Russia pushes for setting up BRICS parliamentary forum

Pushed increasingly into a corner by western sanctions over Ukraine, Russia Friday stressed on the relevance of the Russia-India-China troika in “ensuring international and regional stability and security” and setting up a BRICS inter-parliamentary forum.

Sergey Naryshkin, speaker of the Russian parliament, said the Russia-India-China (RIC) grouping “reinstates once again the impossibility of creating a unipolar world”, referring to the US which has been leading the sanctions against Russia over the unrest in eastern Ukraine.

Imran Khan hails Kangana Ranaut

Actor Imran Khan is having a “positive experience” filming “Katti Batti”, thanks to his “wonderful co-star” Kangana Ranaut and “great director” Nikhil Advani.

“I am having so much fun on this film (‘Katti Batti’) because I am working with Kangana (Ranaut) for the first time and she is just so wonderful to work with,” Imran said here Thursday at Filmfare Glamour & Style Awards red carpet.

“Besides, I am working for the first time with Nikhil Advani as well and he is a great director. I am having a very positive experience on this film,” he added.

Srinivasan apologises to Supreme Court

Sidelined president N. Srinivasan Friday tendered an unconditional apology for presiding over the Feb 8 Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Working Committee meeting in breach of a court order.

Srinivasan told the court that it was due to a bonafide misunderstanding of the court’s order that we went ahead to chair the meet.

“I am offering an unqualified apology. We looked at the letter of the order and not the spirit,” the court was told.

‘More than 500 died of Malaria, over 100 of dengue in 2014’

More than 500 people died of Malaria while over 100 succumbed to dengue last year, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda in his reply said that 535 people had died of Malaria in 2014, while 126 deaths were reported due to dengue.

292 death were reported due to Japanese Encephalitis and 11 of Kala-azar during the same year, he added.

Srinivasan apologises to SC for attending BCCI meeting

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India chief N Srinivasan on Friday apologised to the Supreme Court for attending the body’s working committee meeting despite orders to the contrary.

According to reports, Srinivasan has also assured the apex court that he will not chair the upcoming annual general meeting of the BCCI.

Meanwhile, Cricket Association of Bihar secretary and main petitioner in the Indian Premier League spot-fixing case, Aditya Verma said that N Srinivasan has been barred from participating in any affairs of the BCCI.

Essar yacht episode: Gadkari denies conflict of interest

Union Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday denied a conflict of interest insofar as his and his family’s trip to France about two years ago.

Addressing a press conference, Gadkari said of his visit to Nice in France, ” I or members of my family have never traveled on Essar’s money. I went to their resort with my own money.”

He further stated that when he undertook the trip, he went in his personal capacity and was not a minister or member of parliament or an office bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Earlier in the day, the PDP chief met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and invited him for his swearing-in ceremony as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on March 1.

Two more deaths, 27 new swine flu cases in Telangana

Two more deaths and 27 new cases of swine flu have been reported in Telangana, where the number of deaths due to the virus stands at 56 as on date.

“In the current year, from January 1 till February 26, 4,483 samples have been tested, out of which 1,412 found to be positive. The number of deaths because of other complications and swine flu as on date are 56,” a bulletin on swine flu issued by the state government said here today.

It said 102 samples were tested yesterday and 27 have been found positive for the virus.

No dramatic results expected from FS’ Pak visit: India

India is not expecting any dramatic results from Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar’s visit to Pakistan on Tuesday, senior officials said today emphasising that his visit was a “SAARC yatra and not a Pak yatra”.

Jaishankar will be travelling to Bhutan on Sunday and go to Bangladesh next day before flying off from Dhaka to Islamabad on March three, as part of India’s initiative to reach out to SAARC countries.

More than 25,000 Egyptians flee Libya after beheadings

More than 25,000 Egyptians have returned from neighbouring Libya since the Islamic State group posted a video earlier this month of the beheadings of Christian compatriots, the foreign ministry said today.

Egypt carried out air strikes against jihadist targets in Libya on February 16 in retaliation for the executions of the 21 Copts and urged its large expatriate workforce to head home for their own safety.

US intelligence chief says Turkey does not place ‘high priority’ on battling IS

Turkey does not place a high priority on battling the Islamic State (IS) and consequently, foreign fighters are able to travel through the country to enter Syria, a U.S. intelligence chief said.

On being asked if Turkey would play a more active role in the battle to take on the IS, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper replied in the negative and said that he believed that Turkey had “other priorities and other interests,” reported News24.

NRI brother of martyr pays homage to him at Nagi War Memorial

His elder brother, Gulab Kanal, and his family, who are settled in the United States since 1960, recently came to know of the War Memorial at Nagi and visited it and the Karanpur cemetery on February 15 to pay homage to the brave officer.
