Tension escalates between the White House and Netanyahu

Tension between the White House and Benjamin Netanyahu escalated Wednesday as top administration officials condemned the Israeli prime minister’s plan to address Congress next week and Netanyahu accused six world powers, including the US, of “giving up on their commitment” to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

The unusually public spat marked one of the lowest points in a relationship that has long bonded the two countries, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

Kejriwal meets Rajnath, seeks better security for Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and sought his intervention in ensuring visible improvement in the law and order situation in the city, saying it has deteriorated rapidly.

Delhi government announces Rs.1 crore for CRPF trooper

The Delhi government Thursday announced Rs.1 crore as compensation to the family of a CRPF trooper killed by Maoists in Bihar’s Gaya district Tuesday.

Delhi resident Narottam Das lost his life in a land mine blast which also injured eight others at Domaria, around 120 km from Patna.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia attended the cremation of the trooper at his village in Najafgarh in north Delhi Thursday.

Pakistan army chief warns India ahead of talks

Days before the visit of Indian Foreign Secretary S.Jaishankar, Pakistan Army Chief Gen.Raheel Sharif Thursday warned India of a “befitting response” to any provocation along the Line of Control (LoC).

“Let there be no doubt that any provocation along LoC and Working Boundary would meet a befitting response,” he said .

Prosecution evidence closed in 2G money laundering case

A special court Thursday concluded recording statements of prosecution witnesses in the money laundering case related to 2G spectrum allocation case against former telecom minister A. Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others.

Central Bureau of Investigation Special Judge O. P. Saini recorded the statement of Enforcement Directorate Deputy Director Rajeshwar Singh, testifying as a prosecution witness in the case.

Special Public Prosecutor N.K. Matta told the court that ED does not wish to examine further witnesses in the case.

India to have superior earth observation satellites: ISRO chief

India will soon have satellites with superior earth observation capability, said space agency chief A.S.Kiran Kumar here Thursday.

“The future of earth observation relies on three factors – continuity and improvement of the operational constellation of satellites, sustained observation of all climate variables and global co-operation for comparing observation data,” the Indian Space Research Organisation chairman said while speaking at the International Conference on Climate Change and Disaster Management here at Kovalam.

Debate on Article 370 ploy to change Kashmir discourse: Malik

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik Thursday termed the debate on the constitution’s Article 370, giving a special status to the state, a ploy to change the discourse while terming the 2014 assembly elections as “psychologically rigged”.

“For last three-four years, debate on Article 370 is raked up deliberately to change the Kashmir discourse of independence from India to centre-state relations,” he said at a press conference here.

Ebola cases rise again in Sierra Leone

The chief executive of Sierra Leone’s National Ebola Response Centre has expressed his dismay at the rising number of Ebola cases in the country in the past couple of days.

Addressing the press Wednesday, Pallo Conteh noted that for the past days the rate of infection has risen with the country “recording double digits — 16, 15 and 14 for three consecutive days this week”.

This increase is coming at a time when the country had reached its lowest case numbers of two, four and five in the preceding week.

Court refuses to stay proceedings in Uber rape case

A court Thursday refused to stay proceedings in the case of the rape of a woman executive by an Uber cab driver and heard final arguments in the matter.

Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja went ahead with the proceedings saying that any adjournment would be granted only if there is an order from the Delhi High Court, which is likely to pronounce its verdict on March 4 on accused cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav’s plea for recall of prosecution witnesses.

Meanwhile, Yadav’s counsel began his final arguments in the matter.

Injustice to Pradesh in railway budget: Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu Thursday expressed his disappointment over the railway budget for 2015-16, saying injustice was done to the state in sanctioning new railway lines.

He told reporters here Thursday night that he had been fighting for many years to get justice to the state in the railway budget but it did not yield desired results.

Defence co-production pact backs Modi’s vision: US

The US Thursday described the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) agreement with India for co-development and co-production of defence equipment as a “commitment to our shared future” in bilateral ties.

Senior Pentagon official Frank Kendall, during a talk here, said the DTTI would strengthen bilateral military-to-military ties, re-energize defense industrial partnerships and expand regional cooperation.

Former Haryana CM Hukum Singh dead

Former Haryana chief minister Master Hukum Singh died in a private hospital here Thursday after a short illness, said an official spokesman. He was 89.

