Special courts need of ‘extraordinary times’: Pak army chiefPakistan’s army chief Gen Raheel Sharif on Friday dismissed concerns that the special courts would strengthen the role of the powerful army, saying it was the need of “extraordinary times” and not the military’s desire.

Gen Sharif made the remarks while addressing a meeting of political leaders at the PM House, convened by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to allay fears that the special courts headed by military officers might be used against politicians.

Pakistan govt seeks early hearing of Lakhvi’s case

Pakistan government today sought the early hearing of LeT operations commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi’s case in the Supreme Court, a day after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind was remanded to 14-day judicial custody for the abduction of an Afghan national.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has challenged the suspension of the detention order of Lakhvi, Geo TV reported.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had suspended on Monday the notification of detention of Lakhvi in the Mumbai case.

PM Modi calls for creating ‘Swachhta Entrepreneurs’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called upon banks to create one lakh “Swachhta Entrepreneurs” within a year, to make the “Swachh Bharat” vision a sustainable reality.

“Can we create Swachhata entrepreneurs. There is immense scope in solid waste management and waste water treatment,” Modi said in his address on the occasion of the dedication of ICICI’s Digital Village to the nation.

The function also marked 60 years of the ICICI group.

Special HC bench to hear Jayalalithaa case on Jan 5

A special bench of the Karnataka High Court will hear, from Jan 5, the corruption case against former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa and her three aides on a daily basis.

Though the case came up for hearing Friday before Justice H. Billappa, Jayalalithaa’s counsel sought its postponement to Monday, as Justice C.R. Kumaraswamy, who has been appointed to hear it, is on leave till Saturday.

PM Modi meets head of Dawoodi Bohra community

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met the head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, who pledged support to the government’s initiatives like Swachh Bharat and Make in India.

During the meeting, Modi sought participation of the Bohra community, which is present in about 400 districts of the country, for the Swachh Bharat campaign.

Minor fever with breathlessness can be swine flu: IMA

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Friday issued a set of guidelines to tackle swine flu and urged citizens not to neglect minor cases of fever with breathlessness.

It said in its guidelines that the matter is important as the current seasonal influenza vaccines are not expected to provide protection against human infection with avian or swine flu viruses.

“However, reducing seasonal influenza risk through vaccination might reduce the theoretical risk for recombination of influenza viruses of animal origin,” it said in a statement.

Exciting days ahead, India will match Chinese growth rate: FM Jaitley

Promising exciting days ahead, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday said India would match Chinese growth rate once the unbanked population comes under structured financial system.

The Minister also said that the real challenge today is to bring a further spurt in investment, concentrate on infrastructure and improve manufacturing in a big way.

“I think time has come to enter into the next phase where we give spurt to these goals which are essential for reviving Indian economy,” he said.

Reserved lanes for movement of emergency vehicles: Delhi BJP

Delhi BJP on Friday requested Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to notify arterial roads across the national capital with reserved lanes for movement of emergency vehicles, similar to the ones during the 2010 Commonwealth Games here.

“Disaster Management lanes should be notified on all the 70 main roads marked by the Disaster Management Authority,” Delhi BJP Unit President Satish Upadhyay said here.

He said there was great pressure of traffic on the roads of Delhi and it had often being seen that even ambulance, fire tenders and PCR vans were stuck in traffic jam.

Zafar Sareshwala new Chancellor of Urdu University

Mr. Zafar Sareshwala, well known industrialist, CEO & MD of Parsoli Corporation Ltd. has been appointed as the new Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad. According to a communication received from Ministry of Human Resource Development at the Vice Chancellor’s Office, President of India in his Capacity as Visitor of the University has appointed Mr. Sareshwala for a term of three years. Mr. Zafar Sareshwala is fourth Chancellor of MANUU. He succeeds Dr. Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, Former Member of Planning Commission.

Murugan takes charge as Mangaluru police commissioner

Senior IPS officer S Murugan, who was in charge of the Anti-Naxal Force in Bengaluru, Friday assumed charge as the city police commissioner.

He replaces R Hithendra, who has been transferred to Bengaluru.

After taking charge, Murugan told reporters that his priority was setting up a people-friendly police system.

