Jagadish files defamation case against Ponnam

Sticking to his word, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy today filed a defamation case against senior Congress leader and former MP Ponnam Prabhakar for his alleged remarks.

Hotel workers body fished out from nala

The Musheerabad police on Thursday fished out the body of a 52-year-old man from a nala near City Mall.

14-year-old boy found dead in mysterious circumstances

A 14-year-old boy was found hanging to a tree under mysterious circumstances in Bhavani Nagar police limits on Thursday morning.

The victim, Mirza Ahmed Ali Baig, a 9th class student, went out of his house in Raja Nagar on Wednesday evening. However, he did not return home and his body was found hanging to a tree in Mohammed Nagar at about 8 AM on Thursday. Bhavani Nagar police began investigation after registering a case of suspicious death under Section 174 of IPC. (INN)

Two killed in train accidents in different incidents

A 35-year-old man died on the spot after he was hit by a train between Begumpet and Necklace Road stations on Thursday morning.

The Nampally Railway Police later identified the deceased as Md Ahmed, an auto-driver of Borabanda near Habeeb Fatima Nagar.

In another case, Rajesh Bung, 42, died on the spot after he was hit by a train between Malakpet and Dabeerpura stations on Thursday. He was a businessman and resident of Happy Homes Apartments in Madannapet, according to Kachiguda Railway Police. (INN)

Five bombs explode in Cairo; one killed, 6 injured

At least one person was killed and six others injured when five bombs hit a police station and two other places here while Egyptian police defused two bombs planted near the presidential palace.

A bomb exploded outside a police station in Waraq district in Giza, injuring six including four policemen.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health said in a statement that a person was killed in another bomb explosion that took place outside a restaurant in the residential district of Imbaba.

Separate mining policy to be framed in Uttarakhand: Rawat

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Thursday said a separate policy will be framed in the state to ensure that mining is done along riverbeds in a legally sanctioned manner so that the rivers and population living close to them are protected and the sector becomes an effective tool for revenue generation.

Rajasthan’s ex-minister Kataria discharged in Sohrabuddin case

A special CBI court on Thursday discharged senior BJP leader and Rajasthan’s former home minister Gulabchand Kataria and marble trader Vimal Patni from the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter killing cases, citing “insufficient” evidence.

“There is no sufficient ground to proceed against the accused,” special CBI judge MB Gosavi said as he discharged the two from the case.

Kataria is the second top politician after BJP president Amit Shah who had been charge-sheeted in the two cases but will not stand trial after relief from the court.

Ayodhya issue: Ansari to involve prominent Muslim leaders Maulana Rabe Hasani and Asaduddin

In his attempt to find an out-of- court resolution to Ayodhya dispute, the main litigant in Babri Masjid case Hashim Ansari today said he will involve prominent members of the minority community for a peaceful conclusion to the matter.

Ansari recently met Akhara Parishad president Mahant Gyan Das to discuss a new proposal for resolution of Ayodhya dispute and they plan to put it before the Supreme Court.

Javadekar calls Railway Budget ‘people-oriented’

Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday said that the Railway Budget was a ‘revolutionary and people-centric budget’.

He said that steps initiated in this budget would not only improve safety, security and facilities for passengers but also enhance speed of travel on the Indian Railways.

Over 76 crore Aadhaar numbers generated till mid-February

As many as 76.83 crore Aadhaar numbers have been generated as on February 15 and about Rs 5,512.18 crore has been spent until January this year on the project, government said on Thursday.

“A total of 76.83 crore Aadhaars have been generated as on February 15, 2015, out of a total population of 121.01 crore (Census 2011),” Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Pakistan court declares Tahir-ul-Qadri, sons “proclaimed offenders”

Canada-based cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri, who spearheaded an agitation against the Nawaz Sharif government, was on Thursday declared a “proclaimed offender” along with his two sons by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court for failing to appear in a case of arson and vandalism here.

