ICC announces schedule of warm-up matches for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced the complete schedule of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, including match start times and warm-up matches.

A total of 14 non-ODI warm-up matches will be played across Adelaide, Christchurch, Melbourne and Sydney from 8 to 13 February, with host and four-time former world champion Australia taking on reigning world champion India at Adelaide Oval on the first day.

Scholars’ group in Libya calls for defying Ansar Al-Sharia

A scholars’ group in Libya urged the army, police and citizens in general to stand against the Ansar Al-Sharia group and their diktat.

In a statement released Monday, the Libya Scholars League condemned the Takfiri group’s calls for killing Muslims who do not adopt their thoughts, MENA news agency reported.

It urged citizens not to cover up the acts of such groups, and said whoever commits such acts would be a partner of their criminal actions.

Ansar Al-Sharia is a Islamist militant group that advocates the implementation of Sharia laws across Libya.

BJP demands probe into AAP funding

The Delhi unit of the BJP Monday demanded a probe into the funding of the Aam Aadmi Party and said a party delegation will Tuesday meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to lodge a complaint.

“All those who donated to Aam Aadmi Party’s fund-raising event held recently should be probed by the income tax department. The party should post the names of each donor along with the amount donated on its website,” Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentarian Ramesh Bidhuri said.

The AAP Sunday raised over Rs.50 lakh at a fund-raising lunch organised by the party’s traders’ wing.

Man run over by jeep

A 28-year-old man was crushed to death by a jeep in Haryana Monday. Police said they were hunting for eight men who are accused of murdering the victim.

Subhash, a farmer from Patli village near Farrukhnagar, was mowed down over personal rivalry, a police officer said.

“The killing was caught on CCTV cameras installed on the main gate of a farm house where the incident took place,” the officer said. “The accused used the vehicle as a weapon.”

Police said they were looking for the guilty, two of who were identified as Harish and Vikas.

TS Govt approves 25.68 lakh pensioners

The Telangana Government has approved about 25.68 lakh applications that it received for Old Age, Physically Handicapped and other pensions.

The applications were given nod during a review meeting held by Finance Minister Etala Rajender and Panchayat Raj Minister K Tarakarama Rao at the State Secretariat here on Monday. The officials have been directed to release the pension for the months of October and November among 25,68,392 beneficiaries between December 10 and 15th. The District Collectors have also been asked to release the list of pensioners at the Panchayat Level.

1,232 killed in Iraq violence in November: UN

A total of 1,232 Iraqis were killed and 2,434 injured in terrorist attacks and violence across Iraq in November, according to a statement issued Monday by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The statement said that 936 civilians, including 61 policemen, and 296 Iraqi security forces personnel were killed, while 1,826 others, including 71 policemen, were wounded. An additional 608 security members were wounded in terrorist and violent acts during the month.

Congress accuses BJP of U-turns on poll promises

The Congress Monday accused the BJP government of making repeated U-turns during the six months it has been in power.

Congress general secretary Ajay Maken released a booklet listing 25 U-turns that the party said the government has made vis-a-vis the stand the Bharatiya Janata Party took on issues when it was in opposition.

“This government has made 25 U-turns in the last around 180 days. That’s an average of one U-turn every seven to eight days,” Maken said.

Pak facing more security threats from non-state actors: Sharif

Pakistan opened its biggest arms exhibition today with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif saying that the threat to national security had multiplied with the emergence of non-state actors, including terrorists and computer hackers.

Inaugurating the four-day biennial International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2014 here, Sharif said that a modern, well-equipped and properly trained military is a necessary requirement for defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and combating terrorism.

Hughes’ adopted home Adelaide to host Ind-Aus series-opener

Ending days of speculation, the first Test between India and Australia was today rescheduled for December 9 here at the adopted home ground of late batsman Phillip Hughes, whose tragic death left the host country devastated.

“The series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will now commence in Adelaide on the revised date of Tuesday 9 December,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

The second Test in Brisbane will start on December 17, followed by Melbourne on December 26 and the final match in Sydney, starting January 6.

Four of marriage party killed in Bengal

At least four members of a marriage party were killed and seven others grievously injured Monday when the vehicle they were travelling in met with an accident in West Bengal’s Siliguri, police said.

The accident happened in Matigara in Siliguri when the vehicle, with 15 people returning from a marriage ceremony, collided with another vehicle.

