Abducted UP trader’s minor son rescued

An 11-year-old son of a local trader was today rescued, a day after he was allegedly abducted from Ayodhya town of the district, police said.

The boy, who was critically injured, was found in a room in Kanshi Ram Awas colony of the town, police said.

The minor went missing last evening. Later, his father received a ransom call demanding Rs 5 lakh for his release, they said.

The boy’s father informed the police, which put the mobile phones of the callers on surveillance and deployed personnel in some suspected areas of the city.

New Year violence across Colombia kills 24

New Year celebrations in Colombia were marred by violence as 24 people died in various incidents across the country, a drop in deaths from last year, officials said.

There were 33 per cent fewer deaths as the violence- wracked country rang in 2015, according to police commander Rodolfo Palomino.

He said 98.6 per cent of municipalities did not report any violence.

There were 12 fewer deaths compared to last year, he added, when 36 people were killed in violent incidents.

“New Year in Colombia saw a significant reduction in crime,” he told reporters.

Italy doctor with Ebola has recovered: media

An Italian doctor who contracted Ebola in west Africa has recovered from the disease after undergoing experimental treatment, local media has reported.

The 50-year-old from Sicily, who has not been named, has been in isolation at Rome’s Spallanzani institute since he was evacuated from Sierra Leone in mid-November.

Doctors reported ten days ago that he could breathe walk and eat unassisted.

Uncrewed ship with 450 people onboard heads for Italian coast

A merchant ship with no crew and 450 migrants on board is heading towards the Italian coast, the coastguard has said.

“450 migrants are on board a merchant ship with no crew which is headed towards the coast of Puglia,” a Twitter message from the coastguard said.

The new high-seas drama came two days after Italian sailors intercepted a freighter carrying more than 700 mostly Syrian migrants which had been heading for the rocks of Italy’s southeastern shore on autopilot, having been abandoned by the people smugglers who had navigated it from Turkey via Greek waters.

Canada police: 1 dead after shooting at New Year’s Eve party

Gunfire broke out at a New Year’s Eve house party in Calgary, leaving one person dead and six others injured, including one in critical condition, police have said.

Detective Steve Adair said police received multiple calls just after 5 am reporting shots fired at the party attended by more than 50 people. He said by the time officers arrived, the suspect or suspects had already fled.

Police found five people in and around the house with gunshot wounds. Adair said two other people later showed up at hospitals for treatment.

Aus journalist jailed in Egypt asks to be deported: family

Lawyers for jailed Australian journalist Peter Greste have applied to have him deported from Egypt, his family said today, describing it as their “best option” after a court ordered a retrial of the Al-Jazeera reporter and two colleagues.

Greste and Canadian-Egyptian Mohamed Fahmy were sentenced in June to seven years in jail, and Egyptian Baher Mohamed for 10 years for defaming Egypt and aiding banned Islamists.

All three remain in custody pending a new hearing, Egypt’s top court ruled yesterday.

Two-thirds of cancer cases due to bad luck: Study

The majority of cancer cases can be explained by “bad luck” rather than the result of environmental factors and inherited genes, a US study said Thursday.

The study, published in the US journal Science, found that two-thirds of adult cancer incidence across tissues might be caused by random mutations that occur in dividing healthy stem cells.

Five new countries join UNSC as non-permanent members

Five new countries Thursday joined the UN Security Council as non-permanent members, while Chile assumed the rotating presidency for January.

With the start of a new year, five new countries – Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Venezuela and Spain – have begun their two-year term, replacing Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, South Korea and Rwanda, Xinhua reported.

Trinamool cautions ‘Bengal will burn’ MP

Drawing flak over party MP Idris Ali’s comments that West Bengal would burn if Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was arrested by the CBI in connection with the Saradha scam, the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress Thursday cautioned him not to repeat such remarks.

Non-subsidised LPG rate cut by Rs 43.50/cylinder

Price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) was today cut by Rs 43.50 per cylinder as international oil rates slumped to their lowest since May 2009.

A 14.2-kg cylinder of non-subsidised LPG will now cost Rs 708.50, down from Rs 752 previously, in Delhi, oil companies announced today.

This is the fifth straight reduction in rates of non- subsidised or market-priced LPG, which the customers buy after exhausting their quota of 12 cylinders at subsidised rates, since August.
