KCR unveils Braille books, pats teacher

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today released a few books prepared in Braille transcript at Grand Kakatiya here. The books were written by Yadeswari, a teacher of Kothakota of Mahbunagar district.
The books include life history of Louis Braille, Komaram Bheem, Class X Social Studies and Handbooks for teachers. The Chief Minister appreciated and congratulated the teacher on the occasion for her efforts. The Chief Minister gave her a message with autograph. (NSS)

Tharoor supports Harsh Vardhan’s Pythagoras’ theorem remark

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has come out in support of Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan’s remarks at the Indian Science Congress that algebra and the Pythagoras’ theorem originated in India.

Tharoor in a tweet said: “Modernists sneering at @drharshvardhan should know he was right, as I pointed out in 2003.”

He posted two of his articles published that year in an English daily on the advances of Indian science in ancient India.

Nara lauds Brahmakumaris’ services

AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said the services of Brahmakumaris to bring changes in the society are commendable.
Naidu was speaking at a function organised by Brahmakumaris on the occasion of completion of 10 years of Manas Sarovar centre at Gachibowli.
The Chief Minister said his government would help set up Brahmakumari centers at Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam. Speaking on the occasion, Union minister Sujana Choudhary suggested to Brahmakumaris to prepare a program which can help the youth in rendering services to the country.

Sangakkara a double ton away from Bradman’s record

Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara Sunday said he would love to equal the record of Australian legend Don Bradman’s 12 double hundreds which will in effect motivate him to prolong his Test career.

The Sri Lankan great became the fifth man to reach 12,000 runs during the ongoing second Test against New Zealand here, achieving the landmark in fewer innings than any other player.

Foundation laid for TERI Varsity

Telangana Energy Minister C. Lakshma Reddy today laid a foundation stone for “The Energy and Resources Institute University” at Gopanpally here.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the university will come up on world standards in the sprawling 40-acre campus. He said persistent efforts will be made to make the Telangana State energy surplus in three years. City celebrates Prophet’s birth anniversary

Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed, was celebrated on Sunday with gaiety in the capital and other parts of Telangana state .Meetings, processions, feeding of the poor, blood donation camps and ‘mahafil-e-milads’ or special gatherings in praise of the Prophet were held to mark the occasion.

Guru Gobind Singh jayanti celebrated

The 349th Prakash Purab (birth anniversary) of Tenth and Last Sikh Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singhji, founder of Khalsa Panth, concluded on Sunday with thousands of Sikhs and other community faiths celebrating it with religious fervour, gaiety and devotion by offering prayers to Guru Granth Sahibji.
Prabhandak Committee, Gurudwara Saheb Secunderabad organised mass congregation at Key’s High School Grounds, Secunderabad on Sunday. It was marked by recitations of Gurubani Keertans and Kathas by the renowned Ragi Jathas. They exhorted devotees to follow the teachings of Guru Gobind Singhji.

AirAsia crash: Four more bodies recovered

International search teams Sunday found in the sea bodies of four more people who were on board the AirAsia jet which crashed Dec 28, taking the number of bodies recovered so far to 34.

A Seahawk helicopter of the US navy delivered three bodies to the evacuation command post of the crashed jet first followed by a Singaporean helicopter that brought the fourth body and pieces of debris.

Xinhua quoted Singapore’s ministry of defence as saying that one of its naval ships found the fourth body from the crash site at 7.58 a.m.

Salgaocar rout Mohun Bagan 4-1 in Federation Cup

Three second-half goals helped Salgaocar SC beat Mohun Bagan 4-1 and knock the Kolkata giants out of the Federation Cup football tournament here Sunday.

Douhou Pierre, the Ivory Coast striker, scored a brace, while Clifton Dias and Zambian defender Francis Kasonde netted the other two goals for the victorious Goan side in a Group B match at the Tilak Maidan.

Clear Sunday in Delhi, Monday to be similar

Delhi saw a clear Sunday with the maximum temperature recorded at 19 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average. The Met has forecast a clear Monday.

“There will be moderate fog Monday morning. However the day later will be clear,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The maximum and the minimum temperatures of the day are likely to hover around 20 degrees and 10 degrees Celsius.

The fog Sunday morning in and around the national capital delayed 33 trains, according to the Northern Railway, while 10 trains were rescheduled and 15 were cancelled.

Kashmir border quiet but villagers stay away

The Jammu and Kashmir border was quiet Sunday, a day after Pakistani gunfire left two Indian soldiers and a civilian dead and forced hundreds to flee their homes along the frontier.

Although no firing or shelling was reported Sunday, frightened villagers chose to stay away in makeshift camps in Samba and Kathua districts where they have been sheltered, an official said.

“Since yesterday (Saturday) evening, there has been no ceasefire violation by the Pakistani troops on the international border in the two districts,” a senior official told IANS.

