‘No Jews’ job ad in France sparks furore

A French anti-racism organisation today filed an official complaint for discrimination after a company published a job ad online looking for a computer graphics designer who “if possible” is “not Jewish.”

The job description, which was published yesterday on specialised website www.Graphic-jobs.Com by graphic design agency NSL Studio and has since been removed, sparked a furore on the Internet.

Russian mother of 7 suspected of treason released

A mother of seven accused of spying for Ukraine was released from custody in Russia today following public outrage.

Svetlana Davydova, 37, was arrested Jan 21 at her home in the town of Vyazma, west of Moscow. The Federal Security Service, the main KGB successor, had detained her on charges of treason that carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Even though released, Davydova’s case is still pending. Her youngest child is a 2-month-old baby whom she was breastfeeding.

Jalandhar man dies of swine flu

A 35-year-old man, who died in a Ludhiana hospital, has tested positive for swine flu, officials said today.

Sandeep, a resident of Nakodar in Jalandhar district, died on January 31, Jalandhar civil surgeon R L Vasan.

He was first admitted to the Nakodar Sadar Hospital and then shifted to a private facility in Jalandhar with symptoms of swine flue.

Finally, he was shifted to the Ludhiana DMC Hospital, where doctors sent his sample to Chandigarh on January 30.

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandi Patel will address two rallies in support of BJP candidates in Delhi, which goes to the polls on February 7.

“Our Chief Minister will address two election rallies tomorrow evening, one in Janakpuri and another in Pritampura, in support of BJP candidates,” the party’s state unit Media Convener Harshad Patel said today.

She will be accompanied by several top BJP leaders and ministers from Gujarat, including Health Minister Nitin Patel, he added.

US, Iran discussing nuclear talks compromise

Diplomats say the US and Iran are discussing a compromise that would let Iran keep much of its uranium-enriching technology but reduce its potential to make nuclear weapons.

The two diplomats told The Associated Press that such a compromise could break the decade-long deadlock on attempts to limit Iranian activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons. Tehran has refused to meet US-led demands for deep cuts in the number of centrifuges used to enrich uranium, a process that can create material for the core of an atomic bomb.

Russia evicts Polish consulate over USD 1 million unpaid rent

The Polish consulate was ordered today to vacate its offices in Russia’s second largest city over an unpaid rent bill, which comes as the two nations engage in an increasingly acrimonious tit-for-tat.

The regional arbitration court ruled in favour of a state firm which sued the consulate over some 74 million rubles (USD 1.1 million, 960,000 euros) in unpaid rent, demanding that its staff be kicked out of the Saint Petersburg location.

Low infection rate halts Ebola vaccine trials in Liberia

Britain’s Wellcome Trust said that clinical trials it was funding for a new Ebola vaccine in Liberia were halted today due to a fall in new cases.

“The current position is that there is no realistic prospect of the trial enrolling sufficient patients to be able to reach a conclusion about the efficacy of the drug,” the Wellcome Trust, Britain’s biggest scientific research charity, said in a statement.

“Therefore the trial has been terminated,” it added.

Chinese FM to visit Pak to finalise Xi’s trip

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Pakistan next week to finalise President Xi Jinping’s trip to the country in March, a media report said today.

Wang will arrive here on February 9 and meet Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the PM House and Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz to finalise the scheduled visit of Xi from March 22, Dawn newspaper said.

A diplomatic source had told the newspaper that the Chinese president is expected to attend the Pakistan Day parade as chief guest on March 23.

Rap mogul ‘Suge’ Knight denies murder, is hospitalized

Rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight pleaded not guilty today to murder and attempted murder over a hit-and-run that left one man dead and another in the hospital.

The 49-year-old Knight, who could face life in prison if convicted, also denied two other charges over the incident in Los Angeles last week.

Shortly after entering his plea, Knight was taken to the hospital for an undisclosed medical problem, officials said.

Former US judge Mary McGowan Davis was today appointed the new head of the UN inquiry into possible war crimes during the Gaza conflict last year to replace William Schabas who resigned after Israel accused him of a “conflict of interest”.

Schabas resigned yesterday after Israeli side accused him of bias due to consultancy work he did for the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

Obama: Jordan hostage video shows IS ‘barbarity’

US President Barack Obama today said that if a video purporting to show the burning alive of a Jordanian pilot is authenticated, it just shows the organization’s “barbarity.”

“Should in fact this video be authentic, it’s just one more indication of the viciousness (and) barbarity of this organization,” Obama said.

“This organization is only interested in death and destruction,” he said when asked about the video at a brief public appearance.

Intel chief warns US tech threatened by China cyber theft

The US defense intelligence chief is warning that America’s technological edge over China is at risk because of cyber theft.

Lt Gen Vincent Stewart, director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency, says the US retains technological superiority. But he also says China has stolen “a lot” of intellectual property from US defense contractors and that effort continues.

He’s declining to say publicly whether that has affected US defense capabilities.

Stewart was speaking at a congressional hearing today on worldwide threats.

Canada police make IS terror cell arrest

A senior police official says Canadian police have made another arrest and are announcing charges against three men related to an Islamic State recruiting terror cell in Ottawa.

The official said today the case is linked to the arrest of three men in in Ottawa last month. It involves alleged recruiting for the Islamic State group and Canadian John Maguire, a fighter who appeared in an IS video overseas and who reportedly might have been killed recently.

PNB net profit up 2.5% to Rs 775 crore

Punjab National Bank on Tuesday posted a marginal 2.5 percent increase in net profit to Rs 774.56 crore for its third quarter ended December 31, on account of higher provisioning for bad loans.

The country’s second largest public sector bank by assets had reported net profit of Rs 755.41 crore for the October- December quarter of the 2013-14 financial year.

Poor performance of the bank pulled its share price down by nearly 7 percent to Rs 179.20 on the BSE after the numbers were announced.

Jordan pilot was killed one month ago: state TV

It said the captured airman had been killed by the group on January 3, before the jihadists offered to spare his life and free a Japanese journalist in return for the release of a female would-be suicide bomber on death row in Jordan.

3 children, 1 adult drown in Guyana after Hindu rite

Three children and an adult drowned in waters off western Guyana after performing a Hindu ritual for a dead relative.

Police said today that Radika Persaud, her teenage son, a young nephew and a niece perished while swimming in the choppy Atlantic off a coastline in the country’s Essequibo region.

Authorities say the relatives had just participated in a religious ceremony on the beach marking the one-year anniversary of a loved one’s death. Local Hindu families regularly gather at the beach in western Guyana for observances.

UN chief decries ‘appalling’ IS killing of Jordan pilot

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the apparent burning alive of a Jordanian pilot by Islamic State militants, calling it an “appalling act.”

Ban labeled the IS group “a terrorist organisation with no regard for human life” yesterday and urged world governments to redouble their efforts to “combat the scourge of terrorism and extremism,” according to his spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

First Lieutenant Maaz al-Kassasbeh was captured in December when his F-16 jet crashed over northern Syria, a mission that was part of the US-led coalition campaign against the IS fighters.

Aspen police cited Armstrong with failing to report an accident and speeding weeks after the Dec 28 accident, but only after his girlfriend, Anna Hansen, admitted to lying for him.

Armstrong declined immediate comment, and his attorney, Pamela Mackey, didn’t immediately return a call.
