Online dieters who make more ‘connections’ lose more weight

A new study has recently revealed that people who make more connections while using an online weight management program lose around more than 8 percent of their body weight in six months.

The Northwestern University study shows that online dieters with high social embeddedness, who logged in regularly, recorded their weigh-ins and “friended” other members can do very well at losing weight with minimal professional help.

It’s Serena versus Sharapova in Oz Open final

World number one Serena Williams trounced her unseeded American opponent Madison Keys in straight sets to set up a clash against arch-rival Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open final in Melbourne.

The 18-time grand slam champion secured a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Madison to advance to the final round of the first grand slam of the year.

Earlier in the day, Russian second seed Maria Sharapova crushed compatriot Ekaterina Makarova with a 6-3, 6-2 win in 87 minutes to progress into the final round.

Currently, Serena leads Sharapova 16-2 in their head to head matches.

Kelly Clarkson’s new album to release March 3

Singer Kelly Clarkson’s sixth studio album, “Piece by Piece”, will release March 3.

RCA Records announced the news Monday along with a behind-the-scenes video in which Clarkson shows that she and several others in a recording studio, reports eonline.com.

“Piece by Piece” is Clarkson’s first studio album since 2011’s “Stronger”, though she did release the holiday collection “Wrapped in Red” in 2013.

‘Hawaizaada’ declared tax free in UP

Filmmaker Vibhu Puri’s directorial debut film “Hawaizaada”, which will hit the screens Friday, has been declared tax free in Uttar Pradesh.

Green tea ingredient shows promise against oral cancer

A compound found in green tea may trigger a process that kills oral cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone, finds a promising study.

According to food scientists from Pennsylvania State University, the research could lead to treatments for oral cancer as well as other types of cancer.

Earlier studies had shown that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a compound found in green tea, killed oral cancer cells without harming normal cells.

India doctor faces Rivers suit

An Indian-origin anaesthetist is among five medical personnel who face a multi-million dollar lawsuit over the death of American actress and comedienne Joan Rivers.

The lawsuit was filed in the New York state supreme court by Rivers’s daughter Melissa against New York clinic Yorkville Endoscopy, the Frontier Healthcare, which has a stake in the ownership of the clinic, Rivers’s personal physician Gail Korovin, Dr Lawrence Cohen, anaesthetists Renuka Bankulla, Robert Koniuta and Suzanne Scarola.

Hezbollah killed Israeli soldiers in exchange of fire

Two Israeli soldiers and a Spanish soldier of the UN peacekeeping forces were killed when Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group Wednesday attacked an Israeli army convoy and Israel retaliated.

The Israeli army confirmed Wednesday afternoon the death of two of its soldiers near the Israel-Lebanon border in a Hezbollah missile attack, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Earlier today, an anti-tank missile hit an Israel Defence Force vehicle in the Mount Dov area, killing two soldiers and wounding additional seven, two of them moderately,” a military spokesperson said in a statement.

Ebola vaccine safe, generates immune response, shows

The first trial results of Ebola vaccine at Oxford University suggest the vaccine has an acceptable safety profile and is able to generate an immune response.

“The Ebola vaccine was well tolerated. Its safety profile is pretty much as we had hoped,” said professor Adrian Hill of the Jenner Institute at Oxford University who led the trial.

The results suggest that the vaccine is suitable for further testing in West Africa during the current outbreak.

Sensex down 153 points; metal stocks drop

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Thursday was trading at 152.64 points or 0.52 percent down as metal stocks dropped.

Good buying was observed in capital goods sector, while heavy selling pressure was seen in metal, banking and auto sectors.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 29,516.49 points, was trading at 29,406.54 points (at 09.37 a.m.) in the early session, down 152.64 points or 0.52 percent from the previous day’s close at 29,559.18 points.

S. Jaishankar takes charge as foreign secretary

S. Jaishankar Thursday took charge as the new foreign secretary, replacing incumbent Sujatha Singh.

“My priorities are the government’s priorities,” Jaishankar told reporters after being asked about his priorities.

Jaishankar said it was a “big responsibility” and he was “very honoured” to be assigned the responsibility.

Jaishankar, an Indian Foreign Service officer of 1977 batch, has been appointed the new foreign secretary for a period of two years.

Two suspected Kuki militants killed, three injured in encounter

Two suspected Kuki militants were killed and three others were injured in a gun battle between 8 Assam Rifles and the militants at Kadangband in Imphal.

The encounter took place on Wednesday evening at around 7.30 p.m that lasted for ten minutes.

The three injured persons have been identified as Helen Kuki (30), Satmamang Kuki (23) and Thangkholin Kuki (25).

All the three injured suspected KNF cadres are undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, informed a source.

Women becoming increasing vulnerable to cervical cancer

With lifestyles in India changing, women are becoming increasingly vulnerable to cervical and breast cancers.

The latest trends point towards more younger women contracting breast cancers whereas the normal age of contracting the disease was anywhere between 45 and 55 years till a decade ago, said doctors at AIIMS.

According to recent reports, India has 17 percent of the world’s population suffering from breast cancer.

UN Security Council to meet on Israel-Lebanon flare-up

The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting from 2100 GMT on Wednesday to discuss the flare-up of violence on the Israeli-Lebanon border, diplomats said.

France requested the urgent talks in the 15-member council after two Israeli soldiers and a Spanish UN peacekeeper died in the exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters.

The violence raised fears of another all-out conflict between the two countries, who fought a month-long war in 2006, in a region already wracked by fighting with Islamist fighters in Syria and Iraq.

SC directs search engines to block sex determination ads

The Supreme Court has directed search engines like Google India to strictly comply with the laws and block advertisements on sex determination.

The court categorically said, if any advertisement existed on any search engine, they should be withdrawn.

The court has also directed the search engines to upload on their policy page and the terms of service page its order that they would not advertise or sponsor any advertisement which violated Section 22 of Prohibition of advertisement relating to pre-natal determination of sex (PC-PNDT) Act.

Israel has right to self-defense against Hezbollah: US

The United States stood by Israel today as it exchanged fire with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon in their most serious clashes in five years.

“We support Israel’s legitimate right to self-defense and continue to urge all parties to respect the blue line between Israel and Lebanon,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.

She added that Washington condemned Hezbollah’s shelling of an Israeli military convoy in an Israel occupied border area in which two Israeli soldiers were killed.

Simulated Mars mission gutted in fire

A simulated Mars mission held in the Utah desert in the US came to an abrupt end, when the research station was gutted in fire, media reported on Wednesday.

According to a Daily Mail report, the mission involved four “astronauts” living in isolation for two weeks in the hope of recreating the psychological effects of life on Mars.

Instead, they had to deal with a real life emergency when a devastating fire, with 10 feet (3 metres)-high flames destroyed the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS).

The crew members attempted to battle the flames on their own for over an hour.

India, US disagree over food security

Disagreements flared up between the US and India here today at the first informal meeting to find a permanent solution on public stockholding for food security in developing countries.

The G-33 countries led by India and including China want public stockholding for food security purposes to come under the “Green Box” – domestic support for agriculture that causes minimal or no trade distortion.

Under current WTO rules, developing countries are subject to only minimal disciplines on agriculture subsidies.
