Three persons arrested in Assam for alleged connection with the Burdwan blast case were today remanded in eight days’ NIA custody by a city court which sent eight other accused to judicial custody till January 16.

Officiating chief judge at Bankshall Court G C Talukdar remanded Saiful Islam, Rafikul Islam and Sahanur Alam, who were brought on a production warrant by this court from Gauhati Central Jail, till January nine.

India, Bangladesh to work together for better border management

India and Bangladesh have decided to work together for better border management.
The Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) guard the 4,096-km long border between the two sides. They regularly hold meetings to tackle the security challenges.

A 20-member Indian delegation led by BSF Director General Devendra Kumar Pathak was in Dhaka recently to discuss border related issues.

Sri Lankan flying snake sighted in Andhra

A flying snake, known to be endemic to Sri Lanka, has been sighted in Andhra Pradesh’s Seshachalam forests, forest officials and researchers said.

According to researchers, this is the first time that Chrysopelea taprobanica has been sighted outside the island nation.

The species, known to be found in dry zone lowlands and parts of the intermediate climatic zones in Sri Lanka, was spotted at the Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve in Chittoor district.

It was about a year ago that the species was seen in Chalama, a core forest area about 25 km from the hill shrine of Tirumala.

Gold recovers on global cues; silver falls on reduced offtake

Woman killed, eight injured in Pakistani shelling

A woman was killed and eight other people were injured Saturday in Pakistani shelling along the international border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba and Kathua districts, police said.

The woman identified as 45-year-old Toshi Devi, wife of Somnath and a resident of Mangu Chak village in Samba district, was injured in the shelling and succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.

The eight injured were being treated in the same hospital in Jammu, a police officer told IANS.

The shelling forced scores of villagers to migrate.

Three killed as goods train rams into tractor in Jalandhar

At least three people lost their lives while two others got injured after a goods train collided with a tractor at Warriana manned railway crossing here on Saturday.

The accident took place due to the alleged negligence of the person manning the railway crossing gate, who left it open when the train was passing.

Pakistan rejects reports of boat interception off Gujarat

Pakistan today rejected reports that a Pakistani fishing boat said to be carrying explosives was intercepted by the Indian Coast Guard off the coast of Gujarat and the vessel exploded before sinking along with four occupants.

Foreign Office Spokesman Tasnim Aslam categorically denied the reports which said that the incident occurred on the night between December 31 and January 1, some 365 km off the coast of Porbander, generating strong speculation that it was reminiscent of the 2008 Mumbai terror strikes.

Aslam told the media that no boat from Karachi had gone to the open seas.
