Actress Sana Khan files case of cheating against media

The police today registered a case of cheating against a media consultant for allegedly duping actress Sana Khan of Rs 9 lakh by promising to get her two shanties in a slum which was about to be redeveloped.

The woman consultant had last week filed a complaint of assault against Khan.

“We have registered a case against the 40-year-old media consultant,” said an officer attached to the suburban Oshiwara police station.

Bank cheated of Rs.33 crore, five held

Five people have been arrested for swindling a private bank of Rs.33 crore on the pretext of taking loans against spurious gold ornaments, police said Saturday.

Vijay Manchanda, 55, his 20-year-old son Dushyant Manchanda, Ravinder Kumar, 40, Satrughan Nayak, 32, and Ram Prakash, 31 – all residents of Delhi – were arrested Friday after a complaint was filed against them by Muraleedharan C.M., the deputy general manager of Dhanlaxmi Bank.

Have agreed to few more films besides ‘Jazbaa’: Aishwarya

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who Saturday celebrated her 41st birthday, said she has signed few more films besides “Jazbaa”.

“Besides ‘Jazbaa’, I have also given okay and go ahead to few more scripts … the first one to roll on with ‘Jazbaa’. I though of making an announcement on that today but, I thought with due respect to the director and producer, it would be right for them to make an announcement,” she told media persons here.

However, Aishwarya said she can talk about “Jazbaa” as it is out in the news.

Venkaiah Naidu suggests strategy to implement Clean India drive

Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Saturday called for sustained campaign, voluntary participation and the role of NGO’s and private sectors for effective implementation of Clean India Campaign.

“Sustained campaign – continue the chain of nine; focus more on behavioural change – encourage voluntary public participation; and to recognize Urban Local Bodies, NGOs and Private Sector is significant for the success of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” Naidu said while reviewing the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission in the national capital.

Two held in Goa for possessing LSD, hashish

Two people have been arrested in a Goa beach village for possessing hashish and synthetic party drug LSD, valued at Rs.3.5 lakh, police said Saturday.

The drugs were found in a house in Anjuna village, notorious as a narco-tourism destination, during a raid conducted by the Goa Police anti-narcotics cell.

John Fernandes, 52, and Dulal Das, 43, were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Talks with BJP will continue, says Shiv Sena

As the uncertainty over whether former ally Shiv Sena would join the BJP government in Maharashtra persists, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party today said it was confident that “the talks between the two parties will continue in a positive manner”.

“Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had detailed discussion with BJP leaders Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley yesterday,” Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe said here.

“I am sure Sena and BJP representatives here will have positive talks,” she added.

‘ODI series a chance to test bench strength ahead of 2015 WC’

They may not have of an ideal preparation for the stop-gap five-ODI series against India but Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews today said that the short tournament would give the team’s think-tank an opportunity to assess the bench strength ahead of next year’s World Cup.

“There can be both positives and negatives. To look at the positives, this a chance to get our combination right and look at some of the guys who we think can be part of the World Cup,” Mathews said on the eve of the opening ODI between India and Sri Lanka here.

TDP 1st party to sign group personal accident plan for members

Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today signed an MoU with Oriental Insurance Company to extend a group personal accident policy for its active members, which is a first-of-its-kind initiative for any political party in the country.

Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh, who is heading the workers’ welfare wing, signed the pact with Oriental’s Chief Regional Manager Rajasekhar at the NTR Bhavan here.

Under the scheme, each active member of TDP will get a personal insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh in case of a fatal accident and Rs 50,000 in case of accidental injuries.

PM Modi’s radio programme ”Mann ki Baat” to be aired tomorrow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation through radio on Sunday and express his views on various issues. The programme named ‘Mann ki Baat’ will be aired on All India Radio network at 11 a.m. It will also be available on the website newsonair.nic.in. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s second address through radio. The first one was broadcast on October 3 this year. The Prime Minister had earlier sought suggestions from the people for his ”Mann ki Baat” programme. A separate forum was created on the website ”MyGov” to enable the citizens to share their views.

Telangana power crisis:CM says Centre “vengeful” towards state

Under fire from the TDP, ruling neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and opposition parties over his of way tackling power crisis in Telangana, its Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today dragged Centre into the issue accusing it of adopting a “vengeful attitude” towards his State.

“The Government of India that should ensure implementation of the (AP) Reorganisation Act has not been co-operating with the Telangana government. It is adopting a vengeful attitude towards us,” a CMO release quoted Rao as saying.

Foundation laid for world”s tallest statue in Gujarat

Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Friday laid the foundation of world”s tallest statue “Statue of Unity” of freedom fighter and leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel near River Narmada marking his 139th birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last year launched the construction of the world”s tallest statue, a Rs. 20,795.41 million project in honour of one of the country”s founding fathers. He launched the project to build the bronze-and-iron statue – which aims to be twice the height of the Statue of Liberty at 182 metres.

Uttar Pradesh launches nutrition mission

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav Saturday launched the State Nutrition Mission and said its progress would be regularly monitored.

After releasing the logo and a vision document of the mission, Yadav hoped that the mission would achieve its targets and make the state malnutrition free.

Present at the event were senior journalist Neerja Chowdhary, British economist Prof Lawrence Huddad, UNICEF’s India head, director general of Maharashtra Nutrition Mission Vandana Krishna and famous ghazal singer Peenaz Masani.

