IMF working on alternate measures as US blocks reforms

With the US stalling quota reforms in the IMF that would increase the stakes of emerging countries like India, the world body today said it is working on alternate measures to go ahead with much-needed reforms that reflect the ground realities of the 21st century.

The IMF Executive Board said it would take another six months to map out the reform and thus complete the 15th review by December 15, 2015.

The 2010 reforms were backed by the US but now are being blocked by the US Congress.

US Senate panel advances Iran sanctions bill

The US Senate Banking Committee approved a controversial measure today that would ratchet up sanctions on Iran, a legislative weapon Congress could wield after March if international nuclear talks hit an impasse.

Senators voted 18 to 4 to advance the so-called Kirk-Menendez bill, which is steadfastly opposed by the White House.

“It is clear that further action is necessary to compel Iran to reach an acceptable agreement, which is why I strongly support this critical bill,” committee chairman Senator Richard Shelby said after the vote.

Angry youths stone Nigerian leader’s convoy; police fire gas

Youths angry at the Nigerian government’s failure to fight Islamic extremists threw stones today at President Goodluck Jonathan’s electioneering convoy in the eastern town of Jalingo, breaking windshields and windows on several vehicles.

Police used tear gas and whips to disperse the mob. From Jalingo, Jonathan flew to Yola, capital of Adamawa state, where officials had declared the route of his motorcade a no-go area.

Drive seeking hair launched to support Cancer patients

In an initiative to support cancer patients who lose hair during treatment, a drive to collect hair and make wigs for them was launched here today with 50 girls of a city college donating their hair locks.

The second edition of “Tangled”, a drive seeking donation of hair, and an awareness campaign was launched at the Women’s Christian College here.

It was being organised by the “Rotaract Club” of the college with the support of a salon and a wig maker and it will be on till February 13.

HC directive to TN Govt

Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu Government to constitute a state level coordination committee within a month if it had not been set up so far as required under Section 13 of the Persons with disabilities Act,1955.

The directive was issued by first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh during the hearing of the suo motu PIL taken up by the court following the attack by police on visually challenged persons during a protest recently.

London summons Russian envoy after bombers near UK airspace

Britain summoned Russia’s ambassador today and asked him to explain why Russian warplanes flew near British airspace, disrupting civil aviation.

The Foreign Office said today that Royal Air Force Typhoon jets were scrambled to escort Russian Bear bombers in a “U.K. area of interest” on Wednesday. The Russian planes did not enter British airspace, but flew along the coast and over the English Channel without communicating with British air traffic control.

Apple roars back to close smartphone gap with Samsung

With its hot-selling large-screen iPhones released last year, Apple has roared back to the top of the pack with South Korea’s Samsung in the smartphone market.

Surveys released today showed the popular iPhone 6 and 6 Plus helped Apple pull to a virtual tie in the fourth quarter with Samsung, which has been the leader for the past three years.

The research firm Strategy Analytics said Apple and Samsung shipped 74.5 million smartphones each in the last three months of 2014 for a market share of just under 20 percent.

2 make vain bid to loot coop bank

Two persons made a vain attempt to break the locker containing jewels worth Rs one crore in the Agricultural Primary cooperative Bank at Keezhkandani in the district after immobilising the security guard and dumping him in a roadside pit, police said today.

The culprits had tied the guard to a cot and dumped him into the pit around midnight yesterday.

They had broken open three locks but could not break the locker where jewels worth Rs.One crore had been kept.

Passersby who heard the security’s feeble voice rescued him.

Argentine prosecutor laid to rest amid mystery over his death

The special prosecutor whose mysterious death set off a political firestorm in Argentina was laid to rest today, as an investigation tries to determine whether he died by his own hand or was murdered.

Alberto Nisman, 51, was buried in a Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires near several of the victims who died in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish charity known as AMIA.

Nisman had spent the last 14 years of his life trying to unravel who carried out the horrific attack, which killed 85 people and injured another 300.

French general describes ‘horror’ of Spain jet crash

A French general today described the scene of horror that unravelled in Spain when an F-16 Greek fighter jet experienced a technical failure on take-off and crashed into pilots and mechanics on the ground.

Nine French and two Greek personnel died and about 20 people were injured Monday after the two-seater F-16, owned by Greece, crashed into parked aircraft at the Los Llanos base in southeastern Spain during a NATO exercise.

Complaint against 2 cops for trying to rape woman

A married woman has lodged a complaint with police here alleging that two cops tried to rape her at Shalimar Garden area.

According to the complaint, the woman went to Shalimar Garden police station regarding some case yesterday after which the police officials, in a bid to resolve the case, took her to a nearby flat and tried to rape her. The woman, however, fled from the spot.

“The case is being investigated,” Shalimar Garden Station in-charge Sabej Khan said.

Syria talks in Moscow end without visible results

Representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition wrapped up four days of consultations in Moscow on Thursday with a general statement avoiding any of the difficult issues surrounding the country’s nearly four-year civil war.

Vitaly Naumkin, the head of the Moscow-based Institute for Eastern Studies who moderated the discussions, said Thursday they focused on a platform for future talks and made no attempt to tackle the disputed issues. He said the fate of Syrian President Bashar Assad wasn’t on the agenda.

Gaza flotilla lawyers asks ICC to reconsider probe

Lawyers representing the Comoros today asked International Criminal Court judges to order its chief prosecutor to reconsider her decision not to probe Israel’s deadly 2010 raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla.

The Comoros, which has referred the case to the ICC, “asks the Chamber to request the Prosecutor to reconsider her decision not to open an investigation,” its lawyers said in papers filed before the Hague-based court.

Cong seeks restoration education quota for Muslims

Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil today met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking reinstatement of quota in education for Muslims, announced by the erstwhile Congress-NCP government.

Vikhe Patil submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister stating that the decision to provide quota in jobs and education for Muslims through an ordinance was taken by the previous government on July 9, last year.

No plan to hand over Guantanamo to Cuba: US

US President Barack Obama does not plan to return the territory on which the Guantanamo Bay naval base is located to Cuba, although he aims at closing down the prison set up there, the White House said Thursday.

During a speech Wednesday at the Community of Latin American and Carribean States (CELAC) summit in Costa Rica, Cuban President Raul Castro mentioned the return of Guantanamo Bay as one of the matters pending in the process launched to normalise relations with Washington.

Amit Shah confident of two-thirds victory in Delhi polls

Ruling out any rifts within the BJP, its chief Amit Shah on Thursday said that the party would emerge victorious with two-third majority in the upcoming Delhi elections.

Claiming that the induction of former Team Anna member Kiran Bedi as the party’s chief ministerial candidate was not a “compulsion”, he said her clean image would help the party.
