Breezy morning in Delhi, mercury to touch 30 degrees C

A breezy morning greeted Delhiites today with the minimum temperature settling a notch above the season’s average at 11.4 degrees Celsius.

Humidity in air was recorded as 61 per cent at 8.30 AM and it was misty early in the morning.

According to MeT department officials, it is going to be a clear day ahead.

“It will be mainly clear sky. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 30 degrees Celsius,” said the weatherman.

Crude oil futures plunge 4.28% on weak Asian cues

Crude oil futures tumbled 4.28 per cent to trade at Rs 4,030 per barrel as speculators indulged in reducing exposures after it fell to new multi-year lows in Asian trade.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in December fell sharply by Rs 180, or 4.28 per cent, to Rs 4,030 per barrel in 3,183 lots.

Oil for January next delivery plunged by Rs 176, or 4.15 per cent, to Rs 4,068 per barrel in a turnover of 229 lots.

Rupee down 22 paise against dollar in early trade

The rupee lost 22 paise to trade at a fresh nine-month low of 62.25 against the US dollar in early trade today at the Interbank Foreign Exchange due to rise in the greenback’s value against other currencies overseas.

Dealers attributed the fall in rupee to dollar’s gains against the euro and yen overseas.

However, a higher opening in the domestic stock market limited the fall of the domestic currency.

The rupee had tumbled 16 paise to close at almost a nine-month low of 62.03 against the dollar on Friday following sustained dollar demand from importers, including oil firms.

Pakistan army chief meets US Secretary of State

Pakistan army chief General Raheel Sharif met US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington, Geo News reported.

During the meeting Sunday they discussed issues relating to regional security and withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.

They particularly deliberated how to tackle security issues in the region.

The meeting was also attended by Pakistani ambassador to US Jalil Abbas Jilani.

Chhattisgarh will become Naxal-free soon: Raman Singh

The day is not far when Chhattisgarh will become “Naxal-free”, thanks to the joint efforts of state government and Centre in wiping out the Maoist menace, Chief Minister Raman Singh said today.

He conveyed this to a delegation of National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) which called on him here.

The delegation headed by NSAB chairman and ex-Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran met Singh at his official residence and discussed different aspects of Naxalism.

Sensex trades flat; consumer durables stocks surge

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets Monday was trading flat at 24.18 points or 0.08 percent up as consumer durables stocks surged.

Good buying was observed in consumer durables, auto and healthcare sectors, while selling pressure was seen in capital goods sector.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 28,748.22 points, was trading at 28,718.17 points (at 09.22 a.m.) in the early session, up 24.18 points or 0.08 percent from the previous day’s close at 28,693.99 points.

Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi today called upon the Dalits to unite and strengthen their position in the society.

Speaking at Darbhanga during his two-day inspection visit, Manjhi said, “We all Dalits belong to one family. We should not differentiate between one another. If Dalits, Mahadalits, backwards, extremely backwards and Pasmanda Muslims unite, it will strengthen their position in the society.

Pasmanda Muslims are backward Muslims.

Acute shortage of bone marrow donors, says AIIMS research dean

At least 1.25 lakh patients require bone marrow transplants every year but only 500 are fortunate to go through the process as there is a dearth of donors in the country, Research dean of AIIMS Narendra Mehra said here today and appealed the youth to come forward for the noble cause.

Bone marrow is required to help patients with blood cancer and other disorders.

“There is a dearth of bone marrow in India as it needs 1.25 lakh bone marrow transplants every years due to acute shortage of donors,” Mehra said.

Cong may not revive under current leadership: Venkaiah Naidu

Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said BJP will win majority of seats in states of Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir where Assembly elections are being held.

He also targetted the Congress leadership saying the “defeated party” may not revive under them.

“BJP will also emerge victorious in upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar and West Bengal. The party is also planning to penetrate into south and the northeast,” Naidu said addressing party workers after launching the BJP membership drive here.

Vettori puts off decision after Hughes tradegy

The 35-year-old staged a comeback in Test cricket after an injury gap of 28 months in the third and final Test in Sharjah, a match overshadowed by Hughes’s tragedy.

