Four children abused in Goa everyday: NGO

Nearly four children are abused everyday in Goa and most of such offences remain unreported, as per an NGO working against child abuse.

“On an average four children are abused in Goa daily. As per government statistics, the number of cases are on the rise,” said Ashwini Verenkar, project director of El-Shaddai Charitable trust which runs Panaji-based NGO called SCAN.

The NGO, which has been active in rescuing children in distress, has found that several cases of abuse go unreported and children are abused mostly by the people known to them.

Four more polio cases found in Pakistan; tally jumps to 235

At least four new polio cases have been reported in Pakistan, taking the number of those affected this year to 235 with the county’s fight against the crippling disease showing no signs of improvement.

An official of the National Institute of Health in the capital confirmed the cases, saying three cases reported from Qilla Abdullah and Quetta in Balochistan and one from South Waziristan tribal region along Afghan border.

Bangladesh Railway Minister Mujibul Haque, 67, has married 29-year-old Honufa Akhter Rikta in the country’s Comilla District.

The wedding took place in the district’s Meerkhola Vilage, reports the Prothom Olo daily.

According to the daily, Haque signed the Kabin Nama (marriage document) at around 3 pm on Friday after paying Taka 5,00,001 as denmohor.

The wedding was attended by over 700 people from the minister’s side.

Apart from four reception gates, most of the intersections on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway were decorated to greet the bridegroom minister.

Bangalore today became Bengaluru synchronising with the state formation day -“Karnataka Rajyotsava”. In tandem, 11 other cities across Karnataka were also rechristened by the state government, casting away the anglicised names.

The new names have come into force after the state government issued a special gazette notification to effect the changes, giving them the distinct local flavour.

DJB switches back to Upper Ganga Canal for raw water supply

The annual repair/maintenance of the Upper Ganga Canal has been completed and Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar Plants of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) have resumed lifting raw water from the Upper Ganga Canal.

Both water treatment plants are expected to function at their optimum capacity, as the raw water will be available as required.

During the entire period of Annual repair/ maintenance of the Upper Ganga Canal, DJB maintained normal water supply to the areas, served by the two plants.

Dutch investigators find more human remains at MH17 crash site

Dutch investigators have reportedly found more human remains at the MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine.

The investigators were allowed to resume their search at the crash zone following a halt in the fighting between government forces and pro-Russian rebels.

According to News.com.au, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte released a statement confirming the team was again able to access the site and had recovered more human remains.

Remains of 289 of the 298 people aboard the Malaysia Airlines’ Boeing 777 have been recovered up till now.

A Royal Bengal tigress has given birth to two healthy twin cubs in a zoo in Jamshedpur, and is attracting visitors’ every day.

The big cat, Shanti, also gave birth to a cub, Dona, last year, while the twin cubs’ were born a couple of months back.

Shanti was also born in the same zoo, while the male tiger, Raghav, was brought from the zoo in Assam.

Best foreign short films to be screened at Kolkata fest
