10 killed in Nigeria market bombing

At least 10 people were killed Monday in twin bomb blasts at a market in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri, the capital of northeastern Borno state, media reported.

The two bombs went off at mid-morning in the same place where another two explosions had killed 35 people last week in an attack carried out by female suicide bombers.

The attack was likely carried out by suicide bombers, a witness said.

UN chief calls for joint efforts to end AIDS by 2030

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Monday called on world leaders to work together to end AIDS by 2030, saying the fast track approach launched last week by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS will enable the world to reach the bold goal.

The fast track strategy outlines a set of targets that would need to be reached by 2020, including 90 percent of people living with HIV knowing their HIV status; 90 percent of people who know their HIV-positive status on treatment; and 90 percent of people on treatment with suppressed viral loads, according to Xinhua.

NATO to launch non-combat mission in Afghanistan

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg Monday said the international military alliance would launch a non-combat mission in Afghanistan in January next year.

Stoltenberg said the mission named “Resolute Support” aimed to train, advise and assist Afghan security forces, Xinhua reported.

“It reflects the progress we have made together with great sacrifice. And it will enable Afghanistan to build on that progress,” Stoltenberg said.

The NATO agreed in Wales to open a new chapter in its partnership with Afghanistan, as its combat mission in the country comes to a close by the year end.

Security in place for 2nd phase assembly polls in J-K

50,000 ‘ghost soldiers’ in Iraqi army, says PM

The Iraqi army has been paying salaries to at least 50,000 soldiers who do not exist, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said.

A preliminary investigation into “ghost soldiers” whose salaries are being drawn but who are not in military service, revealed the tens of thousands of false names on defence ministry rolls, Washington Post quoted Abadi as telling the Iraqi parliament Sunday.

Follow-up investigations are expected to uncover “more and more”, he added.

‘Ebola vaccine showing promising results’

Two Ebola vaccines undergoing clinical trials have shown promising results and would be deployed in January 2015 to West African countries affected by the epidemic, a scientist from Oxford University said Monday.

Speaking at a conference of African Immunologists in Nairobi, Adrian Hill, director of Oxford University’s Jenner Institute, said the two vaccines will re-energise the fight against Ebola, Xinhua reported.

2nd sarpanch attacked in Shopian in 2 days, condition critical

Suspected militants tonight shot at and critically injured a sarpanch who joined PDP earlier in the day in the second attack on a village head in Shopian district of Kashmir Valley in as many days.

The attack by militants on Shiraz Ahmad Bhat–who was earlier affiliated to ruling National Conference–took place in Shigan area, police said.

It happened on the eve of the second phase of the five-phase Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Shopian goes to polls in the fourth phase on December 14.

Malaysia becomes full member of MH17 joint probe team

Malaysia has been accepted as the full member of the MH17 Joint Investigation Team, Malaysia’s Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail said Monday.

Abdul Gani said this notification was given by the Dutch National Public Prosecutor’s Office in its letter dated Nov 28, Xinhua reported.

The Joint Investigation Team initially comprised of the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium and Ukraine. Malaysia has called on the team to include its investigators in the probe instead of being just participants from time to time.

Mother, daughter run over by train in Ghaziabad

A mother and her five-year-old daughter were on Monday run over by a speeding Delhi-bound train at Dasna Jail Railway level crossing, when they were trying to cross the railway track.

The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old Saira and her minor daughter Nida, Railway Police Inspector Pankaj Lavania said.

The incident took place when Saira, along with her daughter, was heading towards Dasna District Jail to meet her husband Ilyas, who is lodged there in a rape case of a four-month-old girl.

Haryana CM to find solution to Delhi’s water problem

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar agreed to find a solution to the long-standing water-sharing issue with Delhi after Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu at a meeting Monday urged Khattar and Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung to resolve the matter.

“We shall very shortly take a positive decision in the best interests of the people of Delhi and Haryana,” Khattar told reporters here.

Khattar’s statement comes close to the heels of his refusal to supply water to Delhi through the Munak canal.

67 killed in clashes with IS militants in Iraq

A total of 67 people, including 15 border guards, were killed in clashes with Islamic State (IS) militants across Iraq Monday, as the Iraqi forces recaptured seven villages in the country’s east, security sources said.

In the western province of Anbar, 15 border guards were killed and five others injured when dozens of IS militants attacked their headquarters in al-Waleed crossing near the Syrian border, a provincial security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
