Fatal road accidents decline in Delhi in 2014

There has been a 31 per cent decline in fatal road accidents in the national capital in 2014 as compared to previous year.

According to Delhi Police, 1559 fatal accidents were reported in the last one year in which 1595 lost their lives while in 2013, the numbers of such road accidents were 1778 in which 1820 people were killed.

Police commissioner B S Bassi said that the force will soon launch a ‘Traffic Commando force’ under which there will be a dedicated unit of 20-25 bike-borne cops who will chase and catch traffic offenders like those involved in over speeding and zigzag driving.

15 cops, 2 motormen injured as commuters vent anger

Delayed trains coupled with the long pending demand for Diva-CST local service led to a violent rail-roko agitation at Diva railway station near Thane this morning, Government Railway Police (GRP) said.

Those injured in the resultant violence included 15 policemen and two motormen.

Thane and Dombivali GRP stations have registered FIRs against unidentified miscreants under IPC sections including 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 353 (assault on public servant) and sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act.

Heavy firing between NDFB(S), Assam Rifles in Sonitpur

An encounter today took place between NDFB-Songbijit militants and 12 Assam Rifles personnel in Itakhola area of Assam’s Sonitpur district along Arunachal Pradesh, a police officer said.

Heavy firing was reported, but there was no report of any injury or casualty so far, district Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar said.

A group of 12 NDFB-S militants came to the Assam side and when the security forces encountered them, they fired upon the personnel leading to an exchange of bullets, police sources added.

KP assembly adopts resolution seeking university status to APS

The provincial assembly of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today unanimously adopted a resolution asking the federal government to grant university status to the army-run public school attacked by Taliban militants last month.

The KP assembly, which met after 24 days, discussed the December 16 attack on Army Public School.

A joint resolution of opposition and treasury benches signed by various political parties was presented in the assembly.

Saleem Khan of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Provincial minister Inayatullah Khan (JI) read out the resolution in the House.

Italy takes control of drifting migrant ship

Italian sailors today managed to take control of a crewless merchant ship as it drifted toward the country’s southern shores in rough seas with 450 migrants on board, in the second such incident in two days.

Six coastguard officers were lowered from a helicopter onto the deck of the Ezadeen as it floated some 40 kilometres off Crotone on Italy’s heel, the navy said.

DP to launch app to register auto-theft report online: Bassi

Delhi Police will soon launch an web-based application through which Delhiites will be able to not just register a case of motor vehicle theft but also track investigations online.

According to police, theft of motor vehicles constitute about one-fifth of the total crimes reported in Delhi.

They are a major cause of public frustration and anger towards police, as people expect early recovery of their vehicle and apprehension of the culprit because vehicle theft causes not only an economic loss but also loss of mobility.

Ramesh criticises amendments in ordinance on land

The ordinance on land acquisition promulgated by President Pranab Mukherjee has amended a provision for the period of time after which a piece of acquired land must be returned to its original owners.

The unamended law stated that the land must be returned after five years if it is not utilised.

However, the ordinance amended the period of five years to also include “the period specified for the setting up of any project” whichever might be greater.

2 women arrested for stealing newborn boy from hospital

A few days after a newly-born baby went missing from a hospital here, police today claimed to have arrested the two women kidnappers in connection with the case.

The duo, identified as Sarita and Sonia, were apprehended by police after the investigators received a tip-off that one of the accused who had no child from her wedlock for last 15 years, incidentally claimed she has been blessed with a baby boy.

A senior police officer said that they verified the information and reached the house of the accused.

SVO books former executive engineer, PWD officials in Jammu

Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation today lodged a case against some Public Works Department employees, including a former executive engineer here after a bridge he sanctioned was washed away in floods.

“The SVO registered a case against the then Executive Engineer, PWD, and others into the allegations of washing away of RCC culvert constructed over Aik Nallah on Karail to Rehal Road Tehsil Bishnah in floods,” a spokesman of the SVO said.

Saudi King Abdullah has pneumonia: royal court

Saudi King Abdullah, hospitalised earlier this week, is suffering from pneumonia and breathing with the aid of a tube, but is in stable condition, the royal court said today.

The long-ailing king, who is believed to be around 90 years old, was admitted to the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh on Wednesday for checks.

Examination “revealed pneumonia, which required the provisional insertion of a tube on Friday evening,” a statement said.

(Siasat News): In a heart-wrenching incident, a 63-year-old man raped a 9-year-old minor belonging to minority community in Jeedimetla.