Nepal communist leaders bond over ‘PK’

Leaders of Nepal’s two largest communist parties watched Aamir Khan’s movie “PK” here as part of efforts to mend ties within the Left camp.

The event took place in a theatre ahead of the Jan 22 deadline to draft the country’s new constitution, it was reported Sunday.

Those who watched the film, which has sparked controversy in India, included CPN-UML’s vice chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Bam Dev Gautam and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal as well as Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

Jihadi uses social media to recruit fighters

The social media is increasingly turning out to be a platform for terrorists to peddle their interests and a top militant commander has been using the business networking site LinkedIn to recruit fighters, media reported Sunday.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Ehsanullah Ehsan, spokesperson for the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar militant group, had 69 connections on LinkedIn, which indicated a sizeable network.

Ehsan did not hide his associations and openly promoted himself on the social media site as the spokesperson for the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar.

Security tightened at Delhi airport after terror threat

Security was Sunday tightened at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here following an intelligence alert that terrorists may target Air India flights going to Afghanistan, officials said.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which looks after the airport’s internal security, has been asked to be on alert and keep a tab on the activities of every person.

Besides, Delhi Police, which is in charge of security outside the airport, was also put on alert.

Reed, McDonald finalise divorce

“Twilight” star Nikki Reed and Paul McDonald have finalised their divorce nearly a year after announcing their split.

The 26-year-old and the “American Idol” contestant are officially no longer husband and wife as they reached divorce settlement, reports aceshowbiz.com.

McDonald will get their Nashville house and Reed gets three other houses. She will also get their German Shepherd Enzo and three cars – Range Rover, Toyota Tundra, and Toyota Rav4.

No vehicle is mentioned for McDonald. There is no spousal support either.

Sofia Vergara visits fiance’s hometown

Actress Sofia Vergara visited her fiance Joe Manganiello’s hometown near Pittsburgh.

The newly engaged couple chronicled their trip over social media as they headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Saturday game, reports eonline.com

“Getting ready for the big game…@Steelers,” Manganiello tweeted.

He later wrote to the NFL team’s official Twitter account that the players can “count us in” when it comes to attending Saturday’s matchup.

Before deciding to go on for football match, Manganiello treated his fiancee to a meal at Primanti Bros restaurant.

China’s former IOC member He Zhenliang dies

China’s former International Olympic Committee (IOC) member He Zhenliang has died aged 85.

He, who was elected to the IOC in 1981 and elected IOC vice president in 1989, died at a hospital in Beijing Sunday afternoon, his family said, reports Xinhua.

He was instrumental in Beijing’s successful bid for the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games.

N. Vijay Shankar Prashanth knocked out Davis Cupper Yuki Bhambri 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, in the second round of the qualifying competition of the Aircel Chennai Open here Sunday.

Also making his exit was second seeded Andre Kudryavtsev of Russia, who went down in three sets to local challenger Vinayak Kaza.

Joining the two Indians in the third round was compatriot Sasi Kumar Mukund who beat seventh seeded German Peter Torebko in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

Tamils protest against Salman Khan in Mumbai

A few Tamil people staged protest against Salman Khan in front of the Bollywood superstar’s residence here Sunday for supporting Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Some Tamils are upset with the “Wanted” star, who recently visited Sri Lanka to campaign for Rajapaksa, ahead of the presidential election in the island-country.

Security has been increased outside Salman’s Galaxy apartment because of the protest, which began Sunday morning from around 10 a.m.

Amit Shah to launch BJP’s drugs campaign Jan 22

BJP president Amit Shah will launch the party’s campaign against drugs from Amritsar Jan 22, a senior BJP leader said Sunday.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal said that the campaign would be launched under the aegis of the party’s youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

“BJYM president and MP Anurag Thakur and Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma would be supervising the campaign against drugs. The drive would cover Punjab state in three phases, with its culmination to take place on the occasion of Baisakhi on April 14,” he said.

Mamata’s nephew slapped in rally

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee was today slapped by a party worker during a rally at Chandipur in East Midnapore district.

The party worker, who is yet to be identified, suddenly climbed up to the stage and slapped Banerjee, President of the Trinamool Youth Congress, when he was addressing the rally, police officials said.

Other party workers soon caught the man and beat him up, they said, adding, he was being taken to the hospital. After the incident the rally of party’s youth wing did not progress.

‘Crashed AirAsia jet’s pilots did not get weather report’

AirAsia Indonesia allegedly violated standard procedures which resulted in the pilots of the airline’s doomed plane not receiving a required weather report before takeoff, a media report has said citing leaked official documents.

The Jakarta Post reported that the leaked documents have given rise to allegations that AirAsia Indonesia violated procedures that lead to the crash of the Flight QZ8501 carrying 162 people in the Java Sea.