Hughes passed away on Thursday after being hit on the head by a bouncer in a first class match in Sydney.

China refuses British MPs entry to Hong Kong

A group of British lawmakers investigating Britain’s relations with Hong Kong have been told China will not allow them into the former colony, the MPs said today.

The Foreign Affairs Committee, a panel of lawmakers who scrutinise the Foreign Office’s work, is looking into Britain’s relations with the Chinese special administrative region 30 years on from the 1984 Joint Declaration, which set out the terms of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong.

Richard Ottaway, who chairs the cross-party panel, said he would tomorrow call for an emergency debate in parliament on the situation.

Ram Rahim’s Dera Sacha Sauda under scanner

After Sant Rampal, Gurmeet Ram Rahim of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect has come under the scanner.

While hearing a case relating to Rampal, the Punjab and Haryana High Court observed on Friday that activities of the Sirsa-based sect should be monitored periodically by the top brass of Haryana, including government and police.

The court also observed that there was a need to carry out searches inside the Dera premises to recover any illegal arms and ammunition in order to prevent any bloody confrontation in the future similar to the one witnessed during the operation against Rampal.

Khattar vows to eliminate corruption from administration

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today said his government is committed to completely eliminate corruption at all levels of administration.

To begin with, government has decided to make all registries of immovable properties available online.

Khattar was addressing a gathering after inaugurating newly built Community Centre at Sector-28 Panchkula.

The Centre has been constructed at a cost of over Rs 1.17 crore over an area of two acres of land.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje launched the ambitious ‘Adarsh Aanganbari Kendra’ for women and child development in Ajmer today.

Raje launched the Kendra at Mochi Basti in Topadara area of Dargah city and inaugurated a Community Computer and Projector, saying experts from IIT Mumbai would impart ‘smart education’ to children of the Kendra, a CMO spokesman said quoting her.

French floods kill five as nearly 3,000 evacuated

The worst flooding in southern France has claimed five lives and forced almost 3,000 people to evacuate their homes, officials said today.

The latest victim was a 73-year-old man who died of heart failure in Rivesaltes, in the Pyrenees-Orientales region, when trying to force his car through a big dip in the road that was flooded.

Along the banks of the Agly river in the same region, some 2,000 people had been evacuated by today, the government office there said.

Woman constable found dead at residence

A woman constable was found dead at her residence here under mysterious circumstances, the police said.

The deceased, identified as Anita Chand (30), was found hanging at her bedroom this morning. Her husband, who stays in the same official quarter in Sector-13, informed the police.

The constable was immediately taken to IGH by her husband Santosh Bit, who works as teacher in the local Delhi Public School.

Chand, who hails from Balasore, was married two years ago.

ISIS not fighting a holy war: Majeed tells NIA

Areeb Majeed, suspected member of terror outfit Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has revealed the names of the local contacts, who allegedly provided him the logistics to join the group to take part in the battle in Iraq, NIA officials said today.

Majeed also disclosed how he was completely sidelined by the terror group as he had been asked to carry out menial tasks like cleaning toilets or providing water to those on the battlefield, instead of being pushed into the warzone.

Indian-origin Israeli cricket umpire dies after being hit by ball

Hillel Awaskar, an Indian-origin international umpire and former captain of Israel’s cricket team, has died after being hit in the neck by a ball during a league match in this coastal city, just two days after tragic death of an Australian player in similar circumstances.

“The batsman had struck hard. The fast ball first hit the stumps, got deflected and hit Awaskar on his neck yesterday. He collapsed on the ground,” one of the players, Yona, said.

Qaeda rocket attack kills 3 Yemeni troops

Al-Qaeda militants have killed three soldiers with a rocket in Yemen’s eastern province of Hadramawt, a security official said today.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) confirmed on Twitter it “targeted an army vehicle… Heading from Shibam to Seyun in Hadramawt, destroying it and killing the three soldiers on board”.

The attack using rocket-propelled grenades took place late yesterday, the security official said.

Al-Qaeda is active in southern and eastern Yemen, especially in Hadramawt where the authority of the central government is weak.

Sidhu sees hope for BJP in high turnout in JK polls
