Obama cautions against religious divide

President Barack Obama today wound up his three-day trip here with a strong pitch for religious tolerance, cautioning that India will succeed so long as it was not “splintered along the lines of religious faith”.

Delivering a powerful message against religious extremism shortly before he left for Saudi Arabia, he said, “every person has a right to practice the faith that they choose and to practice no faith at all, and to do so free of persecution, fear or discrimination”.

Modi to address four rallies in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address four rallies in the national capital between Jan 31 and Feb 4 – ahead of the Feb 7 assembly election, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said Tuesday.

The first rally will take place Jan 31 at the CBD Ground in east Delhi’s Shahdara area, while the second will be held Feb 1 in Dwarka.

The last two rallies are scheduled to take place Feb 3 at Rohini’s Japanese Park and and Feb 4 in Ambedkar Nagar’s Virat Cinema ground.

Two militants killed in encounter in J-K

Two militants were killed on Tuesday in an encounter by security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A gun battle broke out between the militants and security forces after the latter launched a search operation in Mindora village of Tral.

The 32-metre long and four-metre wide cricket bat, created by a leading pay TVnetwork was displayed yesterday here at the ICC Academy.

As tall as an eight to 10-storey building, the bat weighs a mammoth 950 kilogrammes and is nearly 32 times longer than a standard cricket bat.

Obama leading high-powered delegation to Saudi Arabia

U.S. President Barack Obama will be leading a high profile bipartisan delegation to Saudi Arabia to offer condolences for the recent death of King Abdullah and pay respects to his successor King Salman.

Samsung to expand Noida facility, invests Rs 517 crore

Tech giant Samsung today said it has invested Rs 517 crore on manufacturing facility at Noida to ramp up capacity and strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest growing smartphone markets.

Samsung India Electronics, which has been present in India for 20 years, has three research labs and two manufacturing plants here with a total of 45,000 employees.

“Samsung has invested Rs 517 crore for the expansion of the Noida plant under the UP Mega Policy, reaffirming Samsung’s commitment and contribution towards India’s manufacturing sector,” it said in a statement.

Sensex, Nifty hit new peaks as markets rise for 8th straight day

Extending their winning run to the eighth straight session, the benchmark Sensex today jumped 292.20 points to end at new closing high of 29,571.04 and Nifty surpassed the 8,900-mark for the first time on optimism over Indo-US nuclear deal amid sustained foreign fund inflows.

The BSE Sensex resumed higher at 29,451.65 and then touched all-time high of 29,618.59, before settling at fresh closing peak of 29,571.04 -gain of 292.2 points or 1%.

In eight successive sessions, the Sensex has zoomed by 2,224.22 points or 8%. In five of those days, it has hit new highs.

Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile, Lobsang Sangay, has described U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to India on Republic Day as a celebration of democracies.

“America being the oldest democracy and India also being largest democracy, it is celebrations of democracies that we are going to witness today and it is also fitting because today is the day when India promulgated its constitution,” Sangay said on Monday.

“It is demonstration or reflection of how close America and India are going to be and as Tibetans, we welcome and celebrate it,” added Sangay.

IBM to lay off more than 100,000 workers globally

IBM is planning to slash more than 100,000 workers from across the globe as a cost-cutting measure.

According to Mirror, the US company, which employs around 20,000 people in the UK, confirmed it was preparing for “workforce rebalancing” that would lead to the loss of “several thousand” roles.

However, the company said that reports claiming that the company was preparing to cut 111,000 workers – more than a quarter of its 430,000 workers – were “ridiculous” and “baseless”.

The computer giant refused to divulge any more details on the same.

Ferrari has revealed that the car they and Sebastian Vettel hope would revive the team’s Formula One fortunes this season would be called the SF15-T.

Ferrari, which is the sport’s most successful and oldest team, did not manage to win a race last year, their first such blank since 1993, and finished fourth.

Ferrari explained on their website that the designation of their new car stood for Scuderia Ferrari, followed by the year and a T for turbo, Stuff.co.nz reported.

Ferrari’s car that led to a disappointed campaign last season was known as the F14T.

Microsoft reports 8pc revenue gain in Q2 2015

Microsoft has released its second quarter results from fiscal year 2015, revealing an increase in the revenue by 8 percent from the same quarter last year, as it made 5.6 billion dollars in net income on 26.5 billion dollars in revenue.

However, the company’s net income dropped 10 percent.

According to the Verge, Microsoft does note that it has incurred a further “243 million dollars of integration and restructuring expenses” related to the Nokia phone business purchase, which explains part of the drop.
