

The official twitter account of the Rashtrapati Bhavan shared the wishes extended by the President.

“Congratulations to Leander Paes on the Mixed Doubles win at the Australian Open# President Mukherjee,” the office posted.

On Sunday, Paes and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis beat Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had congratulated the pair on their victory.

Some deleted scenes from TV show ‘Parenthood’ finale have been released by NBC after the episode.

The series, which began in 2010, describes the story of Braverman clan, which consists of an older couple, their four children and their families. It ended on Thursday, January 29 after a six-season run.

The deleted clips include return of John Corbett’s character, Lauren Graham’s Sarah Braverman getting roasted by her family, and Ray Romano’s Hank receiving fashion advice from his daughter Ruby, among others, reported Aceshowbiz.

Bill Clinton makes surprise appearance at DiCaprio’s film

Former US President Bill Clinton made a surprise appearance at a screening of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar-nominated Netflix documentary, ‘Virunga’, at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.

‘Virunga’ is executive-produced by DiCaprio and follows a team of park rangers in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo who risk their lives to protect the home of endangered mountain gorillas.

Ann Curry moderated a Q&A following the screening with ‘Virunga’ director Orlando von Einsiedel and producer Joanna Natasegara, which discussed the message behind the film.

Murray admits was ‘distracted’ by Djokovic’s fitness issue during Oz Open final loss

Britain number one Andy Murray has admitted that he got distracted by Novak Djokovic’s fitness issues during his Australian Open final defeat against the Serbian.

Animated band Gorillaz to return

English virtual group, Gorillaz, which is fronted by four animated members will return with new music soon.

The band, created in 1998 by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, comprised 2D (lead vocals, keyboard, and melodica), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboard, and backing vocals) and Russel Hobbs, reported Entertainment Weekly.

Three injured in Assam’s blast

At least three persons were injured in a powerful explosion in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Sunday evening.

The bomb, which exploded near a police station, was planted in a shop in the busy market of the town.

Police has launched an investigation in the incident.

The Hailakandi district bordering Mizoram is affected by militants belonging to the Bru (Reang) tribe.
