Suicide car bomber targets Yemen army base, killing 5

Security officials say a suicide car bomber has targeted a military base in central Yemen, killing at least five troops.

The officials say today’s bombing struck the gates of the base in the province of Bayda, which has seen fierce clashes between Shiite Houthi rebels who last year overran the capital of Sanaa and al-Qaida militants allied with Sunni tribesmen.

The officials say that elsewhere in Bayda, a senior Houthi member was killed. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to reporters.

World Bank probes internal handling of Chinese loan

The World Bank is investigating the handling of a USD 1 billion loan from China to help fund poor countries, sources familiar with the matter said today.

The global development lender was quick to stress that the probe did not implicate Beijing, which increasingly is an important force in the bank’s activities.

But the probe will examine how key bank units, including the International Development Association and International Finance Corporation, created an unusual structure to accomodate the Chinese loan.

Spanish court sentences six Somalis for piracy

A Spanish court today convicted six Somalis for piracy and sentenced them each to 16 and a half years in jail for attacking a Spanish tuna trawler off the coast of Somalia in 2012.

The six men have been held in a Spanish jail since November 2012 since being caught by Dutch sailors after they ambushed the Izurdia off the Horn of Africa using AK-47 assault rifles.

Spain’s National Court, the country top criminal court, convicted the six of piracy and membership of a criminal group.

Ford adds 1,550 jobs to build new F-150 pickup truck

Ford Motor said today it was adding 1,550 jobs in response to growing consumer demand for its new aluminum-bodied F-150 pickup truck.

Ford said the additional jobs will support stepped-up production of the 2015 Ford F-150, which went on sale in December. The F-150 is the best-selling truck in the United States and the all-new lighter version was named North American truck of the year at last month’s Detroit auto show.

Mexico raises death toll to 4 from gas explosion at hospital

A nurse who was trying to help newborns to safety as a dangerous gas cloud formed at a Mexico City hospital has died of injuries she suffered when it ignited in a massive fireball, authorities said today.

Monica Orta Ramirez, 35, became the fourth fatal victim of last week’s explosion at the Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Cuajimalpa, a borough on the western edge of the capital. She died yesterday, the city government said in a statement.

Jharkhandi youth won’t allow outsider ‘grab’ job: Hemant

Former Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Hemant Soren today said the youth of state should get first priority in getting jobs and not ‘candidates’ from other states.

Addressing JMM’s 43rd foundation day function at Golf Ground, Soren alleged that Jharkhandi youth “are being beaten and driven out in other states when they go there for job.”

He maintained that the Raghubar Das government had amended law for recruitment of police in which candidates of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh have been given priority.

Despite huge claims, New India net up 42% on investment income

Despite an underwriting loss of Rs 1,793 crore due to huge claims from Hudhud cyclone and the killer J-K floods, New India Assurance today reported 42 per cent rise in net income at Rs 996 crore in the December quarter, driven by higher investment income and improved efficiency.

The investment income rose to Rs 2,980 crore during the period under observation from Rs 2,345 crore in a year-ago period.

The incurred loss ratio increased by around one per cent to 87.24 per cent during the reporting period from 86.26 per cent.

India among top 3 nations generating most billionaires

India has for the first time managed to find a place among the top three countries generating most number of billionaires in the world with Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani, heading the Hurun Global Rich List-India 2015 of wealthiest in the country.

The India list gives details of the richest people in the country with a cut off wealth of Rs 6,000 crore. Mukesh Ambani with a a wealth of Rs 1.2 lakh crore tops the list among billionaires in the country, followed by Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharma with an estimated wealth of Rs 1.02 lakh crore.

N. Srinivasan wants to return as BCCI President

Former BCCI President N. Srinivasan, who is caught amidst IPL betting and spot fixing controversies, wants to return as BCCI President, according to NDTV.

Srinivasan wants to contest the BCCI elections to get his chair back. He will be holding a meeting with his loyalists on Saturday.

The former BCCI President met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday.

Jaitley made it clear to Srinivasan that he cannot go against the orders of the Supreme Court.

Thus, Srini can contest the BCCI elections only if he sells out his IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Toll in the TransAsia Airways plane crash in Taiwan has risen to 31, Xinhua news agency reported Thursday.

