Madrasa Students Involved in Benazir Killing: Police

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has been told that students of an Islamic seminary were involved in the 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

But the Darul Uloom Haqqania in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province denied any connection with the suspects, Dawn online reported.

The hearing in the Benazir murder case took place at a special court set up inside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Musharraf asks apex court to dismiss Pakistan govt

Pakistan’s former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has asked the Supreme Court to dismiss the federal government, saying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is incapable of running the affairs of the country.

“The Supreme Court of Pakistan should send this government home following the doctrine of necessity as the sitting premier Nawaz Sharif is not capable of running the affairs of this country,” Musharraf told Samaa TV during a talk show.

The embattled 71-year-old military leader, said that Sharif was living under the false impression that Pakistan was thriving under his leadership.

Make law to ‘break hands and legs of rapists’, demands MP

A Rajya Sabha MP on Friday demanded that Parliament should enact a law to “break the hands and legs of rapists” as he expressed concern over the growing number of rapes and incidents of women atrocities.

Expressing concern over the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Lonavala, Ramdas Athawale (RPI-A) expressed anguish over rapes of girls aged 3-7 years and said a law should be made under which the hands and legs of perpetrators of such crimes should be broken.

Shopping vouchers can help pregnant women quit smoking

Financial incentives, such as shopping vouchers, could help one in five women quit smoking during pregnancy, according to a new UK research.

The study, led by researchers at the University of Cambridge and King’s College London, found that only a small number of women ‘gamed’ the system to receive the incentives while continuing to smoke.

Researchers carried out a study of women attending antenatal clinics at a hospital in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, an area of high deprivation and 239 pregnant women enrolled into the financial incentives scheme.

The State government on Thursday setting aside earlier orders has issued revised orders on Deepak scheme.

Soon women belonging to poorer sections will get Deepam gas connections very, and those who are waiting for domestic gas connections under the Deepam scheme will get refills.

District collectors will select the beneficiaries in their respective locations for sanction of LPG connections. Women belonging to SCs, STs, minorities, etc., who is in need of a domestic connection, will be eligible for the same under the scheme.

Kunal Kohli denies teaming up with Saif Ali Khan for new film

Filmmaker Kunal Kohli has rubbished reports that he is collaborating with Saif Ali Khan again post ‘Hum Tum’ for his upcoming project.

There were reports that Kohli had signed the ‘Happy Ending’ actor for his new production.

World’s first 3D-printed jet engine created

Australian engineers have recently created the world’s first jet engines with the help of 3D-printer.

The work of engineers and researchers at Amaero Engineering and Monash University, located on the outskirts of Melbourne, could lead to cheaper, lighter and more fuel efficient engines, the Independent reported.

The engines were created using a high-powered laser, fusing powdered nickel, titanium or aluminium into the shapes of objects layer by layer. (ANI)

Ukraine withdrawing ‘heavy weapons’ from front line in keeping with Minsk deal

Ukraine has reportedly said that its army is beginning the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the front line in east Ukraine, in keeping with the Minsk truce deal.

The Ukrainian defence ministry dubbed the withdrawal of 100mm calibre artillery as the “first step” and added that it will be monitored by foreign observers, reported the BBC.

Pro-Russian rebels had earlier said that they had started withdrawing heavy weapons but the claim was not verified by monitors.

Special juvenile police units to be set up under JJ Act

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has, in a written reply to parliament, informed that the government proposes to set up special juvenile police units in every district and city under Section 63(3) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.

The purpose of setting up these units is to coordinate and to upgrade police treatment of the juveniles and the children.

American atheist Blogger hack to death in Dhaka

An unidentified attackers have hacked to death a prominent Bangladeshi-American blogger known for speaking out against religious fundamentalism.

Avijit Roy, Bangladesh-born US citizen brought to death in the streets of Bangladesh’s capital when he and his wife Rafida Ahmed were returning from a book fair at Dhaka University. Rafida was seriously injured in the attack.

It was not known who was behind the attack, but Roy’s family and friends say he was a prominent voice against religious extremists and has faced threats in the past.

A former Turkish beauty queen could face imprisonment for two years over an “insulting” Instagram post.

Prosecutors allege that Merve Buyuksarac, who won Miss Turkey in 2006, insulted the Turkish president in a post from last summer.

While the post has since been deleted, Hurriyet Daily News describes it as a satirical text titled The Master’s Poem, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Last month, the former beauty queen was reportedly questioned by police about the poem critical of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Activists condemn rape of Sikkim girl in Delhi

Condemning the alleged rape of a 25-year-old girl from Sikkim by a doctor in the national capital as ‘extremely disturbing’, activist Binalakshmi Nepram on Friday warned of a strong protest if an attempt is made to hush up the matter.

“I came to know that in Hauz Khas, a doctor did this to a Sikkim girl. She is currently admitted in the AIIMS and police is taking her statement. We are extremely disturbed with this news and we are with the victim as first line of support. If there is any attempt to hush up the matter then we activists will come out,” Nepram told ANI.

US intelligence chief says cyberattacks pose biggest threat to nation

James R. Clapper, Director of US National Intelligence, says that one of the biggest threat that US currently faces is that of cyberattacks carried out by miscreants aiming to breach government and private computer networks.

According to the Washington Times, Clapper said in prepared remarks to the Senate Armed Services Committee : “Cyber threats to US national and economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication and severity of impact; [and] the ranges of cyber threat actors, methods of attack, targeted systems and victims are also expanding.”

Iran test fires new weapon in naval drill

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says it has test fired a “new strategic weapon” in the final day of large-scale naval and air defence drills.

Adm Ali Fadavi, the guard’s naval chief, told state TV today that the new weapon would play a “decisive” role in naval wars. He did not elaborate.

The TV showed a short video on launching missiles from under water into the sky.

The Guard launched the drills yesterday near the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes. In one exercise, Iranian forces fired at a replica of a US aircraft carrier.

I was in two minds about doing ‘Badlapur’: Huma Qureshi

Huma Qureshi started her Bollywood journey by starring in edgy, unconventional films but even she had doubts about signing Sriram Raghavan’s ‘Badlapur’ as the actress felt it was “too dark” and “hard-hitting”.

“The only reason I said yes was because of the team and how everybody believed in it. I was the third actor to join the movie and I was really scared. We had a big discussion about should I, shouldn’t I or will it be too much or too dark. I have been a part of edgy films earlier but ‘Badlapur’ was quite hard-hitting,” Huma told PTI in an interview.
