Hollande calls for dialogue to fix Greek debt crisis

French President Francois Hollande Wednesday called for a transparent and serene dialogue over the Greek debt crisis, and also for the respect of European Union financial rules.

“A dialogue should take place in transparency and serenity. It should be strengthened to lead to an agreement,” Hollande said.

The French head of state also stressed that Europe should work more to further cement solidarity via pro-growth measures which could help the bloc to boost economic activities and tackle unemployment headache.

One more arrest in Burdwan blast case

A madrassa teacher, said to be a close aide of suspected Burdwan blast mastermind Sheikh Rehmatullah alias Sajjid, has been arrested from West Bengal’s Murshidabad district by the NIA, officials said Wednesday.

Mufazzil Haque, who runs a madrassa in Murshidabad, was arrested from Mukimnagar area Tuesday night for his alleged involvement in recruiting youths for militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

National Investigation Agency (NIA) personnel came to know about Haque following the interrogation of four people arrested recently from the state.

Accused can’t be kept in custody for indefinite period: SC

Supreme Court on Wednesday said speedy trial was the “right of the accused” who cannot be kept in custody for an indefinite period if trial is unlikely to conclude within a reasonable time.

“It is well settled that at pre-conviction stage, there is presumption of innocence. The object of keeping a person in custody is to ensure his availability to face trial and to receive the sentence that may be passed. The detention is not supposed to be punitive or preventive,” the apex court said.

AAP will sweep 51 seats, BJP 15: AAP survey

Two days ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, an internal survey by AAP today predicted a clear majority for it giving itself 51 seats followed by 15 to BJP and a paltry four seats for Congress and others.

Releasing the results of the survey, party leader Yogendra Yadav claimed 53 per cent voters in the city preferred Arvind Kejriwal as their Chief Minister while 34 per cent wanted BJP’s Kiran Bedi to head the next government.

NIA arrests close aide of Burdwan blast mastermind

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a close aide of Sheikh Rehmatullah alias Sajjid, a suspect of Burdwan blast in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

According to reports, Mufazzil Haque was nabbed from the Mokimnagar area of the district bordering Bangladesh on Tuesday night.

Sheikh Rehmatullah alias Sajjid was allegedly running a recruitment camp for terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from a madrassa in Murshidabad.

Home Secretary Goswami sacked for role in Matang Sinh arrest

Home Secretary Anil Goswami on Wednesday was sacked for allegedly interfering with the Central Bureau of Investigation over the arrest by the agency of Saradha Scam accused Matang Sinh.

According to reports, Goswami had earlier in the day been summoned by the Prime Minister’s Office over the issue and was invited to put forth his version.

Goswami, a 1978 IAS officer, was due to retire in July after serving a two-year tenure and was the first bureaucrat from Jammu and Kashmir to rise to the post of Home Secretary.

Mamata expresses solidarity with Christian march in Delhi

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday expressed “full solidarity” with the silent protest march called by the Christian community in Delhi Thursday against attacks on churches.

“We extend our full solidarity and support to the procession in Delhi tomorrow (Thursday) 5 Feb at 9.30 AM from GPO to Home Min(ister Rajnath Singh’s) residence,” Banerjee tweeted.

In another tweet, the Trinamool Congress chief apparently targeted the BJP, without naming it. “One party is doing petty politics,” she alleged.

Ban on Togadia: Karnataka Assembly disrupted

Google removed more than 500 mln bad ads in 2014

A new annual review report released by Google has said that the company banned more than 214,000 advertisers and disabled nearly 500 million bad ads in 2014.

Andhra planning industrial city to attract Japanese investors

Andhra Pradesh is planning a separate industrial city to attract investments from Japan Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said Wednesday during a meeting with officials of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

17 soldiers killed in Boko Haram attacks in Cameroon

Three Cameroonian soldiers and 14 Chadian soldiers died and a large number of Boko Haram militants were killed when the group attacked military camps in Fotokol, a border town in Cameroon’s Far North Region neighbouring Nigeria Wednesday morning, military sources told Xinhua news agency.

The sources put the number of Boko Haram militants at around 7,000, adding that they had 30 armoured trucks, about 10 ordinary vehicles and hundreds of motorcycles, as well as sophisticated weapons.
