Hussain said if the government didn’t take immediate steps to root out the Daish/ISIS influence, mindset and extremists from Pakistan this menace would spread quickly and would be more dangerous than even al-Qaeda and Taliban.

Yemen’s Shiite rebels give president ultimatum

Yemen’s Shiite rebels, who are in control of the capital, gave the president 10 days starting from today to form a government, hinting at a takeover attempt if their demands are not met.

The Shiite group, also known as Houthis, rallied some 30,000 tribal leaders in Sanaa, where they delivered a communique warning President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi that “all revolutionary options are open” if he failed to form a government.

Peshmerga fighters enter Syrian border

Iraqi peshmerga fighters began entering the Syrian border town of Kobani where they were expected to join the battle against Islamist militants besieging the town, activists have said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Kobani-based activist Mustafa Bali last night said 10 vehicles carrying Iraqi peshmerga fighters and their weapons have entered the town. They said the Iraqi Kurdish force entered from an area west of the town near the strategic Tel Shair hill.

New drug to generate self-destruct process in lung cancer cells

A drug combination has been discovered which can trigger the self-destruct process in lung cancer cells.

Using lung cancer cells and mice the Cancer Research UK team, based at the UCL Cancer Institute scientists, showed that the combination of two drugs, called TRAIL and a CDK9 inhibitor, altered the molecular switches in the cell suicide process, hence forcing the cancer cells to self-destruct.

Mathrubhumi literary award for eminent Malayalam poet Sugathakumari

Eminent Malayalam poet and environmental campaigner Sugathakumari has been selected for the prestigious Mathrubhumi literary award.

The Mathrubhumi award, a prestigious literary prize in Malayalam, was announced on Friday by Mathrubhumi Managing Director M P Veerendrakumar and Managing Editor P V Chandran.

The award carries a prize of Rs two lakh, citation and memento.

Sugathakumari was chosen for the honour by a judging committee, comprising writers Vishnu Narayanan Namboodiri, Sachithanandan and M Leelavathi.​

Satellites helping fight against Ebola for first time ever

British built satellites are now being used for the first time ever to help fight against the Ebola disease, it has been revealed.

The technology has now been used to map the spread of the disease and help aid workers plan the location of key resources after they were activated by the International Charter for Space and Major Disaster., the Sky News reported.

Business Secretary Vince Cable visited Surrey Satellites Technology, near Guildford, which has been building satellites for more than 30 years and has been heavily involved with this new mission.

Burdwan blast: NIA announces cash reward for information on absconders

National Investigation Agency (NIA) has announced cash rewards for information leading to the arrest of 12 absconders in connection with the West Bengal’s Burdwan blast.

A cash reward of ten lakh rupees each against five absconders, five lakh rupees each for three accused and three lakh rupees for the remaining four suspects has been announced by the NIA.

All of them are alleged to be associated with banned terror outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). They were reportedly conspiring to target installations in Bangladesh.

Maruti Suzuki India sales dip 1.1% to 1,03,973 units in October

Country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) today reported a 1.1% decline in total sales in October at 1,03,973 units as against 1,05,087 units in the same month last year.

The company said its domestic sales rose by 1% during the month to 97,069 units as against 96,062 units in October, 2013.

Sales of mini segment cars, including M800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR, declined by 9.2 % to 35,753 units compared to 39,379 units in the year-ago month, MSI said in a statement.

China manufacturing growth slows in October: govt

Chinese manufacturing growth slowed in October, the government said today, as the world’s second-largest economy expands at its weakest pace in five years.

China’s official purchasing managers index (PMI), a measure of activity in the sector, came in at 50.8 last month, Xinhua news agency quoted the National Bureau of Statistics as saying.

The figure was lower than the 51.1 recorded in September and compared with the preliminary 50.4 figure in a private survey released by British bank HSBC on October 23.

Third victim of US school shooting dies: hospital

A 14-year-old US girl has died after being critically injured when a fellow high school student went on a shooting rampage last week, hospital officials have said.

“Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, known affectionately as Shay to her family and friends, passed away at Providence Regional Medical Centre as a result of severe injuries from last Friday’s school shooting,” the hospital said yesterday in reference to the assault in the northwestern state of Washington.

CM Fadnavis accused of riding without helmet

A complaint was filed on Friday in a Pune court against Devendra Fadnavis, the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra, alleging that he had violated the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act by riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet during the Assembly elections campaign.

A similar complaint was recently filed against union minister Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur.

The complaint against Fadnavis has been filed by Hemant Patil, president of `Desh Bachao Party’, a local outfit, at the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class at Shivaji Nagar, Pune, under sections 129 and 177 of Motor Vehicles Act.

World number one Novak Djokovic ended Britain number one Andy Murray’s winning streak by a straight-sets win in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters.

NDFB (S) militants hurl grenade in Assam

Suspected militants of National Democratic Front of Boroland- Songbijit ( NDFB-S) faction on October 25 hurled a hand grenade at a busy area in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

Five persons, including a tea garden official were injured and two vehicles were damaged.

Injured were immediately admitted in the hospital.

Sonia Gandhi not to attend Bukhari son’s anointment ceremony

Congress President Sonia Gandhi will not attend the controversial anointment ceremony of the son of Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari here next month.

Asked if Gandhi had received the Imam’s invite, Congress sources said they were not aware if any such invitation had come.

From Today, It’s Bengaluru, Not Bangalore

The Silicon City has a new name now. From Nov 1 onwards, Bangalore and other 11 cities in Karnataka will be called by their old Kannada names.

So Bangalore becomes Bengaluru, Mysore becomes Mysuru and more. This change comes on Kannada Rajyotsava, a day when Karnataka turns 68.

While the Karnataka government had proposed the move in 2006, the Central government cleared it only this month and a notification to this effect was issued last evening

The names of a total 12 cities and towns have been changed in consonance with their pronunciation in Kannada language.
