Irani stresses on benefits of ‘Know Your College’ portal

Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani, who inaugurated the European Higher Education Fair here on Sunday, lauded Joao Cravinho, the Ambassador of the European Union, for supporting the Indian initiative and highlighted the benefits of ‘Know Your College’ portal.

“I am glad that European Union Minister has considered supporting the Indian initiative. Additionally, if you go to the ‘Know Your College’ portal, first time in the independent Indian history we have 20,000 hours of video lecture facility which is available free of cost to our students,” Irani said.

Row over eve-teasing, senior kills junior

Row over eve-teasing between juniors and seniors led to the murder of junior. The incident occurred under Sultan Bazar Police station limits where a tug of war continued between juniors and seniors on the issue of a girl. On Saturday junior died in the attack of senior.

7-yr-old burns along garbage pile

A girl was charred to death along with garbage pile in Jawahar Nagar area. It is said that 7-year-old Kaveri, D/O Pramesh, R/O BM Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, who was a student, was playing near the dumping yard in her area. She went near the fire which was lighted into the garbage pile on November 4 and sustained serious burn injuries. She died while undergoing treatment. Police is investigating the case.

Infant mauled to death by stray dogs

Stray dogs mauled an infant to death at the outskirts of the city on Saturday. It is said that stray dogs mauled 4 month old baby girl who was left by unknown persons in the lane. Seeing the shocking and heartrending scene, locals immediately informed Mailardevpally police. Before the police could rush the baby to the hospital, the girl died in the dog’s attack.

Mother of MH17 victim takes Ukraine to human rights court

The mother of a victim of downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 has begun legal proceedings against Ukraine at the European Court of Human Rights, accusing Kiev of failing to close the country’s airspace, a German daily reported today.

The woman, who lodged her complaint at the Strasbourg-based court “last week”, is suing Ukraine for USD 1 million in damages for negligent homicide, the Bild newspaper said.

The Boeing 777 exploded over insurgent-held east Ukraine on July 17, killing all 298 on board, 193 of them Dutch. Four were German, according to the airline.

450-year-old Masjid Miyan Mashak is located at Purana Pul where a non-Muslim was selling photos of deities for the past two months, by setting up a temporary shop made of plastic and bamboos. Surprisingly the Masjid Committee was also silent on the matter. However locals reported Waqf Board about the development on which Special Officer Waqf Board Mr. Jalaluddin Akber sent a task force team to the spot. The man was told that he cannot sell the photos of deities by illegally occupying the Masjid land hence he was asked to vacate the land by himself. The man complied and vacated the land.

WHO team completes Pakistan Ebola assessment

A visiting World Health Organization (WHO) team has completed its assessment of Pakistan’s preparedness against the Ebola virus.

“The mission had provided technical support to assess the eventual venue of a patient coming from countries hit by the virus,” Dawn online quoted WHO country chief Michel Thieren as saying.

The mission reviewed measures to be put in place in six areas of concern associated with Ebola preparedness, including entry at airports to track the passenger’s contact and travel history, Thieren said Saturday.

UP to have country’s first highway patrol force

Uttar Pradesh government is going to introduce the country’s first highway patrol on NH-2 and NH-25 for which the personnel will be trained by New Zealand Police and the uniform will be designed by fashion designers.

With financial aid to the tune of Rs 250-crore from World Bank, a separate unit — Uttar Pradesh Highway Patrol (UPHP) — will be raised whose jurisdiction will be limited to the highways it patrols.

India offers scholarship to Afghan students

India offers around 1,000 scholarships every year to the Afghan students, which is sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The ICCR scholarship scheme for Afghanistan was launched in 2005.

At present, the Afghan students are pursuing courses in international studies, economics, bachelors’ degrees, B. Tech and many more programmes in various universities across India.

The ICCR provides 6,000 scholarships to foreign students from 30 countries, which are spread in more than 20 states and 120 educational institutions in India.

Modi switching to capitalist economy: DMK

Taking a swipe at the economic policy of the Narendra Modi government, DMK leader M K Stalin today said the country is moving away from a mixed to a capitalist economy with corporate honchos appearing set to get a “bonanza of sorts” and the poor a “pittance”.

“It appears that the path towards capitalist economy is being refurbished, switching from a mixed economy under the Modi government,” DMK Treasurer and former Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Stalin told PTI in an interview here.

Personalised vaccines for cancer a step closer

Researchers have developed a strategy to create personalised vaccines that spur the immune system to attack harmful tumours.

Scientists at the Washington University in the US are already evaluating personalised cancer vaccines in patients with metastatic melanoma in clinical trials.

The researchers are also working to use the vaccines against breast, brain, lung, head and neck cancers.

Additional trials are anticipated in the next couple of years.

In the new study, the scientists tested vaccines in computer simulations, cell cultures and animal models.

Climate Parliament asks govt to create green energy fund

Climate Parliament, a global network of legislators working to promote renewable energy, has urged the Urban Development Ministry to create a green energy fund to focus on utilisation of renewable energy in urban areas.

MP Vandana Chavan in a recent letter to Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the cell should coordinate directly with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for any potential integration of plans and policies.

Parliamentary election begins in Moldova

Parliamentary elections kicked off in Moldova Sunday as 20 political parties and blocs as well as four independents contend for 101 parliamentary seats.

Under the country’s electoral law, the threshold for parliamentary representation is six percent of the vote for individual parties, nine percent for political blocs consisting of two parties, 11 percent for blocs formed of three parties or more and 2 percent for independent candidates.

Arjen Robben scored once to give Bayern Munich a narrow 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin at the Olympic Stadium here.

Bayern almost dominated the first half and Robben scored the goal in the 27th minute Saturday, reports Xinhua.

Mark Strand, a Pulitzer Prize winner and former US poet laureate widely praised for his concentrated, elegiac verse, has died. He was 80.

Strand, whose works were translated into more than 30 languages, died yesterday morning at his daughter’s New York home from liposarcoma that had spread throughout his body, just weeks after entering hospice care, said his daughter, Jessica Strand.

“He was a funny, elegant, generous and brilliant man,” she said of her father. “A man who lived to work and to be with his friends and the people he loved.”

Media assault at Rampal ashram: PCI panel flays police tactics

A PCI-appointed panel looking into the journalists assault issue outside ‘godman’ Rampal’s ashram has observed that Haryana Police employed “unconstitutional” tactics to prevent media from doing its duty and recommended investigation by administrative officers into the episode.

In its report submitted to PCI, the four-member committee is learnt to have said that police and local administration failed to rise to the situation and resorted to “brute force” against media persons doing their duty.

Thane: Over 300 taken ill due to chemical waste in drain

As many as 300 residents of Ulhasnagar in Thane district reported symptoms such as burning sensation in the eyes, giddiness and breathing problems following release of a hazardous chemical in a drain in neighbouring Ambarnath today, police said.

Most of them were admitted to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar. While ten persons were still hospitalised, the rest were discharged, police said.

The condition of those ten persons was said to be stable.
