Omar Abdullah links Barack Obama’s comment on poverty in India to Manmohan Singh

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday saw praise for Manmohan Singh in US President Barack Obama’s comments on poverty alleviation in India.

“Obama – ‘Millions have been lifted out of poverty in recent years’. Dr Manmohan Singh is right – history will judge him more kindly,” Omar wrote on microblogging site twitter.com soon after the US President’s address at the Siri Fort Auditorium in the Union capital.

Shots hit UAE passenger plane in Baghdad

A United Arab Emirates (UAE) passenger plane was hit by small arms fire while landing at Baghdad airport, an airport source told Xinhua news agency Tuesday.

On Monday night, a plane of budget airliner Flydubai was hit by bullets from the al-Radhwaniya area, just south of the airport, which caused damage to the aircraft, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source could not give further details, saying that an official statement would be released soon by the Iraqi Authority of Aviation.

US President Barack Obama Tuesday said he was happy to see all the “incredible” women in the Indian armed forces during the Republic Day parade, which he said was a sign of great progress of the country.

In a town hall meeting-style speech at the Siri Fort Auditorium here, his last engagement before he flew off to Saudi Arabia, the US president spoke extensively on the important role of women in building society and also stressed that it is necessary to ensure security to every woman.

A pharmaceutical go down was gutted by fire in an incident occurred at Chaitanyapuri. According to sources go down of Suresh Pharmaceuticals caught fire during the wee hours on Monday due to short circuit. Medicines and other items worth Rs/- 1 Cr. were destroyed by the fire.

Iran wants ‘more active’ EU role in n-talks

The European Union (EU) can play a more active role in the negotiations between Iran and the world powers over its nuclear issue, Iran foreign minister.

In a meeting with his Portugese counterpart Rui Machete in Tehran Monday, Mohammad-Javad Zarif hailed what he termed as “positive” the European countries’ current approach to oppose the imposition of any new sanctions against Tehran and trying out diplomacy, Xinhua news agency reported citing Press TV.

12 injured as tempo turns turtle

Around twelve people received minor injuries when a tempo they were travelling in turned turtle in Kashmere Gate area of North Delhi today.

According to police, the driver allegedly lost control while taking a turn in front of the Kashmere Gate bus stand.

The incident took place around 8 PM.

Police have registered a case of negligence against the tempo driver who was arrested from the accident spot.

Few passers-by made a call to the police control room and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Ranbaxy forfeits 180 days exclusivity for stomach drugs

Drug major Ranbaxy on Tuesday said that the US health regulator has “determined” that the Indian drug manufacturer has forfeited its 180 days exclusivity for stomach and esophagus problems treatment tablets.

“We have now received a communication from US FDA that they have determined that Ranbaxy has forfeited its 180 days exclusivity for esomeprazole magnesium delayed-release capsules,” the company said in a BSE filing.

Esomeprazole is used for treatment of certain stomach and esophagus problems such as acid reflux and ulcers.

Maruti Suzuki Q3 net profit rises 18% at Rs 802 crore

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India on Tuesday reported 17.8 percent increase in net profit at Rs 802.2 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, 2014.

The company had posted a net profit of Rs 681.15 crore in the same period last fiscal, Maruti Suzuki India said in a statement.

“Higher volumes, material cost reduction initiatives and favourable foreign exchange contributed to the bottomline during the quarter,” the company said in a statement.

Gold Futures Fall Rs 264 on Weak Global Cues, Profit-Booking

Gold prices fell sharply by Rs 264 to Rs 27,600 per tens in futures trade today amid a weak trend overseas and profit-booking by speculators.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in February fell by Rs 264, or 0.95 per cent, to Rs 27,600 per 10 grams in a business turnover of 497 lots.

Likewise, the metal for delivery in far-month April was down by Rs 237, or 0.85 per cent, to Rs 27,764 per 10 grams in 42 lots.

Sensex touches new high; capital goods stocks surge

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Tuesday scaled a new peak and was trading at 99.95 points or 0.34 percent up.

The index touched a high of 29,456.63 points, surpassing its previous high of 29,408.73 points it touched Jan 23.

Good buying was observed in capital goods, auto and banking, while selling pressure was seen in IT, metal and technology, media and entertainment (TECK) sectors.

Rupee Trades 61.42 Vs USD in Late Morning Deals

The rupee were quoting at 61.42 against the US currency in late morning deals today amid volatile trading on the back of higher dollar overseas.

Earlier, the rupee resumed lower at 61.50 per dollar as against last Friday’s close of 61.42 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market.

It declined further at 61.51 on month-end dollar demand by importers, before recovering at Rs 61.39 on bouts of dollar selling by banks and exporters and was quoting at last Friday’s same level of Rs 61.42 at 1100 hrs.

It hovered in the range of 61.51-61.39 per dollar during the morning trade.

According to The Guardian, the targets of the investigation were not notified until two and a half years after secret search warrants were issued and served by the FBI, legal representatives for WikiLeaks said in a press conference on Monday.
