Exams of Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu concluded

According Prof. S A Shukoor General Secretary, Urdu Maher, Urdu Aalim and Urdu Fazil exams of Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu were held from December 27 to 31, 2014. Students appeared at 7 centres in Hyderabad and Secunderabad and 10 centres in districts.

Prof. S A Shukoor told that results of the exams would be announced shortly.

Government withdraws excise duty concessions to auto industry

The government has withdrawn excise duty concessions to the auto industry, which were given by the previous UPA Government in the interim budget in February.

Media reports quoted finance ministry sources, as saying that excise duty for SUVs had been reduced to 24 per cent from 30 per cent, whereas for mid-sized cars, it was reduced to 20 per cent from 24 per cent.

It was slashed from 27 percent to 24 percent for the large cars.

The decision not to extend excise duty for the auto industry will make SUVs and two-wheelers more expensive from today.

Sony hack: Employees were forced to use old Blackberrys to deal with cyberattack

According to new reports, Sony employees had to resort to older technologies like the Blackberry to keep the work going and used a phone tree to relay messages when the cyberattack on Sony Pictures was launched.

The employees relayed details about the hack from one person to another via phones and had to use ancient technology to issue physical checks since they couldn’t transfer salaries through bank deposit.

Sony CEO Michael Lynton said that it took him more than 24 hours to realize the severity of the attack, reported CNN.

W.Bengal tribals express solidarity with victims of militant attack in Assam

Expressing solidarity with the plantation workers of Assam who were recently attacked by a banned militant outfit, a tribal organisation ‘ Bharat Jakat Majhi Pargana Mahal’ staged a protest demanding compensation for the victims here.

The protesters walked on the streets with sticks and weapons and blocked the roads.

Awami League counters two-day strike call of Jamaat-e-Islami

Supporters of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League poured onto the streets here on Wednesday to defy a two-day strike called by Jamaat-e-Islami party, which was protesting against the death sentence given to one of its leaders by the war crimes tribunal.

Police pickets were set up across the streets of Dhaka during the strike. However, people and supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League held marches, shouted slogans against former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and her Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for having allied with the Jamaat.

Eight women die in a week after Caesarean section in Ooty

Eight pregnant women have lost their lives in a week after undergoing Caesarean section in Ooty.

Most of the deaths occurred between December 24 and December 30.

Some of the patients, who were referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital after developing complications, also did not survive.

Relatives said most of them died of excessive bleeding post surgery.

Anandraj, husband of a victim Saraswati, said she was keeping fine till she was brought to the hospital.

LPG consumers to get cash subsidy in bank accounts from today

Consumers of LPG (cooking gas) across the country will get cash subsidy directly into their bank accounts from today so that they buy the cooking fuel at the market price.

Domestic LPG users will get 568 rupees in the bank account the moment they join the Direct Benefit Transfer Scheme for LPG, which has now been renamed PAHAL.

They will have to use this money to buy 14.2-kg refill at the market price.

Currently, the subsidised LPG costs 417 rupees per 14.2-kg cylinder, while a market-priced refill costs 752 rupees in Delhi.

Pakistan targets 15 Indian outposts in Samba sector, one civilian injured

Pakistani troops have violated the ceasefire again by resorting to overnight firing on 15 border outposts in the Samba Sector of Jammu and Kashmir, leaving one civilian injured on Thursday.

The firing is believed to have started around midnight.

The latest ceasefire violation comes after Islamabad reportedly summoned India’s Deputy High Commissioner to that country last evening to register its protest over the alleged killing of four Pakistani Rangers by the Border Security Force (BSF) in the border areas of the Samba Sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

Cars to become costlier as government withdraws excise duty cut

Auto companies may be propelled to hike auto price following government decision to withdraw excise duty concessions from January 1, sources said on Tuesday.

Earliler, in the interim Budget, UPA government had reduced excise duty to 24 percent from 30 percent in the case of SUVs, 20 percent for mid-sized car from 24 percent and 24 percent for large cars from 27 percent.

In June, the new government led by Narendra Modi extended the excise duty concession by six months to 31 December.

Govt to issue permits to 10,000 new autos

In a move that will increase the numbers of autorickshaws in the capital, Delhi government will issue permits to 10,000 new autos and give top priority to women drivers to run three-wheelers in the city.

Transport department has invited applications for issuing permits to about 10,000 autorickshaws, making it mandatory to install GPS in these new vehicles. At present, there are around 80,000 autos plying in the national capital and with the government’s new move, it will increase the numbers of autos, facilitating commuters.

Isha Mantry death case: doctors awaiting viscera report

The doctors at the government-run Goa Medical College and Hospital have reserved opinion on the cause of death of Isha Mantry, a Mumbai-based fashion designer.

The panel of four doctors who conducted autopsy said the opinion was reserved as results of chemical analysis of viscera and hysto-pathological examination were awaited.

“We are waiting for the final report…doctors have reserved their opinion,” said the Superintendent of Police (North) Priyanka Kashyap, who is heading the investigation team, today.

New Year brings respite from cold in Delhi

The first day of New Year brought respite from intense cold as the minimum temperature was recorded two notches above the season’s average at 8.8 degree Celsius Thursday.

Moderate fog delayed over 40 trains and the Met Office has forecast a cloudy day.

According to Northern Railway, 36 trains coming to the national capital were running late due to the fog, seven were rescheduled and 15 were cancelled.

“The sky will remain partly cloudy and the maximum temperature will hover around 20 degrees Celsius,” said an India Meteorological Department official.

President gives nod to Judicial Appointments Commission Bill

The Constitutional amendment Bill that seeks to scrap the collegium system of appointing judges to higher judiciary has received Presidential nod.

The National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) bill passed by Parliament in August this year has received President’s assent, official sources said.

The new law facilitates the setting up of a commission for appointment of judges, replacing the 20-year-old collegium system, which has been under severe criticism.
