Natarajan was propped up when I attacked Modi: Rahul

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said his former fellow party leader Jayanthi Natarajan was propped up against him after he slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“A few days back, I said something against Modi, and the next day, they propped up Jayanthi Natarajan,” Rahul Gandhi said at a Congress rally at Azadpur in north Delhi ahead of the polls to the 70-member Delhi assembly Saturday.

He accepted that he had advised Natarajan, the then minister of state of environment and forests, to work for the poor and the tribals. He said he was was not “scared” of anyone.

RIL hits overseas debt market again, may raise $1 billion

Reliance Industries has hit the forex debt market second time in as many weeks to raise about $1 billion in a benchmark 30-year dollar-money note sale to international investors.

On January 22, the company had raised $1 billion by selling 10-year bonds at an interest rate of 4.125 per cent, which the company claimed was the lowest in Asia and with almost no new-issue premium. In 2014, the company had raised over $3.3 billion in forex debt.

KMSS protests against BJP terming North-East people as ‘immigrants’

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), a peasant organization based in Assam, on Wednesday staged a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party , expressing its disapproval towards the ‘vision document’ printed by the party for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, which referred to people hailing from the North-East as ‘ immigrants’.

Akhil Gogoi, General Secretary of the KMSS led the protest with hundreds of supporters following him, carrying banners which read ‘Modi ji, change your mindset’ and ‘We oppose BJP’s vision NE people as foreigners’.

Case against Sharad Yadav for casteist remarks against Bihar CM Jitan Ram Manjhi

A case has been registered against JD(U) President Sharad Yadav for his alleged casteist remarks against Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

“A case has been registered against Sharad Yadav in Airport Police station under SC/ST (Prevention of atrocities) Act on the direction of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Patna Jitendra Rana.

Rana said the case was registered last night on order of Patna Chief Judicial Magistrate Bharat Singh, who had summoned the police to his court.

Gold drops Rs. 180 on subdued demand, global cues

Gold prices fell by Rs. 180 at Rs. 28,090 per 10 gram at the bullion market on Wednesday on slackened demand from jewellers and retailers amid a weakening global trend.

Silver also fell by Rs. 50 at Rs. 38,400 per kg on reduced off-take by industrial units and coin makers.

Traders said besides sluggish demand from jewellers and retailers at current levels, a weakening global trend as easing concerns on Greek debt boosted global equities, mainly kept pressure on gold and silver prices.

Delhi poll results not a referendum on Modi govt’s performance: Naidu

Police in search of Chain-snatcher who flee from Custody

A notorious chain-snatcher Aqueeluddin alias Khalifa, who escaped from police custody at Kothapet, the 21-year-old, was allegedly involved in about 150 cases of chain-snatching. He was arrested at least three times by Hyderabad and Cyberabad police.

According to the police, Aqueeluddin was taken on a Prisoner Transit (PT) warrant from Cherlapally Central Prison to Ranga Reddy district courts at L.B. Nagar by L.B. Nagar police in a case of chain-snatching. After producing him before the court, two constables Shehkar and Upendar were taking him back to the prison, the police said.

Retirement age for UP government doctors raised to 65

The Uttar Pradesh government Wednesday announced that the retirement age of government doctors in the state will be 65 years. The present age of retirement for government doctors in UP is 62 years.

The proposal was approved at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The cabinet also gave the green signal to the appointment of 1300 ‘kanungo’ and giving the benefits of the sixth pay commission to the Yuva Kalyan Parishad employees.

The state cabinet also approved medical university status for the Saifai PGI in the village of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

India’s Haj quota fixed at 136,020 for this year

The Haj quota for India for 2015 has been fixed at 136,020 pilgrims following the conclusion of the annual Haj agreement between India and Saudi Arabia.

The agreement was signed by Minister of State for External Affairs V.K Singh Saudi Minister for Haj Bandar Hajjar in Jeddah.

During his visit to Saudi Arabia, Singh met Bandar Hajjar and discussed issues pertaining to arrangements for the Haj 2015, Arab News reported.

Of the pilgrim quota fixed for India, 100,020 pilgrims will come through Haj Committee of India (HCI) and the remaining 36,000 through private tour operators.

CBI searches Saradha office in Odisha

The CBI Wednesday searched the office of Saradha company in Puri in connection with a chit fund scam in Odisha.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) searched the office of the Kolkata-based company at Badashankha in Puri, said CBI sources.

The company allegedly duped thousands of depositors to the tune of Rs.10 crore in the area. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the state Crime Branch had sealed the branch of the company in April 2014.

Delhi Police prepares for Assembly Election

Over 60,000 policemen and paramilitary personnel will be deployed to conduct free and fair Delhi Assembly Elections on February 7.

Paramilitary forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force and Border Security Force, will be in charge of internal security at 11,763 polling stations in 70 assembly segments across Delhi. Home guards will also be deployed at the polling stations.

The number of sensitive polling stations has increased from 677 in 2013 to 695 this year of which 173 are highly critical.

Video: TransAsia plane crashes into Taiwan river, 16 killed

A Taiwanese flight with 58 people turned on its side in midair, clipped an elevated roadway and careened into a river Wednesday shortly after takeoff from the island’s capital of Taipei, killing at least 16 people, local media and officials said.

The death toll in the TransAsia Airways flight was expected to rise as rescue crews cleared the mostly sunken fuselage in the Keelung River a couple dozen meters (yards) from the shore. Teams of rescuers in rubber rafts clustered around the wreckage.

China’s mobile internet users touch 557M

The number of mobile internet users in China has reportedly reached to 557 million as of December 2014.

According to Tech Crunch, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) , a government organization, has released its latest report on Internet usage.

The country recorded a growth of 11.4 percent from the previous year.

There are a total of 649 million internet users in the country at present, which follows a five percent increase from last year.

The growth brings China’s Internet penetration rate to 47.9 percent, the report added. (ANI)

Rains lash Kashmir Valley; weather to remain dry in coming days

Rains lashed Kashmir Valley on Wednesday after three days of intermittent snowfall even as the minimum temperatures went down at all places except the summer capital Srinagar with the MeT department predicting mainly dry weather in the coming days.

Almost all places in Kashmir received rains during the night and no fresh snowfall was recorded from any part of the Valley, a MeT department spokesman said here.