Murugan, the fourth police commissioner of the city, hails from Tamil Nadu and is a 1997 batch IPS officer. He had won President’s medal for his achievements.

Bengaluru ISIS Twitter account handler was in touch combatant in Iraq: Police

Alleged pro-Islamic State (IS) Twitter account handler Mehdi Masroor Biswas was in touch with ISIS combatant stationed in Iraq, a top police official said.

“During our interrogation of Biswas, we have found that the IS account holder was in touch with the ISIS combatant and he was an aide,” Bengaluru Police Commissioner M N Reddi told reporters here.

Biswas was produced before a city court today and sent to judicial custody till January 16.

US imposes new sanctions on North Korea

US President Barack Obama authorised Friday the imposition of new sanctions on North Korea, as the “first aspect” of America’s response to the “destructive and coercive” cyber attack against Sony.

The new sanctions will affect three North Korean entities, including a government intelligence agency, and 10 North Korean officials, the Treasury Department said.

Attempt to neglect Urdu – no training for Urdu teachers

There are many examples of narrow minded treatment for Urdu. Here is the case that in the Department of Education Urdu is being neglected. DEO of Nizamabad District is organizing training programs for the teachers of the district. These program starts on 5th January. No arrangement has been made for training the Urdu medium teachers. By doing so, the Department of Education is giving a message that it will not lag behind to darken the future of Urdu. If Urdu medium teachers do not get training, how could it be possible to produce quality students of Urdu medium.

Mid-Day Meals Scheme of the Govt. was started in Govt. School of Huda Colony at Shamsabad with the supply of fine rice. Action against temporary registration vehicles

Departments of Police and Transport Authority have decided to take action against the vehicles which have temporary registration in order to dispose of the cases. Initially, action would be taken against the vehicles which have not taken permanent registration but continuing with TR numbers. According to the statistics available with Transport Department has nearly 52000 vehicles which have not been registered permanently. According to the regulations of the RTA, all the newly purchased vehicles should be registered within a month. If it is not done, fine could be imposed.

New Year dance in Maula Ali Fire Station

Department of Fire Safety is supposed to be alert for 24 hours but if it becomes careless the security of the citizens will be in danger. Hyderabad City Police was busy on 31st December in making arrangements for those who were celebrating New Year’s Day but the officials of fire safety belonging to Maula Ali Fire Station were dancing in the fire station itself in the drunken condition. It is very strange that the consumed liquor in the fire station itself and removed their uniforms and started dancing. If there had been any fire accident, no official was in a position to attend.

Delhi’s crime rate soars 99 percent in 2014

Delhi witnessed an alarming increase of 99.22 percent in crime in 2014 over the previous year, but the police chief said this was because his force was now registering every case.

There were 147,230 registered incidents of crime last year, including a 18.3 percent rise in attacks on women. The total crime incidents stood at 73,702 in 2013.

To add to the scenario, only 29.5 percent of the cases were solved.

Delhi Police Commissioner B.s. Bassi said that all types of crimes shot up: murder, rape, molestation, kidnapping, robbery, snatching, dacoity and burglary.

AP okays plan to provide net connection to 12 million homes

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet on Friday approved a project that envisages providing state-of-the-art optical fibre network in the state and Internet connection to 12 million homes.

The Fiber Grid Project, whose proposal was submitted to the Centre last month, aims to provide optical fibre network to villages and also 10-15 Mbps Internet connection to 12 million homes at an affordable price, Information Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy told reporters here.

He was briefing the media after a marathon cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, that concluded tonight.

Two arrested for raping Japanese girl

A Japanese girl was allegedly confined and raped by a duo in Bihar’s Gaya with the accused having been arrested on Friday by a joint team of Kolkata and Gaya Police.

“A joint team of Kolkata and Gaya Police arrested two brothers — Zahir and Shahid — from their house in Taro village under Fatehpur police station of Gaya district for confining and raping a Japanese girl,” said Senior Superintendent of Police, Gaya, Nishant Kumar Tiwari.

BJP will continue its victory march in Delhi also: Naidu

Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today asserted that BJP will win the ensuing Delhi Assembly polls to notch up a record nine consecutive wins in different elections in the country.
