Tamils protest against Salman for supporting Rajapaksa

The Tamil parties staged a protest outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence here on Sunday and raised slogans against him for campaigning for Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The angry supporters, who carried posters in their hands which read ‘Khan supporting a War Criminal Srilankan president Rajapaksa’, demanded an apology from the actor for hurting the sentiments of Tamils.

The Australian mind games targetting India’s new Test captain Virat Kohli continued today with opener David Warner saying that it would be interesting to see how “fiery” the batsman would be when he leads the side out in the fourth and final cricket Test starting here on Tuesday.

SP MLA convicted in murder case, faces disqualification

Ruling Samajwadi Party MLA from Charkhari, Kaptan Singh Rajput, has been held guilty along with his brother by a local court here in a 13-year-old murder case and faces disqualification.

Special Judge (anti dacoity) Sanjay Kumar convicted the SP MLA and his brother Laxman Singh yesterday after which they were sent to jail.

The quantum of punishment is likely to be pronounced on Monday.

According to the prosecution, Kishan was attacked and killed by Kaptan and his brother on April 20, 2002.

An FIR was lodged against Kaptan, Laxman and nine others in this connection.

B’desh police besiege Zia at office ahead of polls anniversary

Ahead of the first anniversary of the controversial elections which was boycotted by the opposition, police confined Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Khaleda Zia, besieging her office here and forcing her to spend the night inside the building.

Zia, the former prime minister who refused to participate in what she branded a “farce” election, remained cordoned off inside her Gulshan office since last night with more police forces, including women police, deployed outside the building.

Mumbai cops crackdown on bars, gambling and video parlours

Mumbai Police have raided seven commercial establishments since December 31 night and arrested as many as 110 people for allegedly carrying out illegal activities and violating rules, and rescued several bar girls.

While Mumbai was celebrating the New Year’s eve, the Social Service (SS) branch of city police raided three bars at Nagpada, Ghatkopar and Mulund areas where obscene acts were being performed by the bar girls.

“I have been giving free condoms to all those who visit my shop for paan. Free condoms offer attracts many and it also help to create awareness about population control,” said Nandlal Sah of Katihar district, runs his stall in Phalka bazaar.

Sah, in his early 40s, said: “It is my small effort or contribution to help population control.”

Heptullah to Muslims: Forget reservations, empower yourselves

Union Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptulla on Saturday said reservation in jobs and education alone cannot ensure the development of Muslims.

“There cannot be overall development of Muslims even if they are given a reservation. What is needed is higher and good-quality education for our children so that they can stand on their feet,” said Heptulla while talking to reporters here.

Cyber crimes in India may double in 2015: Study

The number of cyber crimes in India may touch 300,000 in 2015, almost double the level of last year, causing havoc in the financial space, security establishment and social fabric, a study said.

“What is causing even more concern is that the origin of these crimes is widely based abroad in countries including China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Algeria among others,” D.S Rawat, secretary general, ASSOCHAM said while releasing the joint ASSOCHAM-Mahindra SSG study “Cyber and Network Security Framework”.

Zuckerberg starts book club on Facebook inviting 30 million users

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has set a taken a New Year resolution to read a book every two weeks this year wherein he has created a page on the social media website “A Year of Books” inviting 30 million users to like the page.

The reason why Zuckerberg started this page is because he believes that books are “intellectually fulfilling”, reported the Verge.

He said that books allow people to go deeper inside a topic to explore it as compared to most media today.

Unabated cold wave sweeps Jammu and Kashmir

Bone-chilling weather continued in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday as overnight temperatures remained several notches below the freezing point in the valley and Ladakh region.

Weather office Sunday forecast cold and dry weather will continue for next 24 hours, indicating a further drop in the minimum temperature.

“Present cold wave conditions will continue in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours as we are expecting dry, cold weather during this period,” a Meteorological (MeT) department official said.

After a brief illness, the actor passed away in Mumbai.
