Four dead in Delhi car accident

Four people died Monday and five were injured when their car rammed into a tree in Delhi, police said.

All the nine victims were of the same family. The accident occurred in Kanjhawala area of west Delhi when the car driver lost control of the vehicle and it hit a tree.

The four people died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to a hospital.

The dead were identified as Sanjay (35), Sangeeta (26), Sonu (30) and Abhishek (seven).

Promoting waterways top priority: Gadkari

Promoting water transport is the highest priority of the government, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said Monday, as the Rajya Sabha passed two bills to amend the merchant shipping act.

“Water transport is the highest priority for government. If road transport costs Rs.15, railways cost Rs.1, waterways cost just Rs. 0.50. Yet we have been subsidising and promoting the most expensive transport,” Gadkari said in the Rajya Sabha before moving The Merchant Shipping (Amendment) Bill, 2013, and The Merchant Shipping (Second Amendment) Bill, 2013 for passage.

Parliament passes IIIT bill

Any decision on education policy will be in tune with constitution, Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani said Monday as parliament passed a bill to bring four institutes of information technology under the ambit of a single authority.

The Indian Institutes of Information and Technology (IIIT) Bill, 2014, passed by Rajya Sabha Monday, seeks to provide the four existing IIITs an independent statutory status and proposes to declare them as institutes of national importance to enable them to grant degrees to their students.

Haryana constable arrested for trying to snatch car

A Haryana Police constable was arrested for trying to snatch a car from a Gurgaon resident, police said Monday.

Constable Bhupinder, posted at Rajendra Park police station, was arrested for trying to snatch the car from Pradeep Kumar, a resident of Gagga Vihar.

Pradeep Kumar, who has a shop near the Daulatabad flyover, was returning home Nov 28, when Bhupinder – then not in police uniform – and his friend Bijander stopped him and tried to snatch his car.

Commissioner of Police Navdeep Singh ordered an inquiry after Pradeep Kumar filed a complaint.

Bill in Parliament likely this week to repeal obsolete laws

Government is set to bring a new bill in Parliament this week to repeal another set of obsolete laws, including Railways Appropriation Acts, which have outlived their utility.

The Law Ministry has already identified 892 Appropriation Acts of the Finance Ministry and the Railway Ministry which can be repealed.

While the Railway Ministry has given a go-ahead to the Law Ministry to repeal its set of old Appropriation Acts, the Finance Ministry is in the process of taking a call on the issue.

Delhi church gutted in mysterious fire, probe on

A Catholic church in Delhi was gutted under mysterious circumstances Monday, police said.

The caretakers of the church have alleged the involvement of some unidentified men in the fire. Police have not ruled out any possibility and have begun a probe.

The blaze was noticed around 7.15 a.m. at the Saint Sebastian’s Church in east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden area by a chowkidar (guard) who informed the Delhi Fire Service and the caretakers.

Conflict with Maoists a political issue, claims Naxal sympathizer

Naxal sympathiser Varavara Rao on Monday claimed that the Centre’s conflict with Maoist forces in Central India is a political rather than a law and order issue, adding that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been sent in to protect the interests of corporate entities.

Rao was reacting to reports of 13 CRPF personnel being killed in a Maoist ambush.

A day after BJP president Amit Shah vowed to uproot the Trinamool Congress from West Bengal, the state’s ruling party Monday hit out at the BJP and termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi an “NRI”.

Countering Shah’s Sunday rally in the city, Trinamool parliamentarian and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee described the BJP as the “Bharatiya Joker Party”.

Haryana to honour brave sisters, woman; accused in jail

The Haryana government Monday said it will honour the two sisters who fought three youths who harassed them on a bus as well as a woman who shot the episode on her mobile telephone.

The three molesters — Deepak, Mohit and Kuldeep — were arrested Sunday evening. A court in Rohtak Monday sent them to judicial custody for five days.

The woman passenger, said to be pregnant, was the only one among the passengers who objected to the indecent behaviour of the youths and later captured the harassment of the young women on her mobile phone.

Suspected Ebola patient held at Karachi airport

A suspected Ebola patient was detained by health officials at Karachi airport Monday.

According to media reports, the 47-year-old passenger arrived in Karachi from Liberia via Doha and appeared to be in a poor health condition.

After a brief medical assessment, the suspected patient was sent to the Jinnah Hospital, while his blood samples were sent to Islamabad for testing, The Nation reported.

