Sri Lanka says military ‘sabotaging’ post-war reconciliation

Sri Lanka’s new government today accused the military of trying to sow unrest to sabotage its efforts to bring about ethnic reconciliation in the war-ravaged north of the country.

Sri Lanka has promised to give greater autonomy to the mainly Tamil northern peninsula, which was worst hit by the decades-long civil war, and remained heavily militarised under the former administration.

The government said it was investigating allegations that two senior military officers were training 400 troops to provoke unrest in Jaffna, capital of the northern province.

11 child labourers from Bihar, Odisha rescued in TN

Eleven child labourers from Odisha and Bihar were today rescued from a spinning mill here by anti-child labour project officials.

The children, including six girls, were aged under 14 and were found working in the PKPN Spinning mill during a surprise check carried out by the officials led by Inspector of Factories Anita Rosalin Mary, officials said.

Three of the girls belonged to Odisha and the others were from Bihar, they said, adding arrangements were made for sending back the children to their home towns under the directions of District Collector V Dakshinamurthy.

Women rally against Egyptian police after shooting

Dozens of women protested today against Egypt’s police in the central Cairo square where a female demonstrator was shot dead on the eve of the anniversary of the 2011 uprising.

Shaima al-Sabbagh was killed during a leftist march Saturday in which participants were to place wreaths at a memorial in honour of protesters killed during the past four years.

The government and police have said they are investigating the shooting, which happened ahead of the January 25 anniversary of the 2011 revolt that toppled veteran leader Hosni Mubarak.

UK government: Data from police killings probes lost in mail

The British government says files from three judge-led inquiries two of them into killings by police have been lost in the mail.

The Justice Ministry said today that two discs containing documents were reported missing January 8 “having been dispatched by post.” It said “intensive searches” had failed to find them.

The ministry says lawyers are reviewing the documents to determine whether they contain sensitive material.

Airbus shake up to get A400M military plane back on track

Airbus announced today a shakeup in the management of its A400M programme as it sought to bring an end to repetitive delays hitting the military transport aircraft.

The company announced Fernando Alonso would take over as head of military aircraft at the Airbus Defence and Space unit, replacing Domingo Urena-Raso.

Airbus delivered the first of the turboprop aircraft to France in September 2013, four years late and 6.2 billion euros (USD 7.0 billion) over budget.

Cracking the ATM heist near here within a day, police today arrested a 23-year-old bank employee for allegedly looting the money and recovered Rs 21.6 lakh stolen cash.

Rajendran, working with the Canara Bank as a temporary staff on daily wage basis, was arrested after intense interrogation during which he admitted to having stolen the cash from the ATM using its password and a key to open the main chamber without damaging the machine, police said.

Asked if pre-release controversies help a film in any way, on this, Kay Kay told IANS: “I think that’s a very wrong thought. I don’t think a film needs controversy to get mileage. A film should run on its own merit.”

I exercise six days a week: Anil Kapoor

Actor-filmmaker Anil Kapoor says he exercises six days a week and recalls the time when he travelled to the location shooting of his 2005 film “My Wife’s Murder” on his bicycle.

The 58-year-old was here along with Vijay Sampla, union minister of state for social justice and empowerment, to inaugurate the International Bicycle and Fitness Expo (IBFE) organised at Pragati Maidan Thursday.

Ingredients:

1. 5 eggs, hard boiled
2. Half cup onion paste
3. 2 tsp ginger garlic paste
4. 4 tsp cashew paste
5. 1 tomato grated
6. 1 tsp tamarind paste
7. 1 tsp black pepper powder
8. 1 tsp cumin powder
9. 1 tsp sugar
10. Half cup oil
11. Salt and red chilly powder to taste.

Method:

1. Carefully pierce the eggs with fork, without breaking them.
2. Heat oil in a pan, add onions and cook till pinkish.
3. Now add ginger garlic paste and after five minutes add all other ingredients.
4. Saute till oil starts separating from the mixture.
5. Add the eggs and mix well.

2. 11/4 cup gur (jaggery)
3. 1tbsp saunf (fennel)
4. 3tbsp ghee
5. Salt to taste
6. 1.2 tsp baking powder
7. Oil to fry

Method:
1. In a bowl, dissolve shredded gur in hot water, stirring continuously.
2. In another bowl, mix together atta, ghee, salt and baking powder.
3. Add dissolved gur to atta mixture and mix to form batter of dropping consistency. If batter is too thick, add more water. Then, add saunf.
4. Now, heat oil in a wide pan on high flame.

Uber rape survivor files lawsuit in US court against company

A 25-year-old Indian woman, raped by an Uber driver in New Delhi last month, has filed a lawsuit against the taxi service company in a US court arguing that it does not adequately screen its drivers and its “negligence and fraud” lead to her being sexually assaulted and humiliated.

The woman has not been named in the 36-page lawsuit filed in the California federal court against the San Francisco- based firm and has been identified only as ‘Jane Doe’.