Five killed in Baghdad suicide attack

At least five people were killed and more than 14 others wounded Saturday in a suicide truck bombing attack targeting Iraqi police in southern Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, an interior ministry source said.

The attack occurred late in the afternoon when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden truck into a crowded police checkpoint at the southern entrance of Baghdad in Doura district, the source told Xinhua.

The death toll could rise as ambulances and police vehicles continued to evacuate the casualties to hospitals, the source said.

42 Boko Haram militants killed in Nigeria attack

At least 42 Boko Haram insurgents have been killed in a clash with military forces in a failed attack in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state, a security source said Saturday.

The insurgents on motorcycles and one Hilux vehicle attacked Sabon Gari, near Biu, 189 km from state capital Maiduguri, Friday morning but were repelled by miliary troops who have been on ground before the insurgents arrived, the source told Xinhua.

Modi says politics not dirty, launches BJP membership drive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday asserted politics was not dirty and asked his BJP to emerge as a “diverse” party to become “representative of all” and able to “fulfil the dreams of all” as he launched the party’s membership drive here.

“It is said politics is dirty. No, it is not. If politics was dirty, Mahatma Gandhi would never have ventured into this,” Modi said at a function to launch the BJP’s first membership drive post its emphatic win in the 2014 general elections.

Egypt jails eight men over gay wedding

An Egyptian court Saturday sentenced eight men to three years in prison for appearing in a video of an alleged gay wedding and posting it online.

“The video clip promotes debauchery and ruins traditional moral standards,” Xinhua quoted the court as saying in its ruling, describing the video posted in August on YouTube and social media websites as “an invitation to immorality”.

The clip shows two men on a boat in the river Nile in Cairo hugging and kissing after exchanging rings amid celebratory friends. It also shows a cake with a picture of the two men.

MEA denies reports over single mother passport rules

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday denied media reports that an unwed mother would have to declare how she conceived while applying for her child”s passport. MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said any single parent had to furnish only two documents – the birth certificate of the child and an affidavit before a magistrate. “In all cases, whether it is a mother who is a single parent, or a father who is a single parent, the Ministry of External Affairs only asks for two documents.

US Marine reservist freed from Mexico jail

US Marine reservist Sgt. Andrew Paul Tahmooressi, jailed for seven months in Mexico for entering the country with military-grade weapons, has been released after a court dismissed the charges, a judicial panel said.

The court in the northwestern border city of Tijuana found no cause to prosecute Tahmooressi on charges of possessing firearms and cartridges intended for the exclusive use of the Mexican military and carrying firearms without a licence.

The small islands of the Caribbean will be the first territories in the region to suffer the effects of rising sea levels due to climate change, threatening their tourism industries and, eventually, their very existence.

Russia invites India to jointly develop hydrocarbon projects

Indian companies will be able to participate in development and production of hydrocarbons in the Arctic and in East Siberia, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Energy Yuri Senutin told TASS news agency Saturday.

The high-ranking official participated in a meeting of a Russia-India working group on energy and energy effectiveness.

“For the first time ever we have suggested to the Indian companies participating in projects in development and production of hydrocarbons in Russia, including in the Arctic and in East Siberia, in their processing and supplies,” the deputy minister said.

A Singapore company’s project to send the first Singaporean to near-space touched a major milestone Saturday, with the unveiling of the space capsule.

IN.Genius hopes to launch a pilot in a helium stratospheric balloon craft into near-space, more than 20 km above sea level, according to media reports.

Coming soon after a Virgin Galactic rocket ship’s crash in the US Friday, IN.Genius stressed the “over-designed” safety aspects of its own vessel, and the lower risk of the project.

Seven police officers killed in Kenya attack

At least seven police officers have been killed and several others missing in fresh attacks in Turkana county, northwest Kenya, authorities said Saturday.

A local police commander said the attack, which took place Friday night in Kapedo, has left seven police officers dead and some 20 police reservists missing.

“The renewed attacks took place Friday night. A police helicopter has been dispatched to the area to help crack down on the raiders,” the police commander who told Xinhua.

Aishwarya has plans for daughter’s birthday in November

Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who celebrated her 41st birthday with the media Saturday said she is planning a special birthday for her daughter Aaradhya Nov 16.

“Yes, I am planning for her birthday as it not far away,” she said.

Aaradhya will turn three on Nov 16.

“When she turned one year old, I thought of celebrating her birthday with close family members… Last year, we had a big celebration and I had called kids. It was like her first wedding. This year I am planning to keep it a mix of both,” she said.

KIFF to screen 3D French film, Hollywood classics

The inclusion of 2014 French drama and experimental 3D film “Goodbye to Language” by renowned French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard in the 20th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is set to create new benchmarks, organisers said Saturday.

Beginning Nov 10, the fest will have 137 films from 60 countries and 31 Indian films, including 13 Bengali films in action.

Eminent filmmaker Goutam Ghose, part of the film fest committee, said he is looking forward to watching “Goodbye to Language” at the fest.

Bandh in Assam’s Karbi Anglong cripples normal life in parts of northeast

Frequent bandhs in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam have been causing major economic loss to the region. Recently, a 1,000 hour-long bandh to demand the creation of a separate autonomous state within Assam has been called, but the security forces are taking measures to ensure proper vehicular movement on highways passing through the district. The Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) had called for a 1,000 hour long bandh in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district from October 27.