Earlier in Faisalabad, a patient suspected to be affected by Ebola was later found to be affected instead, by hepatitis C and also by dengue hemorrhagic fever and died.

Auto sales surge on lowering fuel prices

Most of the Indian auto-makers Monday reported healthy sales last month on the back of surge in consumer sentiment and lowering fuel prices.

With international crude oil prices going below $70 a barrel, Indian retailers have recently cut petrol and diesel prices. Prices of both the fuels have been reduced by three rupees in November itself.

India’s passenger car market leader Maruti Suzuki reported an increase of 19.5 percent in its November sales, which stood at 110,147 units up from 92,140 units in Nov 2013.

Telangana Govt to disburse pensions from Dec 10

Telangana Government would disburse social security pensions under the ‘Asara’ (support) scheme from December 10 to 15, Panchayat Raj and IT Minister K T Rama Rao said today.

Rao, who held a review on the scheme here, asked the District Collectors to release the first list of 25,68,392 beneficiaries immediately.

The pension amount for the months of October and November this year would be given together, an official release quoted him as saying.

An Iranian foreign exchange trader, on condition of anonymity, told Efe news agency that the dollar was trading at 32,400 rials and rose slightly Tuesday and Wednesday last week, but began to rise rapidly Thursday and reached 34,750 rials.

Zonal strike to hit banking this week

The United Forum of Banking Unions (UFBU) will go ahead with its relay zonal strikes in various parts of India starting Tuesday to press for wage revision, a union leader said Monday.

“The deputy chief labour commissioner in Mumbai convened a meeting between the banking union and Indian Banks Association. The discussions ended in a stalemate. We shall continue with our planned agitation,” V. Utagi, senior vice president of the All Indian Bank Employees Union, told IANS after the talks.

Lufthansa cancels 1,350 flights due to pilots’ strike

German airline Lufthansa has canceled some 1,350 flights due to a strike by its pilots that began Monday and is set to last until Tuesday morning, affecting an estimated 150,000 passengers.

The walkout was announced Sunday by the Vereinigung Cockpit Union after the collapse Friday of the latest round of negotiations between the management of the world’s largest airline and the union, which wants to change the early retirement system for pilots.

According to figures presented by the airline in late October, eight strikes by pilots since March have cost the company nearly $211 million.

Five burnt bodies found in Mexico

Five burnt bodies were found over the weekend in Chilapa de Alvarez, a town in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, police chief Job Encarnacion Cuenca said.

Police received a call around 8.40 p.m. Saturday that an SUV was on fire about three km from Chilapa de Alvarez, Cuenca told Efe news agency.

Officers found five bodies that had been set on fire with straw in the vehicle, the police chief said.

The bodies may be those of five businessmen who disappeared last week, security officials said.

Changes in Hyd Metro route alignment to extend length by 3 km

The proposed changes in alignment of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) are likely to increase the length of the metro rail project by around 3.2 km on one of the three corridors, a top official said today.

L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH), the concessionaire, is developing the 72-km elevated metro rail project here with three corridors and 66 stations.

IS may possesss nuclear material stolen from Iraq: report

Islamic State terror group may have developed a nuclear device by using radioactive uranium stolen from Iraq’s Mosul University after seizing control of the city last June, according to a British media report.

Militants boasted of the device on social media, with one even commenting on the destruction such a bomb would wreak in London, four months after the chemical went missing from Mosul University, Mirror newspaper reported.

One of the extremists making online threats to the West is British explosives expert Hamayun Tariq, who fled his home in the UK for the Middle East in 2012.

Chhattisgarh: 13 CRPF personnel killed in Maoist attack

An attack by Maoist forces on Monday left 13 Central Reserve Police Force (CRP) personnel of paramilitary unit dead, including two officers in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.

According to reports, the Maoist forces are also understood to have used local villagers as a human shield against retaliatory fire.

We have many operations in that area. Among those killed were a deputy commandant and an assistant commandant. The firing has now stopped in that area,” CRPF ADG ( Maoist Operations) RK Vij told the media.

Train kills mother, daughter

A speeding train crushed a 40-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter near the Dasna jail here Monday.

Police said the woman was on her way to meet her husband, Mohammad Iliyas, an inmate at the Dasna prison, with her daughter when the incident took place.

The woman was crossing a railway crossing on foot when she saw a goods train from Delhi approaching her.

As the mother and daughter jumped on another track, they were crushed by the Garib Rath train and cut to pieces, a police officer said.
