Hazare to launch Lokpal stir; flays Modi Govt on black money

Social activist Anna Hazare today said he will launch a fresh stir on the Lokpal issue even as he criticised the Narendra Modi government for its “failure” to bring back black money stashed away abroad and said that people will teach it a lesson for the “fraud” done on them.

“The Modi government has not implemented the Lokpal Act even after 365 days of the President’s having signed it. It has not fulfilled assurances made to the people,” he said.

Talent pool needs grooming for India’s development: Naik

Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik today said India has a big talent pool which needs grooming and promotion for development of the country.

Naik, also the chancellor Dr B R Ambedkar University, formerly Agra University, was addressing its 80th convocation ceremony.

The university gave away 495 PhD, five D Lit, 81 M Phil degrees.

Eminent physicist, educationist and Padam Shri M S Sodha was the chief guest at the ceremony.

Union Minister of State for HRD Ram Shankar Katheria also addressed the gathering.

Afghanistan parliament rejects most of Ghani’s cabinet

Afghan lawmakers today rejected most of President Ashraf Ghani’s nominees for the new cabinet, in a fresh setback for the newly formed “national unity government”.

The lower house of parliament voted on 18 of Ghani’s 25 selections for ministerial jobs and rejected 10 of them including the proposed defence minister.

Those who won approval included Salahuddin Rabbani, the former head of the Peace Council and nominee for foreign affairs minister, and Noorul Haq Ulumi, the nominee for interior minister.

IIMA, ISB climb up FT Global MBA rankings; IIMB slips

Premier B-schools like Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad have climbed up slightly from their current positions to higher ranks in the Financial Times (London) Global MBA Ranking-2015.

However, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, which secured a place in the chart at the 68th position last year, has slipped to 82.

IIM-A moved to 26th rank in the recent ranking from 30 in 2014, while ISB climbed to 33rd position in 2015 from 36 in 2014, according to the FT rankings.

Govt not to challenge transfer pricing rulings in Vodafone, other cases

Wooing overseas investors, government Wednesday decided against challenging the Bombay High Court decision favouring Vodafone in the Rs 3,200 crore tax case and adopt a similar approach in transfer pricing litigations involving other MNCs like Shell.

The government wants to convey a clear and positive message to investors globally that its decisions would be “fair, transparent and within the four corners of law”, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said briefing reporters after a meeting of the Union Cabinet.

10 priests charged in Spain child abuse case pope helped air

A Spanish judge charged 10 Catholic priests with committing or abetting sexual abuse of a teenage altar boy, court papers showed today, in a case Pope Francis helped bring to light.

Judge Antonio Moreno formally accused 10 priests and two lay people in the southern city of Granada of sexual abuse or complicity in the abuse of the boy from 2004 to 2007.

In terms of the number of suspects, it is the biggest ever paedophilia case to hit the Catholic Church in Spain.

Stephen Fry denies baby plans

Comedian Stephen Fry has denied reports that he has plans to start a family with new husband Elliott Spencer.

In a latest interview, Fry, 57, had apparently hinted the newlyweds would soon hear the “patter of tiny feet”, reported Hello magazine.

But asked outright by a Twitter follower whether he had “baby plans”, Fry, replied, “No – don’t believe what you read it the papers!”

Fry and Spencer tied the knot in Dereham on January 17, 11 days after they announced their intention to marry.

Brianna Brown returns to ‘Devious Maids’

Actress Brianna Brown is returning to ‘Devious Maids’ as a series regular for season three.

The 35-year-old actress, who plays Taylor Stappord on the comedy-drama, will reappear after making a guest appearance last year, reported Deadline.

Brown starred in the first season, before her character moved to Washington DC with her husband.

She recently recurred in USA Network’s Graceland, in addition to guest appearances on ‘The Mentalist’ and ‘Revenge’.

Gilles Marini was previously confirmed to be promoted to series regular status on ‘Devious Maids’ as Sebastien.

Elton John, Alan Ball’s musical period drama gets pilot

‘Virtuoso’, a long-gestating project from Elton John and Alan Ball has given a greenlight by HBO.

The hour-long drama is set in 18th century Vienna and follows a class of musicians from all across Europe at the prestigious Academy of Musical Excellence.

The pilot is written by Ball based on a story he co-wrote with his partner, actor Peter Macdissi, and Steve Hamilton Shaw, reported Ace Showbiz.

The three will executive produce the pilot along with John and his husband, David Furnish. Filming is set to take place in the spring in Budapest.

Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis take baby out on beach

Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher and his fiancee Mila Kunis were spotted taking their daughter Wyatt out for a walk on the beach.

In new photos, the couple could be seen doting on their baby girl during the family trip, reported Ace Showbiz.

In one photo, the 36-year-old actor was seen gently picking Wyatt up out of her stroller, giving her a cuddle and then placing her into the car seat as they prepared to go home.

Another photo showed Wyatt with big eyes, a button nose and brown-coloured hair. Some other pictures showed Kunis chatting away with her friends.

