5-year-old molested by school peon

A five-year-old girl was molested on the terrace of her play school by a peon here following which the accused has been arrested, police said today.

The incident took place on Saturday when the accused, Sonu Kanaujiya, lured the girl to the terrace during lunch-time and molested her, police said.

On reaching home from school, the victim revealed the incident to her mother following which on Sunday the family registered a complaint with the police, they said.

Obama proposes over USD 1 bn civil and military aid to Pak

US President Barack Obama today proposed more than USD 1 billion in civilian and military aid to Pakistan, describing it as a “strategically important nation”.

The key elements of the proposed budget include strengthening Pakistani military for its fight against extremism, safety of nuclear installation, stability in Afghanistan, economic development and improvement in ties with India.

UN pays tribute to late Saudi King Abdullah

The UN General Assembly Monday paid tribute to late Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Xinhua reported.

“King Abdullah was a wise and compassionate leader who guided Saudi Arabia’s development, worked to resolve peace and security challenges and address counter-terrorism,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at a session of the assembly.

He called Abdullah “a champion against global hunger” who gave the World Food Program its largest single donation — $500 million during the 2008 crisis over high food prices and generously supported humanitarian efforts in Syria and Iraq.

35 African migrants feared drowned off Yemen coast

At least 35 migrants fleeing Africa were feared drowned after their boat sank off the Yemeni coast Monday, Yemeni state-run Saba news agency reported.

The small smuggling boat was carrying 49 Africans. It sank Monday off southwest coast of Yemen between Miyun Island and Thubab coast after it capsised due to strong currents and waves.

Commander of the 17th Infantry Brigade Brig. Saleh al-Sobari explained that the brigade patrols managed to rescue 13 people, icluding five Somalis and eight Ethiopians, and recovered a body of a Somali.

One killed, five abducted by militants in Pakistan

Militants attacked a power grid station and killed an employee Monday evening, while five officials of the irrigation department were kidnapped in a separate incident in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, media reported.

Police sources said that the militants opened fire at Quetta Electric Supply Company (Qesco) grid station in Gwadar bazaar, killing one employee on the spot, Dawn online reported.

After the attack the assailants sped away on their motorcycles.

In another incident, armed militants abducted five employees of irrigation department from Shadi Core area of Mekran.

Pakistan successfully tests new stealth cruise missile

Pakistan on Monday successfully test-fired a new indigenously developed cruise missile capable of delivering nuclear and conventional warheads up to 350 km, bringing many Indian cities under its range.

The Ra’ad missile enables Pakistan to achieve “strategic standoff capability” on land and at sea, as it uses extremely complex “Cruise Technology” that has been developed by only a few countries in the world, Pakistan army said.

Britons dislike Israel more than Iran and Pakistan: survey

Israel is the second most disliked non-European country among Britons, ahead of Iran and Pakistan but behind the beleaguered North Korea, a new research suggests, that also ranks India as the fifth most “favourable” nation.

The research, entitled ‘Internationalism or Isolationism’ British attitudes towards the UK’s international priorities’ classed the top five least favourable nations among Britons as North Korea, Israel, Iran, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Outside of Europe, Australia is the most “favourable” nation, followed by Canada, US, Japan and India.

Chinese President likely to be chief guest at Pakistan Day parade in March

After a gap of seven years, Pakistan will hold a joint military parade of its armed forces on its national day next month where Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to be the chief guest.

The decision came just days after India held its grand 66th Republic Day parade in which US President Barack Obama was the chief guest. Obama’s visit had raised eyebrows in both Pakistan and China.

The joint military parade of the three branches of armed forces had been the hallmark of the Pakistan Day festivities, which features display of military hardware and cultural activities.

It has long been presumed that Kiran Bedi had towed away late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s car in 1982 when she was in-charge of traffic police but the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate today sought to end the controversy by saying it was a sub-inspector working under her who had removed the vehicle.

BJP government hatching conspiracy against me: Kejriwal

Nearly 1,400 Iraqis killed in January: UN

The United Nations said here Monday that a total of 1,375 Iraqis were killed and another 2,240 were wounded in acts of terrorism and violence in January, Xinhua reported.

Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesman, made the statement at a daily news briefing here, citing latest casualty figures released by the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

“The number of civilians killed was 790 and the number of civilians injured, 1,469,” Dujarric said. “Baghdad was the worst impacted Governorate, with 1,014 civilian casualties.”

Woman among two persons commit suicide

A 48-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling in the Saroornagar police limits.

The deceased, D Lavanya, took the extreme step at her residence in Reddy Colony of Champapet on Sunday night. Financial problems are suspected to have driven Lavanya to suicide, according to police.

Two pedestrians killed in road accidents

A 64-year-old man succumbed to the injuries which he suffered after he was hit by a car in Langar Houz police limits.

The victim, Ravinder Prasad Shukla, a businessman, suffered grievous injuries after he was hit by a car near his residence in Babu Ghat of Langar Houz on Sunday. He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where he died on Sunday night.

Painter killed in train accident

A 19-year-old youth died on the spot after he was hit by a train near Budwel Railway Station.

According to Kachiguda Railway Police, the accident occurred on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as Vijay Kumar, a painter and native of Khushi Nagar of Uttar Pradesh. (INN)

B Tech student dies of electrocution

A 24-year-old B Tech student died after he got electrocuted and fell down from the balcony of a first floor building.

According to Kukatpally police, the victim, L Govardhan Reddy, got electrocuted after coming in contact with a live wire on the first floor of his relatives’ house in Balaji Nagar on Sunday evening. Under the impact of electrocution, he fell down and suffered a grievous head injury. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Metro Rail works to hit train services in city

In order to facilitate Metro Rail crossing works over the SCR Rail track network between Bharatnagar and Sanathnagar stations in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the South Central Railway will impose a block on train movements in this section from 12:15 pm to 03:15 pm on 03rd and 07th February.

The block will result in the cancellation of as many as MMTS 20 services on 3rd and 7th February. They include, all the 18 MMTS services which run to and from Lingamapalli between 12.15 pm to 03.15 pm and Lingampalli – Falaknuma MMTS and Hyderabad – Lingampalli MMTS.

Philippines aim to attract nearly 70,000 Indian tourists in the current year, a senior official of Philippines Department of Tourism said.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of road show here, Chief Tourism Operations Officer (Team India) of Philippines Department of Tourism Glen A Agustin informed that as many as 52,000 tourists arrived in Philippines from India in 2013. And target for 2015 is nearly 70,000 tourists. He said Philippines Tourism was launching some tour packages this year, which is the ‘Visit Philippines Year’.

The Hyderabad High Court on Monday pulled up the Telangana Government for the delay in conducting the elections for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

The High Court directed the State Government to submit its reply within a week giving the dates for conduct of GHMC polls. Condemning the lethargic attitude of the State Government, the court said that the government could not be lenient on conducting the local bodies’ elections for long.