According to Siliguri Deputy Police Commissioner O.G. Pal, of the seven injured, the condition of three was critical.

Palestinian woman stabs Israeli man, shot at by soldiers

A Palestinian woman stabbed an Israeli civilian with a knife in the West Bank Monday morning and was shot and seriously wounded by security forces, Israeli media and the military reported.

Earlier media reports said the woman stabbed an Israeli soldier and was shot and killed.

The incident took place near a central junction in Gush Eztion, a settlement south of Jerusalem, used daily by thousands of commuters, Xinhua reported. The suspected assailant emerged from a vehicle before launching the attack.

P.K. Gupta new Haryana chief secretary

Senior IAS officer P.K. Gupta Monday took over as the new chief secretary of Haryana.

Gupta, a 1981-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was the additional chief secretary, revenue and disaster management and consolidation department, till now.

He replaces Shakuntla Jakhu whose extended tenure of three months after retirement ended Sunday.

Gupta said that his priority would be “complete transparency and time-bound implementation of all government policies”.

GHMC panel approves construction of new houses at Indiranagar

The Standing Committee of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Monday gave approval to the construction of 176 new houses at Indiranagar of Khairtabad mandal.

The new houses will be constructed in G+3 pattern with an estimated cost of Rs 16.95 crore in place of three blocks of 72 houses and existing AC sheet houses which are in dilapidated condition. By giving administrative sanction, the Standing Committee has sent its recommendation to the State Government for final approval.

Haryana to honour woman who shot bus assault video

The Haryana government Monday announced that it will honour the woman passenger who shot the daring incident of two girls taking on three youths who were trying to molest them in a Haryana Roadways bus.

The woman passenger, who is said to be pregnant, was the only one, among the passengers, to object to the indecent behaviour of the three youth with the two college-going sisters. The youth had started harassing her too.

No other passenger in the bus, including men, helped the two girls or the woman.

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie was reportedly involved a minor car accident on her way back home from screening of her latest directorial venture ‘Unbroken’ in Beverly Hills.

The tires of the vehicle popped after her chauffeured black SUV slipped on the wet road and hit a curb on Sunday, November 30, reported Aceshowbiz.

“The car slammed into the curb at a significant speed. Angelina must have wondered if they hit another car. It was pretty bad – the tire exploded and it’s amazing nothing worse happened to the car. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has whiplash,” an eyewitness said.

1984 riots case: accused serving life term gets interim bail

The Delhi High Court today granted 45-day interim bail to a retired naval officer serving life term along with two others in a case relating to a 1984 anti-Sikh riots incident in which five members of a family were killed.

A bench of justices Pradeep Nandrajog and Mukta Gupta freed convict Captain Bhagmal on interim bail on condition that he will furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 with one surety of the like amount.

The court granted the relief after 86-year-old Bhagmal sought three months interim bail, saying he needs to undergo surgery for “enlarged prostate cancer”.

Taiwanese government resigns after defeat in local elections

Taiwaness Prime Minister Jiang Yi-hua and his entire government resigned Monday following the ruling party Kuomintang’s crushing defeat in local elections where it won only six of the 22 county-level divisions.

The prime minister considered the results of Saturday’s elections to be a vote of no confidence against his government and presented his resignation to President Ma Ying-jeou, who immediately accepted it.

Jiang will lead a caretaker government until the president appoints a new prime minister who will then appoint a new cabinet, according to the country’s constitution.

NATO scrambles air defences 400 times to intercept Russian jets

NATO has had to scramble air defences around 400 times this year in response to “increased” Russian air activity, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Monday.

“Russia’s air activity over the past year increased 50 percent, compared with 2013,” Stoltenberg said, ahead of a meeting of the NATO foreign ministers in Brussels Dec 2-3.

The NATO chief acknowledged that training flights of Russian military planes in the international airspace are not usually considered to violate the international norms.

Forty arrested as Hong Kong clashes continue

Forty people were arrested Monday in Hong Kong during clashes between hundreds of police officers and pro-democracy demonstrators who tried to surround government buildings the previous night in a new phase of the two month-long protests.

Hundreds of people thronged Admiralty, the biggest protest site, Monday morning where demonstrators had been trying to block access to the main government buildings, among them the parliament and the office of the chief executive, since Sunday.
