Not contemplating retirement for next two years: Sehwag

Sidelined India batsman Virender Sehwag has ruled out the possibility of retiring from cricket and has expressed his insistence on playing for “atleast the next two years.”

Sehwag was dropped from the impending World Cup’s 30-member preliminary squad following a prolonged form slump. The right-handed batsman said he was still keen to play competitive cricket and has no imminent plans of quitting the game.

The petition was put forth by a Pakistani citizen named Rana Faizul Hasan, who said that the players who had brought disgrace to the nation should not be permitted to play the sport, the Dawn reported.

Justice Muhammad Ali will head a division bench to hear the petition, with the next hearing scheduled to be held on February 16, the report added.

China said Monday that it opposes any meeting between any country’s leaders and the Dalai Lama “in any form”.

The comments came in response to a question regarding a possible meeting between US President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama at a Feb 5 “prayer breakfast”, Xinhua reported.

“We strongly oppose any country interfering in China’s internal affairs in the name of issues regarding Tibet,” the spokesperson said.

“Issues regarding Tibet concern China’s core interests and national sentiments,” he stated.

Fresh snowfall shuts Srinagar-Jammu highway

Fresh snowfall on Monday closed the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway as the weather office forecast heavy snowfall during the next 24 hours.

“The Srinagar-Jammu highway has been closed because of more than three-feet deep snow on the highway in Bannihal and Batote sectors.”

“Clearance operations will start after the snowfall stops,” a senior official of the traffic department told IANS here.

Continuing snowfall also resulted in poor visibility, and air traffic to and from the Kashmir valley was disrupted today (Monday).

As many as 96 youths started the agitation Jan 27 at the WBSSC (West Bengal School Service Commission) office in Salt Lake in east Kolkata, demanding employment in government-aided schools in accordance with their enlistment after passing the exam in 2012.

91 juveniles flee from observation home in Meerut

As many as 91 juveniles on Monday fled from the Surajkund observation home in Nauchandi area here, following which two constables were suspended for dereliction of duty, police said.

The incident took place in the wee hours today and 40 of the juveniles have been nabbed by different police teams, Superintendent of Police (City) Om Prakash said.

The juveniles escaped by crossing the boundary wall of the home, using ropes made of blankets and bedsheets, he said.

However, till now 40 juveniles have been held by police and a search for others is on, the SP said.

SC stays proceedings on fresh complaints against Ramdev

Supreme Court on Monday stayed fresh criminal proceedings initiated recently in different parts of country against Yoga guru Ramdev, for his alleged controversial “honeymoon” remarks targeting Rahul Gandhi over visiting homes of Dalits.

“Our earlier interim order (of May 9 last year) shall continue in other matters also,” a bench comprising Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justice AK Sikri said.

During the hearing, lawyer Keshav Mohan, appearing for Ramdev, said it has come to light that around eleven more complaints have been filed in different parts of the country.