Additional inspector Jeedimetla police station Mr. Bhaskar Reddy said that the accused Raghunath, resident of Roda Mistry Nagar, called the girl from his neighbourhood to his house on the pretext of showing her the rabbit and later allegedly raped her.

Israel police say settlers attack US officials in West Bank

Israel police say Jewish settlers have attacked American consular officials during a visit the officials made to the West Bank to investigate claims of damage to Palestinian agricultural property.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the settlers today threw rocks at the officials who were forced to return to their vehicle.

She said that accompanying American security personnel did not use their weapons during the incident.

The American Consulate General in Jerusalem had no immediate comment.

11-year-old dies after falling from tractor

A boy, about 11-years-old, who was part of a victory procession taken out by JMM legislator of Baharagora Kunal Sarangi, was crushed to death under the wheels of a tractor in Basadiha village in Ghatsila of East Singhbhum district today, the police said.

The victim was sitting on the tractor, which was part of the victory procession, when he fell down and came under the wheels, Superintendent of Police (city) Shailendra Kumar Sinha said.

The boy was killed instantly, Sinha said adding the body was recovered by the officers of Chakulia police station.

Youth shot dead by two friends

An 18-year-old youth was shot dead allegedly by his two friends in Dhama Enclave colony area of the districts.

Abhishek, an auto driver from Etah, was shot dead last evening allegedly by Radhey and Bunty at his home, said RP Sharma, SHO of Loni Border area.

The duo called Abhishek out of his home at fired at him, police said, adding that he was rushed to GTB hospital in East Delhi, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The SHO said that Abhishek and the two accused were picked up by the police in connection with a case some day ago.

19-yr-old girl commits suicide in UP

A 19-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling at her residence in Kasna area today, police said.

Sapna, wife of a construction worker, hanged herself from the ceiling angle of the labour room she was residing in with her husband, they said.

The body has been sent for postmortem and cause of suicide is being probed, they said.

Miscreants steal cash and coupons from Diva railway station

A group of miscreants stole cash and coupons from the Diva suburban railway station booking office here today, when an irate mob was busy pelting stones and blockading railway lines to protest against erratic local train services, souces said.

Miscreants stole cash and coupons worth Rs 1.18 lakh, the police said, adding that this included Rs 54,906 in cash.

Ticketing clerks ran for their lives after the mob began pelting stones at the booking office, after which miscreants cleaned took over the office and stole cash and coupons.

Teacher drowns, three students missing in Bakkhali sea resort

The body of a teacher attached to a private coaching centre was fished out today from the water of Bay of Bengal in Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas district, while three students are still missing after they went for a bath in the sea, the police said.

A group of 35 people, mostly students from a coaching centre in the city’s Ekbalpur area, had gone to the popular sea resort for an outing, the police said.

Pak resorts to firing, shelling again along IB in Samba,

Stepping up ceasefire violations, Pakistani Rangers tonight resorted to heavy mortar shelling and firing on 8 BSF posts along the Indo-Pak border in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir, forcing a strong retaliation from the Indian side.

Today’s ceasefire violation was the fourth by the Rangers in as many days and the eighth in the last nine days.

With the violations continuing unabated, Home Minister Rajnath Singh ordered the Border Security Force(BSF) to respond with “appropriate” action. Singh also said the firing was unprovoked.

Woman goes missing under mysterious circumstances

A 25-year-old woman has gone missing under mysterious circumstances from Malakpur village, police said today.

The incident came to light today when Karuna’s brother lodged a report at Surajpur police station. She has been missing since last evening, they said.

Karuna, who has a daughter, had come to her brother’s house in Surajpur from Deoria for treatment at AIIMS hospital.

Seven die in Shebab attacks in Somalia: officials

Six Somali soldiers and one civilian were killed today in an attack by Shebab militants on a military checkpoint in Baidoa and in a car bombing in the capital Mogadishu, officials said.

A Somali military official, Colonel Mohamed Hassan, said six soldiers died when the Shebab, Al-Qaeda’s main African affiliate, carried out a pre-dawn raid against their post near Baidoa, some 250 kilometres northwest of Mogadishu.

“The Shebab fighters attacked three locations including the checkpoint outside Baidoa. Three of their fighters were killed,” said Suleyman Abdulahi, another local official.

Modi meets head of Dawoodi Bohra community

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met the head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, who pledged support to the government’s initiatives like Swachh Bharat and Make in India.

During the meeting, Modi sought participation of the Bohra community, which is present in about 400 districts of the country, for the Swachh Bharat campaign.
