China punishes internet firms for spreading porn

China’s ministry of culture Tuesday announced a list of internet firms, including Tencent and Baidu, which are suspected of spreading pornography and gambling.

Mobile game platforms run by the two firms and nine other internet companies were alleged to be involved in pornography, gambling and violence, Xinhua reported citing a ministry statement.

The statement also chastised comic and animated products on 21 websites provided by companies, including China Telecom and Tencent, for containing bloody, terror and violent content.

Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu joins BJP

Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu Tuesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), promising to work for the poor of the country.

Joining the BJP in the presence of party chief Amit Shah here, Sanu said he was an admirer of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and wanted to work under his leadership.

Sanu also expressed a desire to work for the country’s poor and the underprivileged.

Jet commences roll out of full service product

Passenger carrier Jet Airways Tuesday commenced the roll out of its full service product on all flights across its domestic network.

“I firmly believe that this move to a full service carrier will help Jet Airways redefine the service paradigm in Indian skies,” Cramer Ball, chief executive Jet Airways said.

According to the company, it has started to offer guests two product classes in full service mode with a complimentary dining aboard all domestic flights.

Court puts off Mohamed Morsi trial

Cairo Criminal Court postponed to Thursday the trial of ousted President Mohamed Morsi and 14 other co-defendants of the Muslim Brotherhood group, who are involved in the case of killing and attempting to kill peaceful protesters in November 2012, state-tun MENA news agency reported.

Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, was toppled in a military coup led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s current president who was then the army commander.

Teenager sodomised by three in Gurgaon, two arrested

A 16-year-old boy was sodomised by three people in a travel company’s office here. Two of the accused have been arrested, police said Tuesday.

Narender Kumar and Jitender were sent to judicial custody by a court here Tuesday. The third accused, Jaswant, is yet to be arrested.

The three accused worked as drivers along with the boy at the office in Sector 51, police officer Vijay Kumar told IANS.

The boy, who hailed from a town in Madhya Pradesh, was admitted to a hospital in Gurgaon. He was later referred to a hospital in Delhi as his condition deteriorated, he said.

Polling in J-K crosses 50 percent mark

The polling in the second phase of the legislative assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday crossed the halfway mark as of 2 pm, with 53.2 percent of the voters in the state participating in the democratic process.

Among the best performing regions were the Gool Arnas, Gulabgarh and Uddhampur constituencies of the state, all three seats seeing over 60 percent of their voters cast their ballots.

However, the worst performing constituency was the Home Shalibugh, which falls under the Kulgam region of the state, seeing only 27.01 percent of its voters turn up.

Punjab’s traditional craft inscribed on Unesco list

The traditional brass and copper craft of utensil making from Punjab has been inscribed on Unesco’s 2014 Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, an official statement said Tuesday.

This utensil making among the thathera of of Jandiala Guru community is the 11th element which has been inscribed in the list.

“This craft constitutes the traditional techniques of manufacturing brass and copper utensils in Punjab,” said an statement from the culture ministry.

CDC denies possibility about Ebola spreading through airborne transmission

The director of the airborne transmission (CDC) has denied possibility that Ebola is spread through airborne transmission saying that the virus only spreads through direct contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids and does not spread in any other way.

According to the Washington Times, the Obama administration had also said yesterday that the virus wreaking havoc in West Africa is unlikely to mutate and spread by air.

CDC said that changes resulting in new forms of transmission would need multiple mutations over a very long period.

Now, technology that takes pizza orders by reading people’s minds

A new technology has been recently introduced, which allows diners to order pizza with just their eyes, as the digital menu can reportedly read consumers’ minds .

Pizza Hut, who has been testing the technology since October in UK, has named it “the world’s first subconscious menu,” which has a special eye-tracking tablet, the Washington Post reported.

The digital menu shows diners a canvas of 20 toppings and builds their pizza, from one of 4,896 combinations, based on which toppings they looked at longest. To try again, a diner can glance at a “restart” button.

‘Heavy fighting’ rages between Ukrainian forces, Russian rebels at Donetsk airport

Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko has said that “heavy fighting” is raging between its troops and Russian rebels backed by Russian special forces at Donetsk airport in the eastern part of the country.

Ukraine is holding Donetsk airport in spite of an assault by pro-Russian rebels, reported the BBC.

However, the military spokesperson denied previous reports that the old terminal, which is inflicted with violence currently, had been blown up.

The Russian separatists began a fresh assault recently and the airport just outside the city has been battered by shelling for months.

Kazakhstan views India as a key player in global, regional affairs

India, Kazakhstan’s Ambassador-designate Bulat Sarsenbayev said, has the world’s respect, and is seen as one of the key players in political, economic, global and regional affairs.

Excise hike on petrol and diesel will benefit corporates: Yechury

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday said the hike on excise duty of petrol and diesel prices by the Centre will benefit only oil companies, corporate and multinationals.

“The benefit of slashed prices of petrol and diesel in international market has not been penetrated to the common man. Here, the prices have slashed down by less than Re 1. The amount of increased excise duty will go to industrialists. All the benefits will go to corporates, foreign companies and oil companies but not to the public,” Yechury told ANI.

China, Maldives sign agreement on key bridge project

China and the Maldives have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a pre-feasibility study of a proposed bridge connecting the international airport to capital Male, an official said Tuesday.

Housing Minister Mohamed Muiz signed the MoU on behalf of the Maldivian government while the principal secretary of the Economic and Commercial Councilors Office, Yung Vunzeong, signed on behalf of the Chinese government, Xinhua reported.

Sensex plunges, as RBI keeps interest rate status-quo

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets plunged 116 points or 0.40 percent, as the central bank decided to keep key interest rates unchanged in its fifth bi-monthly policy review of the current fiscal.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan said that a change in the monetary policy at the current juncture will be premature and that he will wait for the decrease in inflation to continue.

However, he also mentioned the possibility of a rate cut early next year if the current downturn in inflation momentum continues.

Air India takes cost cutting measures

Debt-ridden national carrier Air India has taken cost-cutting measures to reduce its financial burden and hike revenue inflows.

According to Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma, the national carrier has been involved with route rationalisation for stopping operations on loss making routes.

Sharma informed the Rajya Sabha that Air India has been phasing out old fleet, which in turn will lead to reduced maintenance costs.

The Andhra Pradesh government has earned Rs.1,000 crore from the global e-tender-cum-e-auction for sale and export of 4,160 metric tonnes of confiscated red sanders logs, officials said.

Taiwan’s Ma to resign as Kuomintang chairman

Taiwan’s leader Ma Ying-jeou announced Tuesday he will step down as chairman of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, taking responsibility for the party’s poor showing in recent local elections.

Ma will submit his official resignation at a meeting of the KMT Central Standing Committee Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

The leader said that, as the KMT chairman, he would like to shoulder the responsibility for the party’s “unprecedented heavy defeat” in the elections held Saturday.

GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain expressed satisfaction over the performance of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation during his three-year tenure as the Mayor.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, the Mayor said that the GHMC was in a deficit of Rs 400 crore when he took over as the Mayor.
