Japanese newspaper apologises for referring to ‘comfort women’ as ‘sex slaves’ for two decades

The Daily Yomiuri and The Japan News have apologized for using inappropriate terms such as “sex slaves” while referring to “so-called comfort women” in 97 articles from February 1992 to January 2013.

Among articles that were translated from Yomiuri Shimbun and The Daily Yomiuri original stories related to the issue of “comfort women,” there were 85 articles that used the term “sex slave” and other words with the same meaning in an appropriate manner, reported The Japan Times.

Israel names new military chief of staff

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon Saturday evening appointed Major General Gadi Eizenkot as the 21st chief of staff of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

A statement by Ya’alon’s office said the appointment received the approval of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Xinhua reported.

Major General Yair Golan, who until recently headed the IDF’s Northern Command, which oversees forces positioned along the Syrian and Lebanese frontiers, has been appointed as the next deputy chief of staff, according to the statement.

Bombers may target Imran’s rally on Sunday: Pakistan intelligence

Pakistani intelligence agencies have warned that suicide bombers may target cricketer-turned- politician Imran Khan during a rally in Islamabad on Sunday.

According to an intelligence report submitted to the federal government, three banned organisations – Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jundallah and Jamaatul Ahrar – have plans to target Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan’s rally.

41 fall ill after gas leakage in Bhopal

At least 41 people fell ill Saturday following leakage of toxic gas from a chemical factory near the Madhya Pradesh capital, police said.

The gas leakage took place at the plant situated in the Mandideep industrial area in Raisen district, around 25 km from Bhopal.

Workers at the specialty organic factory complained of breathlessness following the gas leak Saturday evening, police officer S.S. Rathore told IANS.

They were taken to a hospital in Mandideep. The condition of three workers was said to be serious and they were shifted to Bhopal for further treatment.

High voter turn out in Bahrain parliamentary polls

Bahrain witnessed high voter turnout during second round of the parliamentary elections held Saturday, a top official said.

The Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission President and 2014 elections executive director Abdulla Al Buainain said the voting process was smooth and a good number of electorates participated, Xinhua reported.

The voting centres, he said, opened at 8 a.m. as voters cast their ballots to elect 34 parliamentary candidates and 21 municipal councillors.

Thai crown prince strips in-laws of royal name

Thailand’s Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn has directed the government to strip his wife’s family of their royally bestowed name after seven of her close relatives were held in a purge of officials allegedly involved in corruption, BBC reported Saturday.

Princess Srirasmi Akrapongpreecha is Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn’s third wife, and the pair married in 2001, .

The move is widely expected to be a first step to divorce.

Taiwan chief administrator resigns after party’s defeat

Taiwan chief administrator announced his resignation after the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) Party suffered a defeat in local elections held Saturday.

Jiang Yi-huah announced his decision at a press conference in the evening and it was approved by Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou, Xinhua reported.

The KMT Party won six county and city chief seats in Taiwan’s biggest-ever local elections, while the opposition Democratic Progressive Party landed 13 seats, according to the island’s electoral authorities.

Haryana Police team at Rampal’s Betul ashram for probe

A Haryana Police team visited arrested spiritual guru Rampal’s ashram in this Madhya Pradesh district to make enquiries after he revealed his followers had been given commando training there, police said Saturday.

According to police sources, the Haryana Police team was accompanied by local police and the state armed police as it went to the under-construction ashram in Urhdan area. The Haryana Police team also scrutinised documents of the ashram’s land.

Sarkozy wins UMP leadership with eye on Elysee Palace

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy Saturday won the race to the leadership of crisis-hit conservative party Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), a step crucial to bid for the presidency in 2017.

In a first test of his political comeback, Sarkozy won 64.5 percent of votes followed by his two former ministers Bruno Le Maire and Herve Mariton who collected 29.18 percent and 6.32 percent of votes respectively, Xinhua reported.

A total 155,851 of the party’s 268,231 members casted their online votes which started Friday evening.

Trinamool MP Srinjoy Bose in judicial remand till Dec 5

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Srinjoy Bose, nabbed in connection with the multi-croe rupee Saradha scam, was Saturday sent to judicial custody till Dec 5 by a city court after the CBI opposed his bail plea arguing the MP may try to influence witnesses.

Bose was arrested Nov 21 by the Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the Saradha scan, which took him into its custody.

While the CBI counsel pitched for sending Bose to jail custody, the MP pleaded for bail submitting he was ill and promised to comply with all conditions imposed by the judiciary.

TS Govt to seek public opinion on KG-PG free education

The Telangana Government has decided to seek public opinion to implement its promise of providing KG to PG free education.

The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao here on Saturday. Education Minister Jagadish Reddy and senior IAS officials including RK Meena, Shailaja, Pradeep Chandra, Jayesh Ranjan, Somesh Kumar, Narsing Rao, Sridhar and Smitha Sabharwal attended the meeting.

15 killed, 14 injured in terror attack in China’s Xinjiang

Fifteen people, including 11 “mobsters”, were killed and 14 others injured in a terrorist attack in China’s restive Xinjiang province today.

The attack occurred Shache County in the northwestern province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Tianshan news website said that the attackers used vehicles, knives and explosives in the assault. It also claimed that the dead included 11 of the attackers branded as “mobsters” by state media.

Hughes funeral to take place on Wednesday

The funeral of the deceased Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes will be held on December 3 in his home town of Macksville in northern New South Wales.

The service will be held in the sports hall of Macksville High School where Hughes was educated. It will be broadcast live by the Nine Network with provisions made for all other television networks, according to Cricket Australia.

ABC Local Radio and the Fairfax Radio Network will also broadcast the service live around the country. It will also be streamed live on Cricket Australia’s website and app.

Jordanian Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour Saturday said it is the duty of all Arabs and Muslims to stand up to terrorism and terrorist groups that tarnish the image of Islam, state media reported.

US model crowned Miss Model world in China

US model Shelynne Hoyt was crowned at the 26th Miss Model of the World International Grand Final Contest in Chinese city of Shenzhen Saturday.

Ukrainian model Anastasiya Sukh was the runner-up while Russian model Natalia Tcytko finished third.

The final results came after a round of show-up in ethnic clothing, swimsuits and evening dress.

A total of 61 models from as many countries and regions participated in the final contest.

The beauty pageant, original started in Turkey in 1988, has attracted the participation of over 10,000 models around the world over the past 26 years.

Israel’s foreign minister drafts regional peace plan

Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has drawn a plan for achieving peace between Israel and its neighbours which includes ceding land for a future Palestinian state and the transfer of Israeli Arabs to live in it.

It came amidst a series of crises that have threatened to dismantle the coalition government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent weeks, Xinhua reported.
