Delhi Congress leader SC Vats joins BJP

Former Delhi legislator S.C. Vats of the Congress Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying he was unhappy with the policies of his party.

Vats expressed his confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was working in the right direction to develop the country.

“There has been a change in the policies of the Congress in the last few years. Earlier, it used to talk about the common man but it changed its economic policies which resulted in inflation,” Vats said.

IIT Director attributes decision to quit to “unforseen situation”

IIT Director R Shevgaonkar, whose resignation last week had triggered a controversy, on Wednesday attributed his decision to quit to some “unforeseen situations”.

“Towards the end of the year, however, some unforeseen situations developed and I had to decide to step down from my position. Nevertheless, this is a small transient in the long illustrious history of IIT Delhi.

“IIT Delhi is on constant rising path and I am sure the New Year will bring many unprecedented achievements to the institute,” Shevgaonkar said in his farewell mail sent to the faculty, staff and students.

Security beefed up in Hampi after Bengaluru blast

Security has been stepped up in the world heritage site of Hampi and other sensitive areas in the district in view of the blast in Bengaluru.

Tungabhadra Dam and Ballari Thermal Power Station and other high population density areas had also come under the security blanket, police said.

As per instructions from the office of the Director General and also in view of New Year celebrations, police are also checking vehicles and have deployed sniffer dog teams and metal detectors.

Man posts Karnataka minister’s morphed image on social site

A man allegedly posted a morphed image of Karnataka Health Minister U T Khader on a movie poster on a popular social networking site here, police said on Wednesday.

The poster of ‘PK’ movie bearing the morphed image of the minister was circulated on WhatsApp by the accused Naresh Gatty along with some adverse comments and a Pakistani flag in the picture, police said.

The creator of the group, Hameed Hasan, filed a complaint with the Ullal police station saying that Gatty’s post had hurt the sentiments of the local community, police said.

Hyderabad police mobile app for women’s safety

Hyderabad police will launch a new mobile application from new year, which will ensure women’s safety during travel, and enable people to access help in emergencies by pressing SOS button.

‘Hawk eye’ will also empower people to become citizen police by reporting crimes and traffic violations. They can also report violations by police personnel, make suggestions for improved policing and report good work done by police.

Malaika hates debates on item songs

Actress Malaika Arora Khan, who will be seen doing a special song in “Dolly Ki Doli”, says she hates the debates on item numbers.

Asked about her reaction on politicians making remarks against item numbers, she said: “I think it’s ridiculous and I hate these debates. It’s a song at the end of the day.”

“I don’t understand why there is so much fuss about it. Why can’t we look at it like entertainment. Indian films are all about song and dance,” she added.

Drones to monitor New Year celebrations in Bengaluru

Days after a blast in Bengaluru killed a woman, city police will now deploy drones with aerial cameras to man the hotpot areas which are expected to be frequented by revellers during New Year celebrations.

Drones equipped with camera will monitor from a height of 50 to 60 metres above several areas of the city including MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street.

Talking about the recent move of the police, DCP Central (Bengaluru) Sandeep Patil tweeted,”For 1st time Drone Areal Cameras being used for new yr.Remote controlled .Go upto 50 mts.”

Bengaluru blast: Sketches of suspects drawn, police

As investigators zeroed in on some terror groups, sketches of suspects have been drawn in connection with the explosion outside a restaurant here that killed a woman and injured three others.

“We have zeroed in on some (terror) groups – and have drawn sketches of some people belonging to these outfits. We are in a process of verification and confirmation – whether these sketches match the suspects who were involved in the explosion,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar told PTI.

Nawaz Sharif vows to rid Pakistan of terrorism

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that his government has taken concrete measures to address the challenge of terrorism as he vowed to rid Pakistan of terrorism.

“In our resolve to rid the country of terrorism, we will march further than any of the world powers,” Sharif said while speaking in the Senate.

He said that there is no question of lagging behind in the fight against terrorism.

Israel convicts Hamas militant for killing Jewish teens

An Israeli military tribunal Wednesday convicted Hussam Hassan Kawasme, a Hamas operative, of masterminding the abduction and murder of three Jewish teenagers in the West Bank in June.

Kawasme was arrested early July on suspicion of aiding and abetting the killers. During interrogation, he confessed to planning and financing the attack, and was indicted in September, Xinhua reported.

Demand to release Abdul Qadeer

He questioned the Govt. why he is not being released even after the completion of his period of imprisonment. He asked the Home Minister and Chief Secretary whether they have any criminal law to keep a prisoner beyond the period of his imprisonment.

Urdu University pays homage to Mr. Syed Hamid

Maulana Azad National Urdu University expressed its deep sorrow on the death of Mr. Syed Hamid, former Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He was a noted Educationist and Intellectual. In his condolence message, Prof. Mohammed Miyan, Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University said that Mr. Syed Hamid was associated with Urdu University right from its inception. D.Ed. Admissions – common counseling

For admissions into D.Ed. course for the academic year 2014-15, Govt. of A.P. and Govt. of Telangana have decided to conduct common counseling. The counseling will be held in two phases. The counseling of DIETCET for 2014 will be held in the first phase which will be on the basis of website. So far, the convener Mr. R. Surender Reddy has received a list of only 409 D.Ed. Colleges. If the list of more colleges is received by 5th January, they will be included in the counseling of first phase.

The second phase counseling will start on 2nd February 2015.

Russia says NATO responsible for Afghan security situation

Russia said Wednesday NATO continues to bear responsibility for maintaining security in Afghanistan after it withdraws troops from the country.

“Obviously, the ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) activities have failed to stabilise the situation in Afghanistan for the past 13 years,” Xinhua quoted Russian foreign ministry statement as saying.

“Multi-dimensional security threats, including religious extremism, terrorism, and drug crimes, which the mission has fought since 2001, not only continue to exist, but have a tendency to increase,” it added.

Pakistan summons Indian diplomat over firing

Pakistan Wednesday summoned India’s deputy high commissioner and lodged a protest over the killing of two Pakistani troopers along the Line of Control (LoC).

The Pakistani foreign ministry said two paramilitary personnel were injured in Indian firing along the working boundary that divides the two countries in Jammu and Kashmir. The two troopers later succumbed to their wounds, Xinhua reported.

Funds released for Minorities Finance Corporation and Urdu Academy

Special Secretary of Finance Department, Mr. K. Rama Krishna Rao issued two separate GOs releasing the grants to Minorities Finance Corporation and Urdu Academy. Finance Corporation gets Re. 1 crore and 84 lakh. Govt. had allocated Rs. 9.20 crore for it. Its first installment of Rs. 2, 16, 22, 000 was released earlier. It has to get Rs. 5, 19, 78, 000.

In the same manner, Urdu Academy was given Rs. 8.20 lakh under non-plan grant. Under this head Rs. 41 lakh were allocated out of which Rs. 26, 64, 000 were already released as the first installment. It has to get Rs. 6, 16, 000.