According to a Haryana government spokesman, Singh passed around 6 p.m. at the Medicity Medanta hospital here.

Earlier, in the day, state minister O.P. Dhankhar visited the hospital to enquire about the health of the former chief minister, and was told he was fine and had been shifted from the ICU to a general ward.

AAP protests land grab in Ghaziabad

The AAP Thursday threatened to launch public protests if no action was taken by March 2 against people it accused of grabbing public land.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has asked authorities to free a water body on government land from the clutches of a land grabber at Biharipur near the National Highway 24.

An AAP delegation submitted a memorandum to this effect to the municipal commissioner. It said the land grabber was carving out plots of land in the area and selling them to people illegally.

Akhtar wins legal battle against PCB

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar today reportedly won a long running legal battle against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the recovery of seven million rupees which were deducted from his earnings as penalty imposed on him by an appellate tribunal for indiscipline.

In October 2007 when Nasim Ashraf was Chairman of the PCB, a disciplinary committee had banned Akhtar for 13 matches and fined him 3.4 million rupees for hitting teammate, Muhammad Asif with a bat before the World T20 Cup in South Africa.

Christian of Dalit origin will be Dalit if he embraces Hinduism

The Supreme Court Thursday said that a Dalit whose parents or grandparents embraced Christianity will get the benefits of reservation meant for Scheduled Caste if he converts to Hinduism.

“… we are inclined to hold that the appellant (K.P. Manu) after reconversion had come within the fold of the community and thereby became a member of the Scheduled Caste,” a bench of Justice Dipak Mishra and Justice V. Gopala Gowda said.

“Had the community expelled him, the matter would have been different. The acceptance is in continuum,” the bench said.

BJP hails rail budget, Congress and Sena flay it

The BJP Thursday hailed Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu’s budget for 2015-16 calling it “reformist” and “revolutionary” while the Congress termed it “disappointing” and asked how the resources for the promised reforms will be raised. The Shiv Sena too was critical.

Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told reporters: “This is the first time a reformist budget has been brought for railways.

“Latest technology will be used in railways to upgrade it and make it safe. The reforms in railways will also generate more employment and boost the Make in India programme,” he said.

Andhra Pradesh disappointed over railway budget

Andhra Pradesh Thursday expressed its disappointment over the railway budget, saying no new project was sanctioned for the state.

Deputy Chief Minister K. E. Krishna Murthy said injustice had been done to the state as neither it was neither sanctioned any new project nor was allocated funds to complete the pending projects.

He said the new state expected a better deal in the light of commitments made to the state in Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act but was not receiving funds from the central government to the expected level.

Helicopter crash north of Iran’s capital, Tehran kills 3

An Iranian news agency says a helicopter belonging to the country’s air force has crashed north of Tehran, killing all three crew members on board.

The report today by the semi-official Fars news agency quotes a district governor, Ezzatollah Khammohammadi, as saying that rescue teams have rushed to the crash site in the mountains north of the Iranian capital.

He says the cause of the crash is not immediately known and that an investigation is underway.

Mobile Phone charging facilities in general coaches

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu has said that Indian Railways’ Delhi Division is taking up a project for introducing on-board entertainment on select Shatabdi trains on license fee basis. He said, depending on the response, the facility will be extended on all Shatabdi trains.
Presenting the Railway Budget 2015-16 in Parliament today Prabhu said, Mobile phone charging facilities would be provided in general class coaches and the number of charging facilities would be increased in sleeper class coaches. (NSS)

SC directs Gujarat Police to share details of documents with Teesta Setalvad

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Gujarat Police to provide social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband a list of documents needed from them in the ongoing probe in the misappropriation of public funds case, while has been filed against them.

According to reports, the apex court told the Gujarat Police that the accused are also entitled to have the list, which has already made available to the Supreme Court.

35 killed in airstrikes, violence in Iraq

At least 35 people were killed and 44 others wounded in airstrikes against positions of the Islamic State (IS) militants and violent attacks across Iraq Thursday, security sources said.

The deadliest casualties occurred in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, when warplanes of the US-led anti-IS coalition struck their positions in and near the town of al-Qaim, some 330 km northwest of the capital Baghdad. At least 15 militants and seven civilians were killed, a provincial security source told Xinhua news agency on condition of anonymity.
