Immigrants could wait until 2019 to have cases resolved

Thousands of immigrants seeking legalization through the US court system have had their hearings canceled and are being told by the government that it may be 2019 or later before their futures are resolved.

The increase in cancellations began late last summer after the Justice Department prioritized the tens of thousands of Central American families and unaccompanied children crossing the US-Mexico border.

The captain of the AirAsia flight QZ8501 that crashed into the Java Sea last year in December was out of his seat as he was conducting some unusual activity while his co-pilot apparently lost control.

According to the Independent, the captain was too late to save the plane by the time he returned, said two people close to the investigation.

They said that investigators were examining the Flight Augmentation Computer (FAC) recovered from the Airbus A320 adding that captain had taken the “very unusual” step of disabling the system.

Kiran Bedi’s campaign aide quits,accuses her of dictatorial attitude

In an embarrassment to BJP, its Chief Ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi’s campaign assistant Narendra Tandon today quit the party just days ahead of Delhi polls, accusing her of adopting “dictatorial” attitude.

Tandon, a former secretary of the party’ city unit and a permanent invitee to Delhi BJP’s executive committee, tendered his resignation saying it was difficult for him to continue working with Bedi.

BJP, however, said his quitting the party will not in any way affect its election preparations as he was a “low-level” functionary and his performance was “not impressive”.

Anti-diabetic drug may decrease lung cancer risk in nonsmokers

According to a new research, an anti-diabetic drug, metformin, may lower lung cancer risk in diabetic nonsmokers.

The research at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California, suggest that metformin may prevent cancer, but the data from human studies, however, are conflicting.

Metformin use was not associated with lower lung cancer risk overall, however, the risk was 43 percent lower among diabetic patients who had never smoked and the risk appeared to decrease with longer use.

Malala Yousafzai named among 500 most influential people in Britain

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has been named as one of the most influential people in Britain in the annual Debrett’s 500 list which includes personalities like Emma Watson and HRH Prince Henry of Wales.

The list covers 24 categories including journalism, politics, advertising, sports, architecture, education and food, reported Dawn News.

Malala was named in the list “Philanthropists and Activists” among 20 others.

Malala, 17, was the youngest in the Debrette’s list of 500 most influential people in Britain.

Khaleda Zia sued for murder of 42 during BNP-led opposition blockade

Former prime minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia and three other party leaders were sued here today for allegedly killing 42 people during the BNP-led 20-party anti-government blockade.

The blockade has been on since January 5.

The other accused are: BNP standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia, BNP vice chairman ShamserMobin Chowdhury and pro- BNP intellectual Professor Emajuddin Ahmed, reports the Daily Star.

After hearing the complaint, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman ordered Gulshan police to investigate the allegations.

Diabetes drug may up cancer risk in smokers

Depending on their smoking history, a drug may have contrary effects on people suffering from diabetes – reducing lung cancer risk among nonsmokers and increasing the risk among smokers.

Among nonsmokers who had diabetes, those who took the diabetes drug metformin had a decrease in lung cancer risk, the findings showed.

“Our results suggest that risk might differ by smoking history, with metformin decreasing risk among nonsmokers and increasing risk among current smokers,” said Lori Sakoda, research scientist at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California.

Khaleda sued for 42 murders during Bangladesh blockade

Former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia Monday was sued for the murder of 42 people during the anti-government movement led by her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since Jan 5.

Besides Zia, three other BNP officials — standing committee member Rafiqul Islam Mia, vice chairman Shamser Mobin Chowdhury and pro-BNP intellectual Emajuddin Ahmed — have also been sued, the Daily Star reported.

After hearing the complaint, Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman ordered Gulshan police to investigate the allegations.

“The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has completed its review of the proposed acquisition of Ranbaxy by Sun Pharma and has granted early termination of the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (HSR Act),” Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Ranbaxy Laboratories said in a joint statement.

Maruti Suzuki sales up 14% at 1,16,606 units in January

The country’s largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Monday reported 13.9 percent increase in total sales at 1,16,606 units in January 2015 as against 1,02,416 units in the same period last year.

The company said its domestic sales increased by 9.3 percent during the month to 1,05,559 units as against 96,569 units in January 2014.

Sales of mini segment cars, including, Alto and WagonR, declined by 7.3 percent to 35,750 units as compared to 38,565 units in the year-ago month, MSI said in a statement.

President Barack Obama has assured China not to feel threatened by good relations between the US and India, as he cautioned the Communist giant against “bullying” small countries like Vietnam or the Philippines on maritime issues.

Ten Bengaluru students allegedly tonsured

Around ten students of a private school in Bengaluru were allegedly tonsured by the hostel warden as punishment.

“Yesterday, we have received a complaint at the Cubbon Park Police Station, wherein two children have given a complaint, saying that they were studying in one of the private schools in Bengaluru and staying in the hostel facilities provided by the school, and on the 28th, one of the student’s hair was forcibly shaven off, as well as on 30th, the other child’s hair was shaven off,” DCP Central ( Bengaluru) Sandeep Patil told the media here.

White House suffers ‘security breach’; Secret Service arrest man for ‘unlawful entry’ outside premises

The man, whose identity has not yet been made public, was taken to the District of Columbia Police and charged with unlawful entry.

The United States Secret Service has reportedly arrested a man who climbed over a temporary bicycle rack outside the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said that the incident took place around 2:15 p.m. and was unsuccessful, reported ABC News.

Delhi HC issues notice to Kejriwal, EC

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and the Election Commission, acting on the plea of Congress leader Kiran Walia.

Walia had last month filed a complaint with the EC , questioning the legality of Kejriwal’s candidature. When the commission refused to entertain Walia’s complaint, she threatened to file a plea in the high court.

49 fresh cases of swine flu in Delhi

Forty nine fresh cases of swine flu have been reported in the capital with the total number of cases of the disease going up to 488 this year.

Five people have already been reported to have died this year due to the disease.

Swine flu is caused by H1N1 virus. H1N1 symptoms are similar to those produced by other influenza viruses – fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and respiratory problems.

Kidnapper and rapist auto driver held
(Siasat News): Banjara Hills police has arrested an auto driver involved in kidnapping and raping a minor girl.

As per the details, the accused Shiva, resident of Navnirman Nagar, had kidnapped a girl aged 14 and the student of class VIII and shifted her to Khammam where he allegedly raped her.

Following the complaint of the parents of the girl, a case under Nirbhay Act was registered and Shiva was arrested. He would be produced in the court.