The anti-terrorism court of Lahore also issued non- bailable warrants against 64-year-old Qadri, his sons and two other leaders of the Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) party.

The court gave the verdict in a case against PAT chief on charges of arson and vandalism during their protests in Lahore last year.

All issues to be discussed with India: Pakistan

Pakistan said Thursday it will discuss all disputes with Indian Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar when he visits the country between March 3 and 4.

“Kashmir, Siachin, Sir Creek and other issues would be discussed with the Indian foreign secretary,” said foreign office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam at the weekly media briefing, Dawn reported.

“We welcome this Indian initiative,” she added.

The Shiv Sena Thursday targeted the BJP-led NDA government, which it is part of, with a sharp criticism of the railway budget for 2015-16, saying it “completely ignored the aspirations and expectations of the people of Maharashtra”.

IS executor ‘Jihadi John’ identified

The masked Islamic State (IS) militant known as “Jihadi John,” who has appeared in several execution videos, has been identified as Briton Mohammed Emwazi of London, according to people familiar with the matter.

Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born Briton in his mid-20s from west London, was previously known to British security services, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

“I have no doubt that Emwazi is Jihadi John,” said one of his close friends who identified him in an interview with The Washington Post. “He was like a brother to me, I am sure it is him.”

Swine flu deaths crosses 250 mark in Rajasthan

The swine flu epidemic continued to rage in Rajasthan with six more deaths reported Thursday taking the total death toll over the 250 mark since the start of this year, an official said.

“Six more deaths were reported across the state on Thursday. Total deaths reported till Thursday touched 251 from Jan 1 in the state,” a medical and health department official told IANS.

Total positive cases as of Thursday evening were 5,262, out of which 2,039 are from Jaipur alone, the official said.

Jaipur also accounted for the maximum deaths at 51 followed by Ajmer at 29 and Jodhpur at 28.

NHRC notice to Delhi Police chief over placement agencies

Apex human rights panel, the NHRC has sought a report from Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi over steps taken to keep a check on the mushrooming placement agencies which are the “hubs and transit point for human trafficking”.

Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that surging demand for domestic help in Delhi is encouraging human trafficking by unregulated placement agencies, the NHRC said that “hundreds of agencies are reportedly involved in the business of selling domestic workers”.

Mamata asks opposition to join her in meeting Modi

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday called upon the opposition to accompany her in meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press the demand for a debt-waiver for the cash-strapped state.

Speaking on the governor’s address in the state assembly, Banerjee said she would be “happy” if the opposition parties joined her.

SC reserves verdict on plea against IT act provisions

The Supreme Court Thursday reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of section 66A of the Information Technology Act and other provisions of cyber law on the grounds of their misuse/abuse by the authorities.

A bench of Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman reserved its verdict after the central government told the court that a statutory provision could not be quashed just on the grounds of its misuse or abuse.

Ban on Togadia’s entry in Odisha’s Kandhamal

Authorities in Odisha’s Kandhamal district Thursday banned the proposed entry of Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief Pravin Togadia on apprehensions that it might disturb peace in the area.

“He (Togadia) will not be allowed to enter the district. The ban is valid for next seven days,” Kandhamal’s Superintendent of Police Kanwar Vishal Singh told IANS.

Togadia is scheduled to address a gathering of VHP supporters at Phulbani, the district headquarters of Kandhamal Saturday. Singh said the organisers have been however given permission to hold the gathering but without Togadia.

Separatists find bodies of 30 Ukrainian soldiers

Pro-Russian separatists have found at least 30 corpses of Ukrainian soldiers under the rubble of Donetsk airport, which was taken by the rebels last month after bloody fighting, according to the separatists’ DAN news agency.

“Forces of the ministry of emergency situations, militiamen and volunteers went to collect debris from the Donetsk airport, where they found at least 30 dead Ukrainian soldiers,” said a statement from the ministry of defence of the self-proclaimed People’s Republic of Donetsk, DAN reported.