Flight GE235, which was heading to Kinmen in China from Taipei with 53 passengers on board, including five crew members, crashed into the Keelung river in Taipei Wednesday morning, ten minutes after it tookeoff.

The crash also left 15 injured, and 12 missing, according to updates of local civil aeronautics authority as of 6 a.m. Thursday.

Bodies of the captain and two co-pilots have been discovered, and the plane’s two black boxes recovered.

Musharraf exempted from appearance in Bugati case

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court today exempted ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf from appearing in the murder case of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti even as it adjourned the hearing till February 25.

The court in Balochistan’s provincial capital Quetta had charge-sheeted 71-year-old Musharraf last month for the 2006 killing of Bugti.

The judge had ordered that the case would be heard on a daily basis from today onwards.

Tutor ‘elopes’ with teenager

A tutor allegedly eloped with a teenage girl whom he privately coached at his residence at Kanwali village, some 28 km from here, police said today.

Deepak allegedly eloped with a teenage girl (17), a student of class XI, on January 31, police said.

After having received information from his relatives in this regard, the girl’s father, a resident of Mahendergarh district, filed a complaint on February 2 following which police registered a case of abduction against Deepak.

25 militants killed in Pakistani army offensive

At least 25 suspected militants were killed and seven hideouts destroyed in an offensive carried out by the security forces in Pakistan’s South Waziristan and Khyber tribal agencies Wednesday, media reported.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said the operations were carried out in Sanzila area of South Waziristan and Tirrah Valley in Khyber Agency, Geo News reported.

The statement said that at least 25 militants were killed and seven terrorist hideouts destroyed during the operation.

Man got up before cremation in Warangal

Here is a case of negligence of the doctors of Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Warangal. An agricultural labourer M. Dharmalu was coming back home. He collided with a tree and fell in the trench and became unconscious. The local residents shifted him to hospital where doctors declared him dead. He was taken to graveyard for cremation. To everybody’s surprise he got up. The persons who had come to cremate him started running away. After some time, he went to his house and asked his relatives why they are crying. He said he is alright. It was known that he fell unconscious when his brain was hit.

Chief Minister seeks plans to make Telangana power surplus

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today directed the officials to prepare a time-bound plan of action to make the state power-surplus by 2018.

Rao, who held a review meeting with senior officials, said 21,350 MW of thermal power should be produced in the state by the end of 2018. It should go up to 24,000 MW by adding hydel power, a release from his office said.

Presently, 4,300 MW of power is available against the demand of 6,000 MW, he said.

Noting that an additional 2,000 MW of power would be available by the end of the year, he said it would reduce the shortage.

Fee Reimbursement: Cabinet Sub-Committee to meet on Feb 11

The Telangana Cabinet Sub-Committee will meet on February 11 to finalise the modalities for the implementation of fee reimbursement scheme in the State.

It may be mentioned that the Telangana Cabinet on January 30 had decided to scrap the Financial Assistance for Students of Telangana (FAST) and continue with the old fee reimbursement programme. The cabinet had also decided to release the arrears of Rs 862 crore to the colleges towards fee reimbursement.

Amazon to expand operations in Telangana

A delegation from Amazon led by Global Director and Head for Real Estate and Facilities John Schoettler met Information Technology Minister K T Rama Rao at his Chambers in the D-Block Secretariat.

The expansion plans of Amazon in Hyderabad and Telangana were discussed. The following items were agreed upon between the Government of Telangana and Amazon.

The Amazon has come forward to setup a Warehouse/ Fulfillment centre in Hyderabad. Amazon will start their operations from a leased facility in about two months before the own facility is constructed.

Left parties opposed shifting of Chest Hospital

Leaders of Left parties visited Chest Hospital yesterday and opposed the proposal of Mr. KCR to shift the hospital to Nizamabad. Talking to newsmen yesterday Secretary of CPI Mr. Ch. Venkat Reddy and Secretary of CPI-M Mr. T. Verabhadram told that vastu is a personal problem of Mr. KCR. In the country and in Telangana secularism is practiced. Dismantling grand buildings taking into consideration vastu are incomprehensible. The left parties will not support Mr. KCR in this matter. He has to avoid such proposals otherwise left parties will start massive agitation.
