Maharashtra govt to ban tobacco consumption at public places: Fadnavis

Maharashtra government will soon impose a ban on tobacco consumption at public places, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Wednesday.

“Cancer caused by consumption of tobacco, gutkha, paan masala and cigarettes affects not only that individual, but an entire family is destroyed,” he said.

“Consumption of tobacco at public places will be banned and necessary steps taken in this regard,” Fadnavis said after visiting the Tata Memorial Hospital here on World Cancer Day.

AAP received black money as funds: Jaitley

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Wednesday accused the AAP of receiving black money, and termed the party a “brilliant propagandist” who wears the “label of honesty” on its sleeves.

Jaitley said in an article on the Bharatiya Janata Party website that the Aam Aadmi Party received black money through fake companies.

“It disclosed the names of a large number of corporate entities from whom it received donations by cheques,” Jaitley wrote.

TransAsia plane crash: Death toll rises to 23 as rescue team continues operation to pull out passengers

Almost 23 people have been confirmed dead and 15 injured seven hours after a Taiwanese TransAsia Airways flight, with more than 50 people onboard, hit a bridge and crashed into a river near the capital Taipei.

Nearly 20 people are still missing as the rescue team continues operations to pull out survivors from the aircraft’s submerged wreck, reported China Daily.

Court sends Dawood’s brother to police custody till Feb.6

A court on Wednesday sent Iqbal Kaskar, the brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, to police custody till February 6.

The Mumbai Police had earlier on Tuesday arrested Kaskar and two of his associates on charges of extortion following a complaint by city-based real estate agent Salim Shaikh.

Shaikh had alleged that Kaskar and his associates demanded Rs three lakhs from him, following which he was thrashed.

Man held with gold worth Rs one crore at international airport

A man has been arrested at the international airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valued at about Rs one crore.

The passenger was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival here from Bangkok on Monday. He was trying to smuggle the gold with the help of another person who works as a baggage service agent at the airport, a release issued today by the customs said.

27 persons test positive for swine flu in Lucknow

Two more persons here have been tested positive for swine flu, taking the total number of patients affected by H1NI virus to 27 in the state capital, a senior health official said today.

Two persons — Ashish Saran (35), a resident of Aishbagh colony and Kartikeshan (14), a resident of Rajajipuram, were tested positive for H1N1 yesterday, Chief Medical Officer, SNS Yadav said.

With this, a total of 27 swine flu patients have been detected in Lucknow so far, out of which five are admitted in SGPGI, he said.

NIA arrests one more in Burdwan blast case

NIA has arrested a close aide of suspected Burdwan blast mastermind Sheikh Rehmatullah alias Sajjid for allegedly running a recruitment camp for Jamaat-ul- Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror outfit from a madrassa in Murshidabad, taking the number of arrests in the case to 17.

The person identified as Mufazzil Haque was arrested from Mokimnagar area of the district bordering Bangladesh last night, official sources said.

Sensex down 117 points to slip below 29,000

Extending losses for the fourth straight day, the benchmark BSE sensex on Wednesday fell over 117 points to slip below the 29,000-mark after nearly two weeks as funds and retail investors indulged in profit-booking amid mixed global cues.

After surging to 29,133.62 points at the outset on emergence of buying, the sensex fell and touched the day’s low of 28,824.68 before ending 117.03 points, or 0.40 per cent, lower at 28,883.11.

Major losers that pulled down the sensex and Nifty were Axis bank, BHEL, SBI, L&T, Tata Motors, TCS, Maruti, Hindustan Unilver, RIL, and Bharti Airtel.

Businessman among two commits suicide

A 38-year-old businessman committed suicide allegedly due to financial problems.

According to Keesra police, the deceased, S Ramalinga Reddy, took the extreme step by consuming some unknown poison in an agricultural field near his residence in Bhavani Nagar of Nagaram in Survey No 94 on Monday. He died on the spot.

12-year-old boy’s body found in nala

The Chaderghat police on Tuesday retrieved the body of a 12-year-old unidentified boy from Azampura nala.

The body is highly decomposed. The body has been preserved at the Osmania General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem and identification. Police began investigation after registering a case of suspicious death. (INN)

Lenovo has surpassed expectations by netting profits of 253 million dollars in the three months to December after sales in its smartphone division more than doubled. Analysts had earlier predicted profits of 200 million dollars and revenues of for the company.

The company also outdid revenue expectations as it posted a 31 percent rise and netted 14.1 billion dollars as opposed to forecasts for 13.7 billion dollars in sales, reported the BBC.
