Over 13 million women abort in China every year

Over 13 million abortions are carried out in China every year with an increasing number of predominantly younger people choosing to end unwanted pregnancies, a media report said Wednesday.

Among female adolescents who have premarital sex, more than 20 percent have unwanted pregnancies, of which up to 91 percent end in abortion. The repeat abortion situation is particularly serious, People’s Daily said in a report.

President greets new Saudi king

President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday greeted the new king of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on his accession to the throne.

“It gives me immense pleasure to extend warm greetings and congratulations on behalf of the government and the people of India and on my own behalf, to your majesty on your accession to the throne,” Mukherjee said in a message.

India and the U.S on Sunday, had signed three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for development of Ajmer, Visakhapatnam and Allahabad.

NHRC issues notices to Delhi Govt., police in electrocution matter

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that neglect by the concerned authorities resulted in the electrocution of 26-year-old Gaurav Rana and his dog by a live wire in a park of north-west Delhi on January 18.

The family of the victim had repeatedly complained to civic authorities about the wire but no action was taken.

The NHRC has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, amount to serious violation of human rights of the victim due to sheer negligence on the part of civic authorities.

Swine flu kills 27 in Rajasthan

Two more deaths due to swine flu have been reported in Rajasthan, taking the toll across the state to 27 this year, officials said Wednesday.

“The death of 42-year-old Panalalal and 72-year-old Hasina Bano were reported from Jaipur Tuesday night,” a health department official told IANS.

As per government figures, from Jan 1 till Wednesday, nine deaths have been reported from Jaipur, three each from Nagaur and Jodhpur, two each from Bhilwara, Barmer, Jaisalmer and Banswara and one each from Ajmer, Bikaner, Alwar and Jhalawar.

Youth killed by friend at Vattepally

In a murder incident occurred at Vattepally, Falaknuma, a youth killed his friend on petty cash issue. According to sources 30-year-old Mohammed Azam Abdullah R/O Mailardevpally had an altercation with his friend Mohammed Mujju at Parda Gate Pahad over the issue of Rs/- 200. Following which Azam was attacked by Mujju with a sharp weapon. Azam who was completely drunk died on the spot. Police have registered a case of murder and arrested Mujju.

Three get life term for raping minor in Bihar

A court in Bihar Wednesday sentenced three people to life in prison for gang-raping an 11-year-old girl in Bhojpur district, a lawyer said.

First additional district and sessions judge of Ara civil court J.P. Mishra pronounced the order.

Nilnidhi Singh, his brother Jay Prakash Singh and Jaggu Pandit have been charged with raping six Mahadalit women, including the girl, at gun point in the district’s Kurmuri village Oct 8, 2014.

Police said the medical report only confirmed the rape of the minor girl.

Government not to appeal against Bombay HC order in Vodafone case

In a significant development, the the government today decided not to appeal against a Bombay High Court ruling that Vodafone was not liable to pay tax demand of Rs 3,200 crore in a transfer pricing case.

“The government will not appeal the judgement of Bombay High Court in the Vodafone case,” sources said after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.

School Aaya dies mysteriously

A woman suspiciously died at Meerpet area. The woman worked as an Aaya at a High School. Her body was recovered from Pedda Cheruvu of Meerpet. According to police 40-year-old R Manga W/O Mahesh, R/O of Meerpet was missing since Monday afternoon. Police have registered a case and began investigations.

Sunanda Pushkar murder: Amar Singh questioned

Delhi Police Wednesday questioned former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh as part of its ongoing probe into the murder of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

Amar Singh was questioned at south Delhi’s Vasant Vihar police station for about two hours.

Amar Singh told media that he was questioned by the Special Investigating Team (SIT) of Delhi Police for about two hours following his earlier statement.