Christina Aguilera set to open NBA all-star game

Pop star Christina Aguilera is another star heading to the NBA All-Star Game.

The NBA announced that the pop diva would kick off the game with a special performance during the “Entertainment Series, presented by JBL” on February 15 at Madison Square Garden, reported Ace Showbiz.

She will be joined by legendary New York City dance troupe the Rockettes during her set. According to the NBA, the former Disney princess will “take center stage for a New York-themed medley” while the Rockettes “will dazzle the crowd with eye-high kicks and precision choreography.”

Shah Rukh Khan becomes first Indian to use Twitter’s mobile video camera

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has become the first Indian to use the mobile video camera feature on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Twitter recently announced that it will be introducing a new feature which allows users to capture, edit and share videos right from the site.

“Twitter has always come up with some very interesting features and I am very glad that they look into the suggestions made to them as well. This mobile video camera of Twitter is something I am definitely going to enjoy using often,” Shah Rukh, 49, said in a statement.

Israel: UN must live up to mission of war against genocide

The president of Israel urged the world’s nations to wage an all-out war against genocide saying “the Holocaust of the Jews was not the final chapter in the brutal scheme of man against his fellow man.”

Reuven Rivlin told the UN commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp that evil is not limited to any religion, country or ethnic group and warned that it is wrong and misleading to view Islam, Judaism, or Christianity, as “enemies of the world.”

Indo-US relationship essential for prosperity in the 21c

The relationship between India and the US is essential to promote stability, democracy and prosperity in the 21st century and two countries should continue to strengthen their relations, a Congressional resolution has said.

The resolution introduced by Congressman Joseph Crowley, a top Democratic leader in the House of Representatives on January 27 recognises the democratic values shared between the United States and India.

The resolution has called for the continued strengthening of relations between the two nations.

Animals have feelings, are ‘not furniture’: French parliament

France’s parliament has officially recognised animals as “living, sentient beings” rather than “furniture”.

After more than a year of often passionate debate, a bill updating the legal status of animals in France was adopted aligning the 200-year civil code with current rural and penal law that already recognised animals “as living and sentient beings.”

When the civil code was drawn up by Napoleon in 1804 animals were considered primarily as working farm beasts, and designated as goods or furniture that could be owned.

Scientist Pedro Leonardo Mascheroni, 79, and his wife Marjorie Roxby Mascheroni, 71, had pleaded guilty after they were caught trying to pass on classified information to an FBI agent posing as a Venezuelan government official.

French police question 8-year-old over terrorism comments

An eight-year-old boy in France was questioned by police for half after he allegedly made comments in school in praise of terrorists, police said.

The child triggered concern when he refused to take part in a minute’s silence at his school in the southern city of Nice after Islamist gunmen shot dead 12 people at the Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo on January 7, according to Marcel Authier, in charge of the region’s public security.

The boy’s teacher said the child also expressed “solidarity” with the gunmen.

Hollande asks Turkey to ‘break taboos’ on Armenia WWI killings

French President Francois has called on Turkey to take new steps towards the “truth” behind the mass killings of Armenians a century ago, saying “it is time to break the taboos”.

“The effort towards the truth must continue and I am convinced that this centenary year will see new gestures, new steps on the road to recognition,” Hollande said yesterday at a dinner with Armenian groups in Paris.

Armenia says an estimated 1.5 million people were killed by Ottoman forces during World War I in what it calls a genocide.

Iran, Europe negotiators to meet in Istanbul

Iranian officials will meet with European members of the P5+1 group in Istanbul today under the ongoing diplomatic effort to secure a deal over Tehran’s disputed nuclear programme.

The meeting with British, French and German diplomats was announced by Iran’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham during a weekly press briefing in Tehran.

The EU, which has chaired the P5+1 talks, said separately that its political director Helga Schmid would also attend.

Madeleine Arthur joins ‘Supernatural’ cast

‘Supernatural’ has cast Madeleine Arthur in an upcoming episode.

The ‘Big Eyes’ actress will play a teenage version of a female victim, who is transformed into her younger self alongside Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), reported Variety.

Dylan Everett will reprise the role as Dean’s teenage self, having previously featured in flashbacks on the show in 2013.

The episode, named ‘About a Boy’, will air on February 3.

Arthur recently recurred in ‘The Tomorrow People’, and appeared in an episode of AMC’s ‘The Killing’.

Japan reviewing authenticity of fresh militant message: PM

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said today that Tokyo was analysing the authenticity of a fresh message from Islamic militants threatening to kill Japanese and Jordanian hostages unless an imprisoned jihadist is released.

“We are aware of the new message,” Abe said during a parliamentary session.

“Now, we are verifying (its authenticity), but we will do our best to secure the release of the Japanese national as soon as possible,” he added.

Tokyo is pleading to Amman to help rescue Japanese journalist Kenji Goto, who has been taken hostage by the Islamic State group.
